Missions Accomplished!......Well sort of at least.

I went to Lowes this morning gave someone directions so I hope I get half credit for that. After that I talked to the cashier about traveling. OK so it wasn't a small specialty store. I'm taking half credit for that one too.

I went to another store also and was going to start a conversation with the cashier but the dude behind me dumped the pie he was going to buy on the conveyor belt and the top came off it (it was in a box) that embarassed him so much he dropped a package of cheese on the floor. So she was trying to help him out of that disaster while completing my purchase.

Eventually I'll accomplish one of these but by that time I'll be who knows how many behind.

No worries. Hey, it's the effort that's half the battle. Talking about Lowes, that gives me an idea for my next challenge. Have you thought about what your challenge will be yet?

I have to go out by myself to lunch - hmmm. where should I go?

No I want to actually complete one correctly first.

I have always been kind of shy so some of these could be a stretch for me. I'm much better about not being shy for that very reason. I pushed myself into doing things that forced me not to be shy. That is how I view these "missions" as something new to push me into doing things I normally wouldn't.

Same here!!! I've always been pretty shy, especially about going up and just making small talk, and ESPECIALLY with someone I find attractive. But a couple of years ago, I read a book that pointed to some of our reasons for not getting a date. It basically said that we have to talk to a LOT of people, and not just those we're interested in. That way, when the right people came around, we had exercised our "social muscle" enough and were open to talk to them. The challenge in the book was much tougher than the challenges here, though. But I'm not going to give it away. Eventually, my challenges will include "more". But *I'm* not ready for that yet, so we'll have to wait.

Not to worry, Craig - I've not done any of them yet! LOL

The only one I have done was to have a conversation with the lady who cut my hair last week.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

For lunch, I decided to go to a little lunch cafe downtown. There are a few, and this one had fewer people in it. I chatted with the cook for a while after ordering my sandwich. Soon, a gentleman came in and the three of us chatted about everything under the sun - the weather, hunting, traveling, you name it. I had started the ball rolling with "don't you love that we're getting cooler weather tomorrow???" They picked up the ball, and we had a great conversation.

Next Challenge (and this is going to be a step-up on the challenge scale):

Go to Home Depot, Lowes, or other hardware store or garden center. The purpose of this assignment is for you to approach someone with assistance or with a question. Guys (especially, but not necessarily), hang around in an area you feel comfortable with, and when you see someone who looks a little "lost" or like they have a question, offer your assistance. Even if it's just to call an associate. Gals (especially, but not necessarily), go look for something you need, but something you need a little help in finding or choosing. Ask someone for assistance. The guy/gal thing is offered just as a guide. Go do what you feel comfortable in doing.

Ok, this may not have been part of any challenge, but I just wanted to say that we had a visit from a service provider this morning. He was a pretty friendly guy, and we enjoyed a great conversation. He was told that our office was haunted (LOL Yeah, right!) and boy, we played on that -- poor guy! He was a great sport, though. Oh, the fun we would've missed out on if we'd been too timid or preoccupied to talk.

As a former service provider to offices I'm sure he appreciated having a friendly office to got to.

LOL Yeah, I'm sure he did!! Poor guy. He had been told, by the previous technician, that the place was haunted. And I think he half-way believed it. The people at his home-office played it up, too. Good thing we were there for him, though.

Oh, I'm sure you've seen your share of unfriendly offices.

I worked in a lot of offices with very nice people unfortunately those are not the ones that stick with you. As I worked my way up through the service department the customers got progressively worse to deal with as I got more and more of the machines that other guys couldn't fix so the customers were getting angry with the machine and/or the services provided by the time I would show up.

BTW we did the same thing within our department about offices being haunted among other things. We had nicknames for customers and a lot of the techs had nicknames and some models of machines too. So between all the acronyms we used and the nicknames it sounded like we talked in code.

Mission Accomplished!

Went into a restaurant and chatted with handsome older gentleman. While I thought he was very attractive, he was a bit older than I would prefer. We had a very good conversation. Afterward he gave me his phone number and asked me to call him.

Now, I did ask a man for directions to the pier (I really did need directions). I think he was married, because he was riding a bike with his wife . . . but he was also elderly.

Now, I think it's time to get creative with the challenges . . .

Your Mission Should You Choose to accept it, is to chat with someone of the opposite sex of a different racial background than your own. And to make this a little bit easier. I've set up a little diagram that will tell you exactly what race to chat up.

Find your birth month (eg. March, April, May), beside it will be the race that you are suppose to chat up. If you find that your b-day month asks you to chat up someone of the same racial background as yourself, you must choose the month above yours (eg. You're born in March, March = Hispanic, but you are Hispanic, then you'd go with February). The same applies if your local is particularly homogeneous and you can't find that particular race/ethnicity, go with the month above it--If you're born in January, go to December.

