Continuing from the old thread......
Yes, Sideways, DH is ok with extended nursing now. He thought Reagan would be one of those Discovery Channel kids who was still nursing 12 times a day until her 4th birthday. Now that he knows its only in the morning for a few minutes, he doesn't mind at all.
Funny how when things are created by God they just work themselves out, huh?
As to the new thread.........
To the new mommies and pregnant ladies, here's my two pennies:
Commit to read one article per day from either La Leche League or kellymom and you will be informed and empowered! And always feel free to come here and ask questions - surely one of us will have been there before and have advice.

Congrats Brandy!!!!!!
Do you plan on staying home with the baby or eventually going back to work and pumping or formula feeding?
Do you plan on nursing (I am assuming yes since you are in here)?
If so how long is your goal?
OK...my advice.....
For nursing advice the #1 is of course Le Leche League (linked above by Prudent).
Their book "The Womanly Art Of Breastfeeding" is the guide book to bfing

will have to work to some extent but not sure how much right now. I have high hopes i may be able to sneak the little one in with me but not sure. and YES to nursing, i will nurse until kiddo says no.

Cool!!!! It's good to hear people that are committed from the beginning to let the baby set the tone!!!!
OK...for the working (even slightly) mom, you want to talk to Kat (who I am sure will post soon)...she has successfully continued to nurse and pump for now two (I believe) babies because she has to work. They got into some debt that they are trying to get out of, so not working is not an option for them. Kudos to her for having the commitment to do that AND still nurse/pump!!!! She has lots of tips I am sure about pumping. I personally find it too hard and haven't done it with the last few kids because it's not worth the effort for me.

Congratulations! My son is 4 months old and I am pumping exclusively for him due to a number of problems with latch on at the beginning. Bug and I are definitely the exception to the rule so I am sure you and your baby will figure that out just fine. But, I do want to say that if you want/think you will need to pump when you go back to work you should start looking into the type of pump you want to buy well before the baby is due. There are a lot of options available in a number of price ranges so take the time to look at them in advance. I bought a pump the day I came home from the hospital and wish I had thought to rent a pump for a few weeks and investigated my options more thoroughly. Also, although I am so glad to be able to provide EBM for my son I wish I was able to nurse him directly so I think it is terrific that you want to "sneak" your little guy or gal into to work for nursing. Hope you are doing well.

Chase is having some serious gulping issues when he is nursing. I don't know how to correct it, any ideas? He gulps and it makes this whistling sounds, I know he is getting a lot of air, and not sure what else I can do.
We had a rough night last night, I'm almost ready to give up again...trying to make it to 6 weeks at least. I think part of the discouragement is living so far out of town, it's hard to go anywhere or do anything because he just can't last. Anyway, we're still working on it.

Hang in there Yolanda- what do you mean by he can't make it- do you mean you would have to nurse while you are out? If you need to- just do it! Practice some modesty at home (using a blanket, your wrap, whatever)- ask your husband if you are covered or what angles you need to work on, and once you gain a little confidence, go for it. The great thing about nursing is that you always have ready-mixed food at the right temperature- all you need is the baby, and maybe a place to sit. Also, is he gulping all the time, or just at night?

Yolanda, you can nurse in public!!! I was a bit nervous about it at first but *had* to do it this past week when we were traveling. I used my sling and practiced a little at home since using the nipple shield made it a bit tricky at first but we figured it out. I'll take a picture of me nursing in the sling, if you want I'll make you one- I think the "X" design of the Baby K'tan makes it a bit easier then a regular ring sling.

Yep, I work full-time and am pumping for my third baby. If you plan on pumping and nursing, I recommend already having a pump before the baby arrives. Take it out of the box, read all the instructions, practice setting it up and hooking yourself up... but don't turn it on! Be as familiar with it as you can beforehand. This also helps with post-baby stress. I'm large-breasted and flat-nippled... a horrible combination when trying to nurse a newborn. I've ended up pumping the first couple of weeks with all three of my angels because they just couldn't latch on properly. Already knowing how to use a pump and having it all on hand with my last two really relieved a TON of stress for me.
I also recommend using wide mouthed bottles. They force the baby to open up wider when taking the bottle, thus keeping their latch correct for nursing. We used the Avent bottles and loved them! Have Dad give the bottles... not you! It's very confusing for them to have "the source" available but being told they need to take a bottle.
Pump recommendations... If your going to be working full-time, invest in a double electric pump! My pump sessions last about 20 minutes and it would be almost an hour if I didn't have the double pump. I've used a rented Medela Lactina, a borrowed Medela Pump in Style and my own Lansinoh Double Electric Pump. I recommend ALL of these, depending on your budget. If you will be pumping full-time, no nursing, you'll definitely want to go for the Medela Lactina, ideally, but the Pump in Style at least.
If your only going to be working part-time, I'd recommend either the Double Electric Pump or Avent's Isis Manual pump. The Avent Isis is an EXCELLENT manual pump and if you use the Avent bottles, you can pump directly into them with the Isis.
If you know you will be going back to work, I'd recommend starting to pump a couple of weeks after birth or a couple of weeks before returning to work. You can freeze what you pump then and have back-up for emergencies.
Okay, I think that covers the beginning of my nursing/working mom advice! Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Dumb question, I'm not pregnant yet, but trying, and I know I will have to work when I do have a baby, but I still want to breastfeed. So you can pump during the day but can you still nurse when you are at home in evening and weekends? I dont want to totally miss out on the nursing experience. How many times a day do you have to pump? I work at a very flexible office so it wouldnt be a problem, I just curiously thinking ahead.
BTW...I lurk in here all the time, I love this thread!

