You might call this a poll of sorts.
We were thinking of starting a church website. We're not a big church, 150-200 Sunday goers.
Before designing a site, I think we need to have a goal.

I was wondering what is the purpose or goal of your church's website?
Communication with your members?
Church "promotion"?
Outreach & witnessing?
I suppose the list could go on.

You might want to check with the ministers in the Faith forum. I'm sure they could give you a better idea.

Ours started out as mainly a tool to communicate with members. We have a calendar of events, and you can listen to sermons online. When groups go on trips (camp, missions, etc.), someone on the trip usually posts daily with pictures and a blog.

Now, because of our location, we're getting ready to move to a more evangelistic set up. Our property is on a very popular lake (it's crowded at all hours), so we're getting ready to offer free wifi. The login page will bring up information about Christianity in general as well as info about our church.

You're already way ahead of the crowd by realizing that! [:D] (Trust me, I'm a website designer.)

The principle is similar for church websites as it is for business websites: how does the website support the goals of the organization? A website is not a separate ministry or a new program, it's just a tool that makes an organization more effective at what they are already doing. And that's how you justify how much time, effort, and money to put into it.

To paraphrase Paul in Romans 12, if your church's gift is serving, do that; if it is teaching, do that; because we are all members of one body. Your church website can't be all things to all people. Do what you do well, and trust Christ to use other members of the larger body to fill in the gaps in other areas.

If nothing else, the web site should be a source for basic information about your church. Name, location/directions, service schedule, staff, contact info, basic beliefs, etc.
