I always used the liquid cans. They were so much easier.

I would fill half the bottle with boiling water and put the formula in, then I'd shake it like crazy. After a few minutes the lumps were gone and then I'd fill the bottle the rest of the way with cold water.

The Ready to Feed or Concentrated stuff? My Mom always used the concentrate in the cans, I always just figured the powder was cheaper but thing about it now they concentrate and powder are probably about the same price.
I'm not sure I'm going to breastfeed next time if I still feel the same stress that I do now about. The thought of nursing seriously makes me just want to go crawl in a hole. I think we'll use the RTF pre-packaged bottles in the beginning and then transition to powder if I don't nurse.

Yeah, I know the generic might not be much of a difference. If I remember correctly the 13oz can of concentrate is $1.88 or so, and the bigger size(26oz?) can of powder is $12ish. The mixing ratio is 1:1 so a can of concentrate is 26oz properly mixed. The can of powder makes 192oz. The price difference in about $2 when all is said and done for 192oz of formula.

The cans are about $4.50 and he would take one a day. I'm not sure how that compares to the powder.

12 years ago when DD had formula the cans of powder were about $8 for prosobee or $6 for the carnation soy formula. She would go through about 2.5 cans a week. I think we got 9 cans a month on WIC and that was usually enough.

I tried with my second child but my heart wasn't in it (because of the previous problems, and also because I never really liked it anyway). My dd had half and half from day 2 onwards, and was fully bottle-fed by 6 weeks.

Around here, half and half is butter/marg combo. The other stuff is called "light cream"
I think next time around I will be more likely to start using formula earlier for "mom breaks" and probably more often than this time around. I too found bf very stressful.
I just saw some glass bottles on clearance yesterday, only $3 each, so I might stock up for the next kiddo.

different babies nurse differently, so you may find that you are fine next time and get enough breaks already.

Yolanda, I think it's totally fine to be planning ahead to bottle-feed earlier/more with your next baby.
My children are 18 and 14 now, and yet I still remember that feeling of total and utter relief when switching over to bottle-feeding, that feeling of it no longer being all down to me, it was wonderful.

I was just saying that in my experience of nursing four so far it is different every time....they nurse different....the home life can be different...etc. All sorts of things make it a new and different experience every time.

I tried to bf again with my second even though my milk never came in with the first. Well, my milk never came in with the second.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. If I ever were to get pregnant again, I would bottle feed immediately.

My experience with my dd (2nd child) was totally different - relatively "easy"/ straightforward delivery, immediate bonding between her and me, very content baby, slept more than her brother, fed more easily than her brother - and yet I still didn't like breastfeeding.
Thankfully I didn't succumb to any guilt-trips second time around either. 
the second time for me, I had an easier time....the first time baby ate every two hours for about 45 minutes each time....the whole 9 months I nursed. It just about killed me mentally!!! The second time baby slept for 3-4 hours at a time, and would nurse for only 30 minutes max....she was a very laid back baby....plus I was on some pretty heavy meds that left me pretty out of it a lot of the time. So I didn't mind sitting there holding and feeding her as much as I did the first time.

Nursing made me nauseous, as did pumping. I don't know if it was anxiety or what although the LC did say it is a somewhat normal response *in the beginning* to the hormones that are released.
The thought of nursing again really is very, very close to anxiety inducing. Can you get PTSD from nursing?

Ryanne, nursing made me nauseous too. Neasea, stomach cramps and severe diarreah (TMI, sorry) the entire time. It never went away. I'm hoping to talk to my doc about it this time since it was one of the factors in my giving up nursing with #1 and #2. I tolerated the stomach issues for 6 months each time (though I also gave formula for convenience with #1 and to suppliment a low supply with #2) before switching to formula entirely.

No, the Reglan just made me feel like I was either depressed or going nuts. It worked wonderfully for my milk supply though

Oh, what a bummer. I felt scared nurse Jimmy after what happened with Timmy, all the constant pumping and fighting my supply. In the hospital after I had Jimmy, I was having a hard time nursing him, and no one was in the hospital with me. Robert had to go home to sleep before work, and my mom was watching Timmy. The nurse offered to give him formula and take him for a few hours so I could sleep (apparently the nurses love to take the babies for a while when the maternity ward is empty), and it was so nice. And, after that I just decided, I'd nurse him when I could, but if I couldn't I wouldn't stress about the formula. It all ended up working out for both of us though, better than I expected.
Reglan made me feel a little weird too. I wasn't sure if it was just me, but apparently not. I hated the Fenugreek and Mother's milk tea worse though. I had to take three fenugreeks 3 times a day and drink that nasty expensive mother's milk tea, and I said I'd never do that again because it didn't even work.
Honestly, I think it's more important to have a sane mommy, so if you think nursing is going to go the same, then formula would be a good choice. You could even just try in the hospital, at least then you'll have a bunch of nurses and medication around to help you if nursing does the same thing to you.
