I have a masters in vocal music performance and am preparing to start work on my doctor of musical arts in vocal pedagogy. I've had vocal pedagogy and advanced vocal pegadody, taught voice privately and taught voice at a local state university. So maybe we use different meanings of "vocal fry". Our musical pedagogues prefer to use the term "strohbass" and mean exactly what I described (vibration of gristle instead of cords is producing sound). But maybe "strohbass" and "vocal fry" aren't synonymous? P.S. A better example of strohbass: http://people.mills.edu/toda/music/analysis_stroh.html P.P.S. An example of Evenk singing, they use strohbass: http://lofi.mp3express.ru/61185.mp3

I know its possible, but JD is the only man I know for sure who has recorded a double low C. JD is the only one to ever RECORD that note....but Mike Holcomb of the Inspirations can record that note and lower anytime he pleases. He is just not interested in that recognition. Mike is the lowest and best going today. Listen to their song "If you only Knew"....hes still got it. I believe he recorded the note on their live reunion project. Paul David Kenamer has also recorded the note, I believe.

So maybe we use different meanings of "vocal fry". That's the case, according to the article: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basso_profondo#Il_vocal_fry However, in this meaning, all bass singers discussed here use this technique at least below G1, because there's a physiological limit. So the question "who is the lowest" is senseless until we accept well-trained vocal fry (i.e. which sounds musical).

ORIGINAL: danielmount He sings the lowest C on the piano regularly (many nights) and can go lower on occasion. Young Man At the age of 75 I believe I know what is singing and what is not. I too listened to the link from Droog_Andrey and that is without a doubt not singing. No offense, but to my ears, It sounds more like someone clearing their throat. Herbert

I have to agree with Uncle Herb, Russell, & querty, that is growling and I really like Mike Holcomb. But as I stated in another post earlier, I like bass when it is sang, not growled.

Ok... Well, (so I have peace of mind) many of you have heard my demo, do you consider that growling?

I have stayed out of this debate. And to be honest I had to go back and listen to your demo again Matt. I personally do not consider it growling however I like the second verse better than the first verse. There was a couple of spots on the first verse I thought might be a little low for your best voice. Nothing negative intended. That being said you can sing bass with me anytime.

Matt, I'm speaking here strictly as a voice teacher. The first note you sing sounds like vocal fry, or, as some folks might call it, growling. I would rather hear you sing up in your chest voice, which sounds very nice. I'd like to hear you sing that about a major third higher and let 'er rip. JMO. Don't mean anything negative, it's not awful, I would just rather hear you really sing. Daryl
