Oh boy, I am sore from doing the lunges yesterday. I did them until I felt muscle failure, then I'd rest a few minutes and do it again. You lunge and extend your arms behind you (with 6 lb free weights) while extending one leg and lifting up at the same time. You hold it and then you do the same with the opposite when you lunge next. So you can walk and lunge and extend your arms and you get a pretty good entire body workout. You work your quads, hamstrings, and glutes (and lower back) when you lunge and extend the leg, and you work your arms with the free weights. My booty hurts, especially sitting down for long period of time!LOL Plus, my triceps hurts a lot too. But it's all a good sore, but I don't know if I can get the motivation to run. It's too dark out now (and sooooo windy and cold!), but just the thought of the treadmill and moving my sore tush and actually running is making me wince thinking about it.

I did some lunges yesterday for the first time in a loooong time too!! I'm a little sore, but I didn't do as many as I should have. I think I'm going to reduce my milage a little and start working with weights again. Even though I run a lot I am feeling flabby from not doing weights. I'm taking today off to try to let my back feel better; something is messed up in my neck. So, tomorrow will be one mile less, but added weight work-out! Calea

ORIGINAL: LaurainAL Have any of you ever tried Cardio Coach? You load it on to an mp3 player. It's an audio guided workout. It really takes the monotany out of exercise. I think it would be great for running but I use it on the elliptical. I've never been a runner, but this thread is inspiring me. I missed this the first time around. I think that might be one of the podcasts mentioned in the January Runner's World. It appears there are a few things you can download to listen to during workouts. I don't have an mp3 player that I want to run with, so I haven't been listening to anything while I run...just the wind...

You get there a few minutes early and they will make sure the seats are adjusted right. Then they just have a pattern of intervals. You go at your own pace. Some of the spin bikes have a computer display that shows your speed and the RPM you are pedaling at and your distance. The seats are kinda uncomfortable but its a very good workout. Burns a lot of calories. Bring water and a towel cause you can sweat a lot.

Jumping in here... I've been a runner for about 3.5yrs. I prefer longer races. This past weekend I ran Tucson Marathon. It didn't go well, since I had just come down with a cold. But, it was a very good race for me. I haven't run since. I worked out on the bike Tuesday and this morning. Tomorrow, I'll do a swim and then a short run.

Yep. I did my first, a sprint, in September. Got 2nd in my AG. I'm hooked! I'm working with a coach and we're planning out next season. Hoping for a half ironman next season.

(I'm assuming you're a woman from your pic?LOL) I can't make myself run more than 5 miles, that's my limit, so when I hear about people running marathons and the like, you have all my admiration!

I come from a background of long distance bicycling. I started riding when I was 16yo. I belonged to a great bicycle club and they taught me well. When I moved off to college, it was not uncommon for me to head out for a ride and end up at my parents--96miles away. The next day, I'd ride back to school. Luckily, my older sister used to do the same, so my parents were used to it... My first race was a half marathon. It just feels "right" to be out there for a good long time. Plus, with shorter races, there's not much time to do anything. My second season I ran a 10K. 1st and 2nd sprinted on ahead, and I knew I couldn't catch them. I got passed and moved into 4th, but didn't worry about it, figuring I had plenty of time. Nope. I finished in disappointing 4th... My son and I raced a 4miler and a 5K this season. He beat me in both, simply by out sprinting me at the finish. I did get 2nd in my age group in both, so I'm not slow! With longer races, it's all about holding your pace over distance, rather than sprinting at the finish. Yes, that is me in the photo. It was taken at Columbus Half Marathon in August. Ezri, from the home schooling folder, fixed it up for me.

ORIGINAL: phosadaud Marathons? Wow! Good for you! I agree, anyone that can run a marathon deserves praise and lots of it! It's all mental at that point. Unfortunately, I don't have the mental willpower to do a half marathon, let a lone a full one!LOL. Though it would be cool to attempt, it's daunting and intimidating to me. Akin to the feeling you get before a big exam or interview. And I hate that feeling so I have never run in anything competitive like a race. Well, if you count PT when I was doing ROTC and I hated that, running with everyone. Although one good thing about races and running with people I think it helps motivate you to run better.

phosadaud--you'll do fine!!! Last January the kids (boys ages 15, 13, 11, and 9) trained to do a New Years 2K. My oldest missed the cut off and ran a 5K. He did fine! As far as your race, start towards the back so you aren't holding up faster runners. Plus, it's pretty humbling being passed by everyone. I did my first post-race run this morning. Opted to use the track above the pool. UG!!! It was like a sauna! Plus, the track is 1/20 of a mile. I darn near needed to unwind after taht! But, it did keep me from going too long. Once I hit 20mins, I was DONE!!! Hoping to run outside on Sunday. My next race is a 15miler at the end of January.

I might do a 5k when it gets warmer. I ran 30 minutes today and walked 15. I am trying to get the battery replaced in my hrm monitor so I can start using it again. Ironically its the one designed for running and I have only used the basic mode. So I have the manual out and will start tinkering around with it.
