How many times has someone said something to you, as a single, that was very cliche/trite and it just annoyed you? This is a thread to share the top "cliches" that people tell singles which, maybe, they should reconsider saying...

OK, one of mine is: "Just learn to be perfectly content and THEN God will send you someone."

Yes, the Bible does say that we should be content in all our circumstances. But it doesn't say, "Until you are happy as a single, God will never grant your prayer." In fact, I've known lots of strong Christians who were praying for mates and felt weak in their singlehood when God brought them someone. I've known others who were content when God brought them someone too. There's just no set-in-stone "rule" for when God will choose to have it happen.

That's one of my top ones! Anyone feel like sharing others?

Oh it's ok....you won't be a third wheel...I promise!

The most irritating thing is people automaticaly assume there is something wrong with us because we can't find or keep a signifant other. We are broken.

Well...I can't think of any I've personally heard lately, since most of my current friends are also single (and some who aren't wish they were again ), but I recall from church days/single groups, the 1. assumption that I want a man/am always looking for a man, or 2. there's something "wrong" with me because I don't have one yet.

I went to a Singles Group one time, and it was about marriage!

And yeah, the whole "'He's' out there for you/let go, let God!" rhetoric gets on my nerves, too.

i get irritated when people give out unsolicited advices like,

"just pray harder"
"its a test of patience -- BLAH!!"
"dont be choosy...youre not gettin any younger"

when deep down am not even ready to jump into another relationship...duhh...it really gets to me when people assume they know what is in your heart and mind when actually, what they were thinking was a complete opposite of what you feel and think.....

Not exactly a spoken cliche but I could add to that the attitude that you don't know anything about life, have any wisdom to offer, or are really a true adult until you are married with a family.

Oh yeah, don't you just hate it when they assume they know what is in your heart, or what type of person you are, simply based on your situation?

One guy recently decided that because I am wanting to date someone, that must mean I'm not content and waiting on God. He made some pretty huge assumptions about me based on pretty much nothing. Geez!

Comeback for that one?

Just wait to see that person at a funeral... if it's open-casket, just point out.... "there's a good dress/tux for you..."

Ok, here is what I hear a lot of, and it sucks:

"After what you have been through, why would you ever want to be married again?"

My response:

"You are acluistic. That is, the absence of any clue."

Here's one's that I hear all the time:

"You'll just have to wait..."
(OK, how long?)

"There's someone out there for everyone."
(Now that I don't believe for the sheer fact that there aren't an equal number of men and women on the earth. )

"There's a lot of good things about being single."
(I know there are, but it's usually a married person that says this to me, and I think it makes them look like a hypocrite if they say this.)

"Jesus is the only companion you need."
(I know this is true, but it sounds like a copout response. I can't exactly invite Jesus to a movie or dinner with me.)

the conversation that runs something like this:

hi, how are you?
my name is XXX,
what do you do?
do you have kids?
are you married?
becoming slightly almost exasperated,
well, are you seeing someone?????
Well, what is a pretty young thing like you doing still single!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(my thought is that well, you are not so hot looking yourself and you are married, since when have looks become a prerequisite for becoming in some way attached to another human being?)

Oh yeah, I totally hate that one too! I think that sometimes when married people say this and TRULY mean it, it's because they are having troubles in their marriage and "miss" the single life. Very sad.

Another one that I hate is: You've just got to learn to wait on God. I have noticed that the people who usually lecture me on "waiting on God" are the people who have never had to wait on God for anything. They don't know what it means or how hard it can be sometimes!

Or, they have no idea how long you've waited. I personally love it when people who were married at eighteen or in their early twenties tell me that. (I'm 31.) Like they have any idea how long I've waited!

DISCLAIMER: I have lots of married friends who I adore! I still love them anyway...

Oh yeah, that is so true!! I know exactly what you mean. I had a friend tell me how she gave her desire for marriage over to God completely and He sent her husband to her 6 months later! She lectured me on waiting and I thought, "hmmm... I gave my desire over, oh, 10 years ago..." LOL! But I love her, and all my married friends. Sometimes I tell myself to just be happy that they care enough to OFFER advice, even if it's not the best. It's the thought that counts, right?

Then there's "Maybe god is still working on you"

(Working on what? Making me bitter and hopeless? I hope he doesn't have much further to go!)

Or,

"God will bring you together when both of you are ready"

(I was ready 6 years ago. What's taking my wife so dang long?)

Hehehe. That's a good one!

Isn't He working on all of us...until we're in heaven??

Zoey dons devil's advocate hat: And, in their defense, you may have been "ready" six years ago, but haven't you learned more life lessons in the ensuing time?
