I would question how many of the bass singers mentioned here can actually sing a double low C. I know its possible, but JD is the only man I know for sure who has recorded a double low C. Now guys I know I am biased, but I really do believe that our bass, Alan Brewster, is the best going today. He has a solo technique very much in the style of George Younce, and a low note well below where most bass singers can sing. Plus he can sing modern harmony as well as any bass alive or dead. On our new CD Alan sings a double low E on the second song on the CD, and he does the same note every night we sing the song. I am telling you, you gotta here this guy. He is an awesome bass.

If you're only measuring range in one direction (DOWN!), then I would agree!
Tim Riley, Harold Gilley, Jeff Chapman, Alan Brewster (as just mentioned), Christian Davis, and a few others can get within a few notes of Mike--down to the E or F above Mike's low C.
But Christian Davis blows me away, because he can also sing tenor. I have a solo CD where he sings all four parts (including the tenor part) on "The Lord's Prayer," and hits a high G or high A (I forget which)! So if you're measuring bass range in both directions, I'd say Christian would rival most any bass singer in the range he's able to sing and sing well. Remind me and I'll be happy to bring that up to play for you next time I see you.
(Come to think of it, I've also heard Gene McDonald hitting a low E or F on a recording and singing tenor, too.)

of the year) - He has a very melodious tone and can sing melody

Back in the Gospel Singing Jubilee Days the Inspirations would swap parts and Mike would sing Lead on "Jesus Cs Coming Soon" and Troy Burns the second original bass singer of the the group would sing the bass part. The last group I sang in I would sing tenor on one song so we could be a male trio for that one song because our group was a mixed group. i cant sing real high, but as long as I dont have to do octave highs the I can sing just about any song. F below low C where I can cosistanly hit a low note and not worry. Steve Warren during his time with ehe Mastrs V did a sola album singing all parts.

I'd vote for Paul David Kennamer from Valor.
Just listen to a powerful E1 he sings in "Old Ship of Zion" (moments around 00:06 and 00:35). He also surpasses J.D. Sumner singing B0 in "Jesus He Will Fix It" (around 01:20).
And there's even a G#0, faint but audible, in "It's Almost Over" at 01:12, but you definitely need an appropriate sound system to hear this.
Note also a slide starting somewhere from ~C#0 in "How Great Thou Art" (although he's rather speaking here but not really singing).

If you're talking vocal fry with little to no real tone quality, he's good down low. I rather enjoyed the clips where he was actually singing in his chest voice and not 'trying' to sound low. He's got a great voice, but down low I personally would much rather hear Tim Riley or Mike Holcomb. JMO

I think that when (not if) people get a chance to hear The Diplomat's wonderful bass vocalist, Joeseph Brown, they will quickly add him to their top five list. He reminds me SO much of London Parris, but may even be a little better... and THAT'S saying ALOT!

Yep, I remember those days also. Hamil was hard on the guys, but he made singers out of most of them. I remember he used to hit Arthur Rice in the back and say "sang harder boy,". That was too funny also, because Arthur was very shy, much like he is today, but he's one of the best Lead singers of this era!!

I really need to hear him because I think London Parris is one of the best ever. Man could that guy sing! ! !
Anybody familiar with a guy named Jody Medford? He had the opportunity to learn from London and decided to travel with a group instead and shortly thereafter London passed away. Jody said he kicked himself over and over. He ended up singing with Squire back when Ernie Haase was singing tenor, but he swore he should have taken time to study with London.

MIKE ALLEN sings a an Eflat on The Prophet's new CD. Solo voice is outstanding. Never heard a bass better...really.

Even Mike Holcomb (who has the lowest bass among these 5 you listed) sings E1 more croaky. It's just physically impossible for human to sing that low without croaking at all.
BTW, growling is a completely different technique, it's used by some death-metal and doom-metal vocalists, e.g.:

I can't speak for MsJudy, but he is clearly using a technique called vocal fry or fry register. He's not singing in full voice down there. His fry range has no real presence. Tim Riley, while maybe he can't fry as low, does is with umph. Maybe that's why he doesn't try to go as low as others. He probably figures, "If I can't do it well, I don't want to do it." That's just my opinion.
Also, has anyone considered Cecil Stringer. He was formerly with the Cumberland Quartet, one of the Blackwood groups and others. JD actually mentioned him and Mike Holcomb as the two he passed the baton to. You can check out Cecil at the Spoken 4 website.

When you are vocal frying, not your vocal cords are vibrating but the throat gristle. The difference between Paul Kennamer and, e.g., Tim Riley or some of russian profondi, is formant frequencies. None of them actually use focal fry, they just use different resonators.
Italian-school bass singers use their chest as the main resonator, and aim at rich timbre and big volume of live sound. That is what we hear in opera bass parts; however, it's physically impossible to sing notes lower than F1 with that technique.
Paul Kennamer and other bass singers who make recordings with a mic use their throat and mouth as a main resonator (quarter-wave), and aim at wide range, disregarding the volume of sound and the intensity of high formant in their tembre. There's theoretically no lower limit for the range, and such voices may sound nicely down to C1 and sometimes even lower, becoming non-musical only somewhere in subcontroctave. Paul Kennamer has very powerful cords, so there's enough volume in his E1 and even B0. Tim Storms, on the other hand, has too faint voice there, so I personaly wouldn't count his guinness record as singing.
Mike Holcomb, BTW, use both techniques, gradually changing from chest to quarter-wave resonance somewhere at C2-A1.

I was just curious. I have a masters in vocal music performance and am preparing to start work on my doctor of musical arts in vocal pedagogy. I've had vocal pedagogy and advanced vocal pegadody, taught voice privately and taught voice at a local state university. It's always interesting to me to see people who may not necessarily have "formal" training but take the initiative to learn things on their own. Kudos to you.

We are off topic but I have to agree about Aurthur. But I don't know of any lead singer of any era in SGM that could sing or could have sang with the intensity and range that he has been putting out with the demanding schedule of the KH for some 12 years.

My vote is for Cecil Springer with Spoken 4. Wow! what a voice. He can really sing too.
Example: "Hold Me" and "Beautiful Life" on their newest CD.

JD is the only one to ever RECORD that note....but Mike Holcomb of the Inspirations can record that note and lower anytime he pleases. He is just not interested in that recognition. Mike is the lowest and best going today. Listen to their song "If you only Knew"....hes still got it.
Im a tenor, so it takes a pretty special bass singer to get my approval. Mike Holcomb has it.
