Okay ... have to post a mini rant ...
I signed up for both the Nestle Baby and Similac Welcome Addition "clubs" where they send you a diaper bag, a formula sample, and coupons, etc.
Got the Nestle one a couple of days ago, and the Similac one today. Now, some of you may recall that all of my kids have had issues with milk protein as well as the soy protein. No big deal ... except that Similac sends out "cheques" instead of coupons to use towards their products. They apparently have a hypoallergenic formula (Alimentum) which I would be very willing to try if BF doesn't go well yet again. But the "cheque" coupon thingy they sent covers every Similac product EXCEPT Alimentum!!! It even covers Pedialyte!!! And it's a decent thing too ... $10 off the price of a can of powder or case of concentrate. It just bugs me that every other type Similac makes is covered by this "cheque" coupon thing ... every kind except the one I would most likely need. Aargh!!!
I have decided, however, to write to Similac and ask if they have any coupons, etc. good towards a can of the Alimentum ... with the price of the hypoallergenic stuff, even a couple of dollars in savings would be great ... it is at least double the price of 'regular' formula.

It sorta makes me feel trapped, like the other day I went to go clean our old apartment, and I wasn't gone but an hour when Robert called me and said Jimmy was inconsolable, so I had to come home just to calm him down with a boob. I remember feeling like I had freedom with Timmy because he had formula too, and me and Robert could go to a movie or something. I dunno, maybe this all sounds selfish....but, I'm one of those people who needs dates with my spouse, ya know?

It's not selfish, Christina. You make perfect sense that you might want to be away from your toddler more then an hour or go on a date with your husband.
I hope weaning does work out for you. I was so happy when Nathan weaned, as much as I love him.

Thought I would jump in here and actually post. I have been lurking some in here but just haven't written anything.
A little about my situation...
I'm kind of in the in-between category. Breast was best in the early months for Josie (she's now 7 1/2 months old) but became not-best after she had her cleft lip repair. I supplimented early on and used a special feeder along with breastfeeding before her surgery. After surgery she simply would not nurse. We even went to a physician who specializes in breastfeeding. I finally came to the conclusion that nursing wasn't going to happen for her anymore. I now pump what I can (only about 10 or 11 ounces a day) and give her mostly formula with at least one bottle of breastmilk a day. For us, formula has really saved her life!
And speaking of formula coupons/checks...Imfamil was sending me a $5 check every month but stopped when she was around 5 or 6 months old. I still get their emails every now and then but no coupons or checks. I just thought that was strange since babies need formula (or breastmilk) until they're a year old.

That's exactly what happened to me too. I got a bunch until Levi was about 6 months then they stopped.
Do you use that brand? I still have 2 coupons left, and don't use that brand so if you want I'll send them to you.

I fully understand the desire to breastfeed. However, if it isn't working for you don't take that as a reflection on you, your baby or the relationship between the two of you. Breastfeeding is great, but it's not "the be all end all" of parenting.

We are still getting Enfamil checks, but they did switch to from infant formula to the "next step" type.

Yeah, it will be really nice. I know my mom is really looking forward to taking Jimmy overnight at her house. She is one of the few I trust wholeheartedly with my kids and don't even think or worry about Timmy when he spending the night with my mom. It's a nice feeling.

Kara, I haven't seen Alumentum in a large can over here either, even at Wal*Mart. Maybe you can order direct from the Enfamil website?

You can get Alimentum or Nutramigen in large containers... It comes in powder too, I had a TON of samples of it from when we were doing Gabby's allergy testing.

I've seen the Nutramigen in the small powder containers here, but not the Alimentum. As I said, I think a trip to the US is warranted ... will probably end up going over tomorrow afternoon after my midwifery appointment, since we're going to look at the price of a trampoline for the kids (and things like that are half the price there!)

I signed up online for the Enfamil and Good Start programs where they are supposed to send stuff but I haven't gotten anything yet. It has been more than 6 weeks since I signed up.
If David doesn't have any problems (allergies, gas, reflux, etc.) is it okay to use different formulas? I bought a can of Good Start and a can of Enfamil and I have been using both. He doesn't seem to prefer one over the other. The Good Start is hard to mix and clumps and the Enfamil gets really foamy when I mix it, so I'm not sure which I want to use.

The rule is that you can switch brands, but not types. We switched between Enfamil Lipil and the Parent's Choice equivalent without any problems but I would switch from say Similac Advanced and Enfamil Lacto-free.
We are at the end of our Enfamil Lipil, so I think we're going to try the PC Next Step formula.
Do you guys qualify for WIC?

Since you caught my lentil/legume thing, I'll see if my brain is working now ... I'm assuming you meant you wouldn't switch between Similac Advanced and Enfamil Lacto-Free, since one is milk based and the other is soy ...
I really wish that I could give this Similac "cheque" to say, our local woman's shelter, since I can't use it. BUT Similac has made it so that only the recipient is allowed to use it. I think I'll use it to buy a can of the Similac and donate it to them. I hate seeing things like this go to waste, and I know some of the women there come with really small babes and can use the formula. That's what I've done with my sample cans in the past, when I've known the kids can't use them (of course, I only take in the sealed cans)

Lol! You are right, I did mean to say "wouldn't". But, Similac Advanced and Enfamil Lacto-Free are both milk based formulas. The lacto-free is just like the equivalent of "lactaid" milk.
Your "cheque's" have you name printed on them? Ours are like that too but I've still sold them and given them away. Most places here don't double check the names, especially if you are paying with cash. I've used them many, many times and have never had them checked.

No, we don't qualify for WIC. We are barely over the limit.
So, I can switch between 2 regular milk based formulas?
I was given a check for Good Start that had a friends name on it. I paid with my debit card and used the check and no one said anything.

I know I sound like a broken record, but is there a reason you haven't tried the "generic" formula brands? They are almost the same as Similac, and as you end up needing more and more formula it will be a big budget saver. And yes, you can switch between 2 regular milk formulas.

Right now he only gets 6-9 ounces of formula a day. When he starts eating more I will look into the generic. Which generic do you use? I have heard the Target brand is good.

All the generics are made by the same company, so no matter where you buy it's going to be the same. Walmart, Target, Kroger, etc...

I don't think it is, Gabby is still on the 0-12 month type and she's 11 months. If we were going to switch to milk then I wouldn't bother with the stage 2 formula, but since we aren't doing milk for another year(if at all) we're going to do the toddler formula. We'll probably do it for another 6 months or so then switch to Rice milk.
All of my siblings, and myself were formula fed and only those of us who were allergic to milk(or soy...or both) did stage 2 formulas. I had one sister who used the soy stage 2, and then I had goat's milk with added vitamins.
And yea, the PC is a HUGE savings. It's at least 50% off the cost of a brand name.

Ryanne, I use PC diapers (only when away from the house...I use cloth at home) but not formula. I guess when it comes to formula, I want to be certain I'm giving her the best. Is PC "really" the same as Enfamil?
We are also just over the level to receive WIC.

When I got the welcome pack, I wasn't planning on using formula (before Josie was born) so I dismissed it. *sigh*
I know it's supposed to be just like Similac, but Levi has actually done better on it than he did with the Similac samples I used.
