Here is a situation that I've seen three times now. An emcee will say something like, "Here's a brand new song that we are singing on stage for the first time tonight." Flash forward a few months. I'm seeing the same group somewhere else (or in one case listening to them on the live radio coverage of NQC.) The same emcee introduces the same song, again claiming this is the first time they are ever performing it on stage. What's up with that? This has happened with three different groups.
This raises a few questions with me...
1. Why does he think it's okay to lie?
2. Are we concert attendees really THAT impressed with being the first to hear a new song?
3. Don't they realize people are going to catch on to this?

They may have been able to get away with it before the days of the Internet, but now when fans all over the place can report on various concerts to one another, it doesn't work.
On that topic, [EDIT: On second thought, this was negative, so away it goes.]

I've heard the same jokes over and over at various SG concerts. Mercy's Mark tells one where they pick on a state and they change the state from one concert to the next. That joke always goes over well whenever I've seen it. I think it's just a matter of picking a state that they're not in or very close to at the moment - - - all in good fun!

Exactly. Most of the jokes that SG artists do are just that... jokes. So I don't even expect them to be serious about them. But I do wonder when a group tells several different audiences that they are the first to hear a song. Why not say, "It's still fairly new. What do you think?" Honest question there.

Well, it is the first time they are singing it on that stage.
Maybe we should show a little charity and grant poetic license to our traveling troubadours.

I would rather a group say something like, "Here's our new single" or "Here's our latest release" rather than trying to make the crowd feel special that they were the "first" to hear their "new" song......

I do not approve of the practice described in this thread, even if there is some sort of disclaimer inferred. I can not see any benefit to making a false statement for whatever reason. If the MC can't think of any true way to introduce the song, then just announce the song and who's featured. I don't even like the repetitve jokes that are so prevalent. I sometimes travel 100 + miles in different directions to hear the same groups sing. A group should not think that even though they have never been within 200 miles of a venue that there are not people there who have heard them recently.

It occurs to me that when I pay my money and go to hear a concert from this group or that, I really don’t care to listen to their old jokes and mindless snappy patter; I want to hear them sing. For me it’s about that simple.
In an hour concert on stage I think we spent less than two minutes talking on average. Our fans come to hear us sing, not talk, we can do that later in the meet and greet at the product table.

I disagree Jim.
I'm sure that what you do works well for you, but I enjoy a little humor.
And we can't expect the group's emcee to tell different jokes every night, any more than we should expect all new songs every concert.
IMO, the humor should be replenished at the end of each tour.
One of the things that made a Cathedrals concert, for example, so fun to attend was George's great use of humor.
Christians have more fun than anybody, and Christians enjoying themselves through laughter shows this to the unsaved. We have a reason to be joyful.

I agree with what my friend Kerrlaw said, that a little humor is okay. I prefer it to be spontaneous, but not to the point that it overshadows the singing or the reasons for the songs. I have heard a group say they are singing a song in a concert for the first time, but I usually do not let that bother me whether I believe the statement or not. I, too, wish the stories would change periodically, because I have heard the same group tell the same story as many as 3 times, sometimes at the same venue 2 years in a row.

Well, I can think of one group who makes the same jokes about the tenor's personality ever year, even though they have had three different tenors. I suppose they need to try something new, but other than that, I am fine with most group's jokes.

I used to go see a certain group alot (at least twice a month)... so much in fact that I could say the every joke verbatim right along with them (I didn't, but I COULD)... I think that's when it's time for new stage material...
Even so... It's not like the entire audience could... I mean, I had to take into consideration that most of the audience hadn't seen them as much as I had, and enjoyed it. I loved them, but I was sick of their jokes.

My point exactly.
I called SG singers troubadours and bigboy asked whether they might be trouveres.
It is obvious that Gerald Wolfe, et al., use the language of the south and are therefore troubadours.