I also wanted to add that the Avent Isis will attach to any of the Avent bottles or sippy cup products -- great for extended nursing. It is also recommended by lactation consultants.

I nurse when I'm home with my little Kenna and pump when I'm at work. Here's what my day looks like in the pumping/nursing realm:
6:00am- wake Kenna up and nurse her
7:00am- pump for 20 minutes (don't get a lot since she's recently nursed)
11:00am- pump for 20 minutes
1:00pm- nurse Kenna on my lunch break
3:00pm- pump for 20 minutes
5:00pm- home from work, nurse on demand until the next morning
I also nurse on demand on the weekends and during holidays.

It's definitely a delicate balance at the beginning. Some babies won't take a bottle and some babies will take the bottle, realize it's easier and then not want to nurse. It's takes some persistance and dedication, but it can be done!

((((Yolanda)))) I understand the frustration at this point.  Those first several weeks are hard and you do feel kind of isolated and like nursing is all you do. But usually after the first couple of months, baby will start going longer and longer between feedings and start doing more than just eating and sleeping. That part seems like it will last forever, but it's really over before you know it.
Erin, I pumped for Isaac a few days a week for the first 6 months because I was still working and I couldn't take him with me every day. Yes, you can pump during the day and nurse all evening/night/weekends, etc. I pumped about every 3 hours at work, which was only a couple times so it wasn't bad and then nursed him as soon as I got home. I do recommend the Avent Isis as well. Love it!

Isabel is 10 months old in a few days and is still nursing. She is SUCH a good eater of solid foods now that she's not nursing as often or as long. She is a little piggy baby! We call her Babyzilla because she absolutely terrorizes anyone with food, especially her brother. LOL!! She doesn't want baby food very much anymore, she'd rather have what we're having. LOL! Right now she nurses:
--Early morning, about 5:30 or 6 she'll wake up and come to our bed and nurse
--After lunch before nap
--Right before dinner
--Bedtime

very important point....nipple stimulation can cause labor to start and you don't want that too early
Erin...I think the key to how Kat has kept things going so well with nursing and pumping is that she is focused on nursing when she can...if she is home she nurses. She doesn't substitute because she is busy cleaning or because she doesn't feel like it...she nurses at home...period. She only rely's on the pumping for when she is not going to be with the baby. Also her work environment is very giving on how much she can do as far as breaks for nursing and feeding her while on her lunch break.
Jack is 15mo (next week) and he nurses about ten times a day still. He has started eating regular table food...not mashed up anymore...but he still prefers to have me on tap throughout the day pretty often...lol. He still takes 2-3 naps a day so some of those nursing sessions are really nap time and since he nurses to sleep, well....

I've worked with a few women who were able to nurse & work well beyond the 1 year mark.
Peculiar's last point is what they said made the difference. Baby never got a bottle except when they were at work. As tempting as it may be to skip a midnight feed and let hubby give the baby a bottle on the weekends, they never did it. As often as they could physically nurse their baby, they did. Physically nursing keeps the supply higher than pumping.

Thanks ladies. I've got plenty of time to work out details, I just needed reassurance that it COULD be done. I work in an awesome job with very kind flexible bosses. One of the daycares that I am weighing is one building over from my office (I can see it from right here!) and I am thinking about looking into (a little closer to decision making time of course) being able to walk down there and BF during lunch. I am also considering PT work for the first few months anyway. Like I said I have plenty of time but I am just trying to figure some of this stuff out early, and be prepared.

He gulps all the time... well not all the time, but at every feeding anyway...

10 times a day at 15 months?! I think I'd go crazy! My babies have always gone done to 4x a day by the time they were about 8 months or so. Kudos to you for having the commitment to nurse that often!

why do you think it seems I am on here so much...i get on here when I am nursing him. I don't mind it though...both the girls quit on their own about this age... 15-16 months...so it is good to know he isn't going to anytime soon`
