I'm planning on using pre-folds, but I've got no experience for you yet =)
Tammy - how did washing the dipes work in your front-loader? We're thinking about investing in one because of all the water needed to wash diapers.

Alright ladies, anyone sew their own diapers? My MIL and grandma-in-law (GIL) thought that it would be nice to make me some diapers out of some flannel that GIL has lying around with no use for. They're making hour-glass shaped diapers. I talked to GIL yesterday and she said she's thinking the amount of fabric she has will make between 1 - 1.5 dozen diapers. I've read that it's good to have 2 dozen on hand so you can wash every other day. Do I then just buy a dozen prefolds to make up the number and use them interchangeably? How do you find your handmade dipes function compared to prefolds?

I am interested in hearing about the home-made dipes too... Kim, what about just buying the fabric to make up the difference? Although nice prefolds are probably cheaper.
I am waiting on a call back from the diaper service, there are 3 in our area and the one I really want to use doesn't deliver to our city but the receptionist said it's ultimately up to the driver. So that is who I am waiting on a call from.

I use pre-folds...and I like them. They are less expensive and wash and dry easy. They are easy to double as well if you have a heavy wetter or for at night time. In the summer...I don't use a cover of any kind unless we are going out of the house....more air gets to the bum that way...

What size is GIL making? There's roughly 3 sizes; infant, standard, and toddler. I think they make newborn/preemie as well but most people skip that.
I made my own prefolds for the newborn stage because none of my other one-size diapers fit until 10+ lb. I couldn't see buying an extra set for that month (or less) when they are under 10lb.
Diaper flannel is not that expensive or you can buy some cheap Walmart flannel with a pattern and cut up some old towels for the middle. Anything that sucks up liquid well. Very easy to sew. If you know someone with a serger its even easier.

I would *think* she's making infant-sized. She said she's using the flannel and an hourglass shape - and she does have a serger, so I'm sure they'll be nice. I guess I've just gotta trust that she used them for her kids and knows what she's doing!!

The flat diapers are also good as burp cloths.

like Donna said they are good for burp cloths (so are receiving blankets, they cover a lot more then just the little things you throw over your shoulder, and with some babies coverage is a good thing!!!)...or cleaning cloths (they work great for if you want to cut down on using paper towels and instead use something you can wash and reuse!!!). You could also easily layer them together and sew them into inserts you could use...I personally would place something more absorbent in the middle of the layers if you do that (old flannel or something...to make them a doubler of sorts). Or you could do wipes with them...I would do a couple of layers for wipes too though...just to make sure they are thick enough to be useful.

I just wanted to thank all of the people on here who are posting. My hubby and I are trying for number 2 and were worried about buying diapers for two. My mom suggested cloth and at first i thought she was nuts but after reading through here and doing some math (we end up saving almost 600 in the first yr alone and thats with buying all the diapers and stuff to begin with.) We decided to do cloth. I was really surprised that my dh was so open tho the idea. Thanks for all who had advice.
I guess my biggest question now is what type of covers does everyone use and where can you get them cheap? I prefer to buy stuff at wal-mart cuz i get a discount but i'm open to any suggestions.

Oh you have no idea how big you may need them to be!!!!! Our first was so bad with spitting up that he could soak through two receiving blankets every feeding!!!!
flannel.....check the price at the store, but also don't forget that flannel is better after being washed over and over, so don't forget to check discount clothing store (like salvation army or goodwill or things like that) for old flannel shirts.
for wipes I personally would do 3-4 layers...if they are thicker like t-shirt thickness, then I may do less....but I have this aversion to poop. I can't stand bathroom issues (and even a cleaning the bathroom freak)...so for me, the thicker the better. For wipes we use baby wash cloths, and those are pretty thick (and the perfect size to fold in half and store in a regular wipe holder for the diaper bag!!!)
If you don't have doublers though, and plan on diapering at night, I would make some of those with the material. You could do flannel for lining them, or look for wool. It is a natural repellent to wetness, so if you put it up against baby's bum it pulls the wetness away and helps keep them dryer (esp at night when they might be in a wet diaper longer then daytime when they and you are awake more)
ok...covers....the brand we have is made in Australia and is no longer sold here in the US...it's called Wonderoos. If I had to buy more though I would go with Bum Genius....those are very similar to what we have. The most important thing to remember with any covers is to NOT dry them on a heat setting...either air dry them or turn the dryer onto air only dry. We just pull ours straight out of the washer and lay them out over the top of the dryer and they are usually dry before the inserts are done in the dryer though...it doesn't take them too long. Heat drying them will make them lose their effective wetness narrier though. I would personally stay away from any covers that are lined with plastic...those can get their bottom's very hot and diaper rash to occur. With so many good covers out there that don't have plastic, I would not choose to use that if at all possible.

Alright - lol - what's a doubler?? I realized that we've got 2 doz newborn prefolds PLUS 14 flannel diapers that Brad's grandma made ... so I suppose those could be considered doublers? Our prefolds are DSQ, so they're 4-8-4 construction, and the ones G'ma made are hourglass shaped and 2-4-2 construction. Would that we a "correct" amount of flannel to be considered a doubler? I have NO IDEA how much stuffing to put in diapers - especially at night! I know when June Bug's newborn and waking every 2-3 hours to eat I'll probably change him/her at every feed, but later on, do you basically just experiment until you get the amount of absorbency you need?

I wanted to tell everyone about a site I found for cloth diaper CHEAP!
www.babybestbuy.com they have velcro diapers there for only 2.99 a peice or 12 for $30. You still have to use covers with them but hey - no pins!!!! Just wanted to pass along the site.

a doubler is usually just a small insert...about the size of a maxi pad really that does into the diaper right long the crotch area to 'double' the absorbancy of the diaper...they are great for heavy wetters, overnight and long car trips (you still need to change often..but it prevents leak throughs!)

Honestly....haven't tried yet. Especially with this being #4 I've been lacking motivation to actually start using the cloth again. I asked DH what he thought and he doesn't want to bother. I'd probably have been able to be convinced to do it again if he wanted me to, but now that he doesn't, I don't think I'll be able to convince myself. One of the girls at church is using cloth for her first, so I think I'll give her my diaper collection.
