flower, lol I was like that yesterday...grouchy and this morning I got up as happy and high as a kite having had major insomnia. I figured I'd probably start soon and sure enough it did when I got up around 9 a.m. You want to know something weird? My husband and I went to Sam's Club to shop and I decided to pick up some Kotex pads. I just started using pads at Christmas when we were in the states. They are soooo thin now, like panty liners and have the absorbent protection you all know. These pads are smaller, but a little thicker. There is tons of fragrant t.p. in Mexico because many can't flush the toilet. Well, these pads also have the manzana/apple fragrance that I like but there's no absorbent protection that keeps it away from your skin, nasty!!! I think I'll donate the box of pads to the kids home, LOL I'm spoiled!!!!!!!

I don't find that Kotex work all that well for me. I find that Always is the best brand for me. Much more absorbent.

Thanks for the comment diva, I was thinking about that because the pads from the state are Always! So, Kotex is like that in the US too, huh? Strange what's available in Mexico. I tried one Kotex pad and don't like it at all! Although I did think it interesting and nice that on the wings, there is Velcro so the pad isn't glued around your panty.

I prefer the Always brand, but often use Kotex because they go on sale more often and the price is lower even when not on sale. I have wondered if I'm allergic to the Kotex, because if I wear them too many days in a row, I get itchy bumps. Maybe it would happen with any pads, I'm not sure. Doesn't happen with kotex panty liners though.

The itchy bumps could be from the kotex pads not being absorbent enough. Poor thing.

I always get itchy bumps towards the end of my period, right where the pad rubs.

Hey, I'd be happier NOT to have a period. I spotted for two weeks before starting, and the last couple of days have been Greetings from the Cramp Ranch. I'd like for whoever came up with that slogan to actually put up with what we do and then we'd see if they think periods are happy. Sheesh.

About how long is it from the time you start having menopausal symptoms (skipped periods, hot flashes) until it's all over with?

I don't think there's any set time period for duration of peri/menopause - it seems to depend a lot on the individual. You aren't officially considered to be in menopause until you haven't had a period for a year, so you don't know for sure until the end of that year. I have a friend who's in her 50s who went for almost a year without a period, then she started again. Boy, was she peeved. Does anyone have home remedies, like herbal supplements, vitamins, etc., for cramping and heavy bleeding? Yesterday morning it seemed like it was all trying to come out at once, if you know what I mean, and Advil and Tylenol didn't help the cramps much. I felt better later that day, but I get so tired of being miserable a couple of days a month.

I used Ibuprofen for a long time, because the Physician's Assistant at my doctor's office said that actually calms the cramping action. And it worked well (versus Tylenol and Advil). And then a couple of years ago the Ibuprofen stopped doing the trick, so I got a prescription from my doctor for cramps. The prescription meds are equal to about four Advil. I know those aren't home remedies, but I hope this is helpful info.

I know there is no "set" time -- I was just wondering generally if it was a couple of years, 5, 10 or what. I did know you weren't considered officially through menopause until after being without a period for a year. But I was just wondering how long the preliminary stuff went on, generally. I know if varies from person to person. It would be so nice to just stop having period without all the back and forth starting and skipping and flooding, but I guess it just doesn't work like that. :(

ORIGINAL: Memaw. Some definitions taken from WebMD. Premenopause. Some experts feel that this term should include the entire reproductive period up to the final menstrual cycle whereas others consider it to refer to women on the cusp of menopause. Their periods have just started to get irregular, but they do not yet experience any classic menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes or vaginal dryness. A woman in premenopause is usually in her mid-to-late 40s. If your doctor tells you that you're premenopausal, you might want to ask him or her how he or she is using this term. # Perimenopause. This term refers to women who are in the thick of menopause. Their cycles may be erratic, and they may begin to experience hot flashes and vaginal dryness. On average, women are about 47 when they hit the perimenopause stage. # Menopause. This refers to your final menstrual period. You will not be able to pinpoint your final period until you've been completely free from periods for one year. Then, you count back to the last period you charted, and that date is the date of your menopause. Note: After more than one year of no menstrual periods due to menopause, any vaginal bleeding is now considered abnormal. # Postmenopausal. This term refers to the last third of most women's lives, ranging from women who have been free of menstrual periods for at least one year to women celebrating their 100th birthday and beyond. In other words, once you're past menopause, you'll be referred to as postmenopausal for the rest of your life.

Women are starting earlier now. It could be due to fast-paced lifestyles & stress. My first irregular period was at age 39. I'm 46 now & just started wearing Depends a couple of months ago due to extremely heavy flows that can't be held in regular pads. I have no one genetically to base it on because my mom didn't start having any of the symptoms till 50 & seemed to be finished by 54. I don't have extreme hot flashes, but can say that when many women are cold I'm okay or warm. A lot of it for me could be weight related. I do experience insomnia a few nights a month too. According to the previous post, I would possibly still be in the premenopause stage, but I have called it peri all along because I never had any abnormal periods prior to 39 or any kind or female problem. kd

Also, number of days for a period changes & you can't really determine how long it lasts. I can go up to 10 days just because of residual blood passing after day 6. kd

Does anyone have home remedies, like herbal supplements, vitamins, etc., for cramping and heavy bleeding? Ibuprofen, vitamins B6, B12, & folic acid reduces bleeding, while Black Cohash, flaxseed, & soy are supposed to help with cramps and licorice (pills) are supposed to help with both.

Re: Black Cohosh...... Be sure to read up on it. It is a good remedy, however women that have a family history of breast cancer should think twice. There is thought to be a trigger to breast cancer in those that already have it, causing it to become more aggressive. And since it sometimes hard to first diagnose asymptomatic breast cancer, it is a consideration. Also liver function tests should be done periodically when using this herb. quote:
The mechanism of action of black cohosh remains unclear, and the effects on estrogen receptors or hormonal levels (if any) have not been fully elucidated. Recent publications suggest that there may be no direct effects on estrogen receptors, although this is an area of active controversy. Safety and efficacy data beyond six months are not available, although recent reports suggest safety of short-term use, including in women experiencing menopausal symptoms for whom estrogen replacement therapy is contraindicated. Nonetheless, due to a lack of long-term follow-up, caution is advisable until better-quality safety data are available. Use of black cohosh in high-risk populations (such as in women with a history of breast cancer) should be under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional I am not a health professional.... but I would err on the side of safety. As a woman that has a family history of breast cancer, I will avoid it. Although I am vigilant about self examination and mammograms..... one never knows if/when a cancer will start. KWIM?