January = White/Caucasian
February = Hispanic
March = Black/African American
April =Asian/Pacific Islander
May =Middle Eastern/Persian
June = Black/African American
July =White/Caucasian
August =Asian/Pacific Islander
September = Hispanic
October = Middle Eastern/Persian
November =Black/African American
December =Asian/Pacific Islander

Mission #1 FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED. I went to Wal-Mart to return a litter box and had a nice little chat with the (male) clerk about cats. However, I missed the boat on the compliment thing by failing to say, "It was a pleasure dealing with you."

The latest one sounds interesting. However, the area where I live is surprisingly short on asian and middle eastern men ... at least when I'm not on day shift (thereby working in the college town.) Another challenge that might have to wait a week, when I can go to Kinko's and accomplish this.

Bummer that I wasn't born in February or September. I LIKE latino men! (Not that I see too many of them around here anyway.)

Okay, so I GUESS I got one of them accomplished on Saturday. I stopped into the local soccer store (I've known the owner for years) to see what referee stuff they had. I chatted with the guy there (quite young) for about 10 minutes as I asked a variety of questions and stuff. It was quite pleasurable. Fortunately, we were the only people in the store at the time, so it wasn't hard to do.

Mission Accomplished! One of them at least.

I talked for a little while to the teller at the bank (an older woman). Not a store I know but I don't get many places when they are busy.

Ii have a new neighbor in the first floor of the house behind mine. She introduced herself to me a couple of weeks ago as I was taking my trash out. She is a married lady with her husband in Irag, and they have two children. She is a very outgoing and friendly type of person.

Last night she came to my door and invited my to a cookout at her place with several other people. I had planned to go to the high school football game tonight so I thought I would stop by for a quick hello and go on to the game.

So I went over about 5:30. Besides the hostess, who was preparing food in the apartment, there was a family of three there. Later another couple came to join the group. I decided to stay and eat and not go to the game.

Mission accomplished: I went into a little store/eatery and looked around for something to buy. I wasn't really hungry, but there was a guy who had on an interestin tie. It had smiley faces all over them. So I complimented him on the tie and asked him where he'd gotten it. We had a good laugh about it, because it was one of the most unique ties I'd ever seen.

Utilityfielder, I think it's great that you actually decided to stay and hang out with your neighbors rather than go to an "entertainment" venue. Y'know, sometimes, I think we americans are "entertained" out of real social lives, and real relationships. Obviously, sitting in front of a t.v., movie screen, baseball field, hockey rink, etc. etc. to watch something cuts down on actual social interaction. Sometimes, I think church does that too, when we just go listen to one guy, instead of actually socializing with each other--fellowshipping! Okay, I'm getting off of my soap box. On to accomplish another mission!

Hey folks,

Haven't been following this thread too closely, but I think I sorta met the first challenge, though it wasn't at the store. At the reception for the wedding I was shooting video for, I introduced myself and chatted with an attractive young lady. And I didn't even spontaneously combust or otherwise die from it!

I think it represents a bit of a personal milestone as not too long ago wild horses with AK-47's couldn't have made me talk to a girl out of the blue like that. (Granted I had a good way to start the conversation because she was the wedding photographer and I was doing video, but I still took the initiative to cross the room and talk to her.) I just give the credit to God - I've always been shy/self-conscious/whatever, but as He continues to shape me maybe I'm finally getting over that hurdle (at least a little).

Okay...I think I kinda, sorta, almost, in a round about way may have accomplished a challenge today. I had to go to a business to pick up some equipment and was suppose to have a rep go through all the how to's and such about it that was suppose to only take a 1/2 hour. Well...right off the bat I notice what fabulous eyes he has and I thought, "hey....here's my opportunity to compliment someone" but then was trying to figure out how to get that in there without sounding weird. Well..through the conversation I learn he is single and I think "bonus!" but still not quite sure how to slip in my compliment about his eyes without sounding like it was a come on. Well..then a little later in the conversation I learn he's a Christian and I think "super bonus!!"...but still can't quite get my compliment in....but now even more than ever I think I would really like to get that in there. Well...then all of a sudden he surprises me and compliments me with the same compliment I was going to give him. It was really funny...I said "you beat me to it!" So...does that kinda sorta count even if I was thinking it but he beat me to it?

Oh...and our supposedly 1/2 hour conversation turned into 1 1/2 hours.

Well...he gave me his card...but of course that is for if I have any questions about the equipment. Hmmmm.....may be I could think of a bunch of questions to ask...like where's the on button....and then call the next day and ask where's the off button.

We should help you with more questions to ask .... hmmm ... how about, "Can you help me move this big heavy piece of equipment over there ... no wait, I like it in that corner better!?"

Oh, you should so take advantage of that. Yeah, come up with some questions, something you "forgot" to ask before. Maybe he could come to your office to help you set it up or something.
