ORIGINAL: miasma quote:
I think it's a petty use of the word. Sin is a grave issue, not one to be bandied about from one social moray to the next, depending on one's personal preference and opinion. Perhaps, but sin is not rare in our lives, and the word does not need to be reserved for only the most heinous actions. Many, many things qualify as sinful. All of us one here have probably sinned several times just typing our posts--because of impure thoughts and unkind words. Let's look at this a little differently. Instead of asking: "Is it a sin?", why not ask: "Does it glorify God?" Personally, I don't think it does. The Bible may not specifically forbid believers from having tattoos, but you have to look at the principles. The Bible doesn't specifically forbid abortion, gambling, or any number of other things most Christians would consider wrong, but the principles are clear. In regard to tattoos: They call attention to oneself. They permanently mark the temple of the Holy Spirit. They can hurt a believer's witness. Until recently, tattoos have, for the most part, had a negative connotation in our society, and still do for many people. Not having tattoos normally doesn't turn others off, but having them often does. Believers are supposed to be set apart from the world. If we do and say all the same things as unbelievers, we are not being the holy people God intends us to be. Why not be different from the world in this area? Those are just a few things that come to mind.
