It's personal preference. Like I said, I grew up in an era when most people with tattoos were pretty rough and/or unsavory characters. It is hard for me to accept tattoos as mainstream. I just don't personally see a good reason for them, and especially with so many people getting them. I think a lot of people are getting them now because it is the cool thing to do. But I wonder if they will feel the same way in 30 years when their tattoos don't look so good on sagging and wrinkled skin?

I agree to a certain extent. I think it is something that you should deffinately put some thought into. I had thought about getting one before and didn't do it because i always figured i would regret it later. This one that i got is very personal and is something that i will gladly carry with me forever. Had it been different circumstances i might not have done it.

I think that there are many people who would be turned off by someone with noticeable tattoos. By not having tattoos, you are removing one more thing that could cause some people to reject you, and hence your Christian witness.

Actually, the people that have posted here that have tattoos have shared positive stories of their experiences, and their tattoos have actually helped them witness to others....

I got a tattoo in memory of my fiance who was killed in iraq 18 months ago. It is a cross with the USMC shield on it. It's not very big and most people don't even notice it but when they do it has provided the opportunity for me to be a witness to them. I don't see a problem with it.

believeinhim2, what a wonderful way to honor your fiance.

Yes there will always be people who will get a tattoo for the "cool factor" and not put any thought behind why they get a tattoo, other than that it's another fashion statement (only permament). But you can usually tell the difference between someone who has thought long and hard before getting their tattoo and someone that just went and got one on a whim because it looked cool. I think I commented in an earlier post, but I can definitely tell the difference. You have the cookie cutter tatoos (rose, butterfly, that bicep bracelet, etc) and then you have the tattoos that are obviously personal in nature and a lot of thought went behind the design.

Yes, that's true. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't have been able to witness to those people if they didn't have a tattoo.

I agree with your last comment about some people put thought into it and others don't.

I do not think tattos are sinful, necessarily, though I have seen some that would qualify as such

I do not have any, and do not plan to get any, but I have no problem with them on others. Although when someone has those full-body tattoos, I think of snakes. Not sure why. That doesn't make it a sin, though--just creeps me out.

I know what you mean about being creeped out. I don't mind the subtle ones so much, but the ones that have a lot of coverage are hard to ignore.

There was a bit on a news channel the other day with heavily-tattoooed folk on it--that is what I was thinking of when I read this.

That had to have *hurt!* They didn't seem ot have a single pore on their skin that hadn't had a needle stuck in it.

I think I have only ever seen a person with the whole body done IRL once. It was weird to me, but I tried to overlook that.

My DSS/DSD's step-sister has a really large tattoo on her chest. Only a high-collared blouse (which is not something she would wear) would cover it. It was a huge joke in her family--to the point where I thought (hoped/prayed) it was a rub-on job, except that DSD said she had to go with her to hold her hand while she cried for the last part of it.

Who would purposely hurt themselves that way?

Not me!

How do you know? Maybe the person with the tattoo doing the witnessing would have only the ink in common with the person that they were talking to and perhaps it was originally the tattoo that drew the two people together.

This has been the case on several occasions for me. I am a proffesional buisnesswoman and really have not had anything in comon with the people that i have been able to witness to other than the ink work.

I'd like to thank everyone for their insight and opinions, as I've gotten many different opinions from fellow family Christians, friends etc. I feel the Holy spirit will convict me if it is wrong. but I value other Christians opinion on this topic!!! I have many tattoos including the face portraits of four of my children. I have been recently Blessed with a fifth. However I also have just recently been Saved and have left some bad habits of the world and have been praying, studying and determining if it would be wrong to continue with inking my body ( with the portrait of my last child) or is it not Gods will??????? Again thanks for all the insight!!!!

My only (so far) tattoo is my wedding ring. Hubby and I talked and prayed about our rings for well over a year before we had them done, and never felt anything but a resounding "Yes!" about it. We had them done for our 11th anniversary, almost two years ago, and I have never, ever, ever regretted it.

A final thought to leave you with:

On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. ~ Revelation 19:16

Now, take that as you will, but I doubt Jesus sat around scribbling on himself with a sharpie before he appeared to John.

What a great job of out of contexting you have presented for us

You both just implied Jesus broke the Torah on Earth, that is implying He sinned. That would be false now wouldn't it? If you pay attention there, Jesus is Glorified in Revelation, He is not here and did not have a tattoo here on Earth. He actually spoke up for the Faith instead of just putting markings all over the body.

Well just a simple question, what do you think the mark on the thigh is?

I saw a cartoon recently that showed an "untatooed" young person and a "tatooed" young person with this dialogue:

Untatooed person: "How are you going to feel in the nursing home when those tatoos are sagging?"

Tatooed person: "How are you going to feel being the only person in the nursing home without a tatoo?"

Probably grateful and a little smug. When did following the majority become the standard for right vs. wrong?

Manotruth, I am assuming that you feel tattoos are bad. What is your support for this other than personal opinion. Tattoo laws here are 18. If it were not so restrictive I would have aleady gotten my two teenagers their first tats.

That is so true!

We like to joke about the future, us sitting around in our rockers with blue and orange hair, covered in tattoos, listening to NIN or whatever - I know, socially and more intimately, very few people with no tattoos - from teenagers to Ivy league college professors in their 60s.

Why? For what reason? Why would you make a decision for your teenagers (who I assume still have some maturing to do) that will likely affect them the rest of their lives?

There is no law here against me painting my house bright yellow with purple polka dots, but that doesn't mean it would be a good thing to do.

How would getting a butterfly or dragonfly on their ankle afect them for life? My 12 yr ls son just got his ear pierced. Is he now doomed for eternity? Yo still have not offered any proof or support on why tats are destructive or evil.

You didn't say previously where or how big the tattoo was going to be. I still don't think it is a good idea, even if they are small and easily covered. That begs the question, if they are not going to be seen anyway, what is the purpose of them?

If your son has a relationship with Christ, then, no, he is not "doomed for eternity". But, again, what is the reason for a 12-year-old boy having his ear pierced?

I never said tattoos were destructive or evil. I just don't think they are a good idea. Sometimes, rather than just saying, "The Bible doesn't specifically call something a sin, so I'm going to do it", maybe we should ask ourselves what benefit is there to doing something. I just don't really see anything positive about marking up one's body and having piercings.

Self centeredness and invididualism is what most on here seemto follow I guarantee you if you start on those two issues you'll rattle some peoples nerves. Apparently because "God Said so" isnt good enough for anybody anymore you have to call fire out of Heaven to snap them into common sense.

Apparently being separate from the world has taken a whole new conntation now. I can't even tell the difference of a Christian and a non Christian anymore literally, why is that? This issue definetly by far isnt helping. All I get is "what would it hurt", "its not killing anybody". All you'll really get is a load of excuses from people. My ever so favorite is "its my way of evangelism". Apparently letting Christ shine through you internally producing externally has tranformed into Christ on outside barely showing what's really there on the inside. Really sad to tell you the truth.

So should we be what Christ commanded and show his love and help the needy or be whitewashd tombs? Should we just get the flattop crew, navy blue poylester suits, amd speak only churchese? God does not care what we look like as long as it is not immodest. Tattoos and earrings are not forbidden. Jeans are allowed. We can be individuals and still honor the Lord. He cares more about the inside than the outside. Man cars more about the outside than the inside. By the way what does a Christian look like?
