Turn Your Radio On.1993 (but probably recorded in 1992)

The production is getting a lot bigger and somewhat more sophisticated with this video. The little picture looks like about 100 people participated.

It was soon after the deaths of Paul Downing and Earl Weatherford that this assembly was held, and there were a lot of tears and hugs throughout.

Eva Mae LeFevre made a touching talk about the deaths that had occurred among her loved ones, and brought laughter with her story about her father, who was still living. She was about 74 at the time, and her father was close to (or over ) 100.

So many beautiful songs, from Vestal's renditions of This Is Just What Heaven Means To Me and 'Til The Storm Passes By to George Younce and Larry Ford being featured on I Know Who Holds Tomorrow, and many many other great songs. I don't want to forget Looking For A City featuring Vestal and Johnny Cook, with Wally Varner on the piano.

It was interesting to see all the young (at the time) artists, like Scott Fowler, Ernie Haase, Roger Bennett, and others. Bill sat (or stood) the youngsters in the back and put the old saints up front, as it should be.

The highlight for me was an unplanned appearance of the Fairfield Four, who just happened by and brought down the house with Dig A Little Deeeper In God's Love. Fantastic!

My only complaint (and this is an ongoing one) is that I wish Bill did a little more to identify the artists. Sometimes there names are shown on screen, sometimes not. There were at least a dozen folks that I had no idea who they were. And they are not all listed on the jacket and liner notes either.

Overall, one of the warmer, slower and more touching videos in the series.

Russ Taff had hair that was fuller, darker, and longer that Guy Penrod's is today. Many of the male artist's wore an ear ring.

Glad I don't own that one...

Yep. I am.

But I try to not be obnoxious about it.

Plus, it really isn't Amy's fault.

Am really enjoying your reviews. I have not seen "Reunion" for a long time, but I like to take a trip back in time and see what people looked like, too, and I really agree on what you said about knowing who people are now but not when you originally watched it. It is amazing how many of the early homecoming singers have now passed on and are singing with Jesus.

Tonight was "date night" for me and Mrs. Kerrlaw, so we went to Red Lobster and did a little shopping (bought the new DVD of the Lady Vols National Championship run).

Old Friends will have to wait. Just as well, since we will have to retrieve it from an old friend we loaned it to.

Something funny happened while reading the previous post. Just as I read the words Red Lobster, the commercial on TV said Red Lobster. Exactly the same time. Was not paying attention to the commercial until that happened. Weird!!!!!

Old Friends 1993 (part 1).

We watched the first half of Old Friends last night before sleep overtook us (we are almost geezers, you know).

It appeared to have been recorded at the same time as Turn Your Radio On, based on the appearance of the room and the clothing of the artists. This would begin the ongoing tradition of getting a "two-fer" from each recording session.

Many highlights from the first half included nice stories from Stephen Weatherford and from Greg Cook (following the Florida Boys superb rendition of When He Was On the Cross. We also especially enjoyed The Old Gospel Ship featuring GVB, Vestal, and Russ Taff.

Mrs. Kerrlaw and I agree that the part that we enjoyed most was Doug Oldham singing a medley of Thanks To Calvary/I'm Free/The King is Coming. I looked up Mr. Oldham and it appears that he still performs regularly. I would love to see him in concert.

More will follow later.

All I have to do is think the words Red Lobster and Mrs. Kerrlaw is ready to roll.

We loved Doug Oldham's number also! There is nobody who can sing a song with more expression than Doug! Very moving.

No too long ago I heard that he was having some severe health issues. I hope those were resolved and he can continue his ministry for a long time!

Old Friends )part 2).

It is hard to express how much I enjoy seeing these older artists, mostly now gone, perform together. I enjoy the interviews and pictures about as much of the singing.

Much of the second half was focused on the Goodmans. We loved the interviews with Howard and Vestal, the footage of Rusty and Sam, and the interview with Tanya Goodman Sykes.

The highlight of the video for me was when Vestal asked everyone to stretch out their hands to Jake Hess (who had been very ill) and she said a beautiful prayer, asking God to preserve Jake's health and voice. IT WORKED. He lived another 12 years, performing most of that time.

Then Jake sang one of my favorites: Then I Met the Master and was joined on the second verse by James Blackwood and Glen Payne. A great Gaither video moment.

The Homecoming Friends singing Old Friends while pictures of the session were on screen closed out the video. I love going to a Homecoming concert. Bill almost always starts out with Old Friends and it sets a great mood for the concert.

I can't wait for the next one.

edited for spelling typo.

Doug Oldham has been one of my favorite singers for many years. Met him in person several years ago and then again at World Premier one year. Good man.

At Saturday night's concert, Gerald Wolfe talked about a recent Gaither taping he attended and spoke about how he (Gerald) is now in the "older" range since so many have passed away. I'm quite a bit older than Gerald, so it's humorous to hear him talk about being one of the "older" ones!!

Gerald IS getting older but I think his wife Donna is getting younger from the photos posted from their Hawaiian Cruise. They are a cute couple! And their son has his driver's permit now. Lookout East Tennessee drivers for Big Ben!

Yes, we should all pray for the Wolfes and for all those unsuspecting souls driving in East Tennessee!! Just kidding! I'm sure Ben will be a fine driver!

I resemble that remark.

It's bad enough dodging Rodney Griffin.

Wonder if Ben will be in a Mercedes?

Yea, I could see Rodney driving pretty spaced out thinking up another "My Name Is Lazarus."

Landmark, 1993 (part 1)

It took us several nights, because of other obligations, to finish watching Landmark, but it was worth the effort. This video started strong and got better as it went along.

After the openin Revive Us Again, featuring Vestal Goodman, the next six songs were fast paced, featuring several legends. This was followed by a nice tribute to Stuart Hamblen, featuring his songs including It Is No secret and This Old House.

Although they didn't tell this story, I was reminded of the time Stuart Hamblen was on Hee Haw. He apparently wrote This Old House to be a slow and solemn song and was dismayed when it was released by Rosemary Clooney as the fast paced hit that we generally know it as today. He said he got over it really quick when it was #1 on the Billboard charts and sold several million copies. It was still paying the rent 20 years later.

I really enjoyed But For The Grace Of God and These Things Shall Pass, both featuring Bill Gaither. These were my two favorites on his recent solo album, which everyone should own. It was an unexpected blessing.

Mrs. Kerrlaw commented how Gerald looked like a little boy in the early videos, as did Roger Bennett.

While most of the artists are showing a little more age over the 15 or so years, Janet Paschal and Kirk Talley seem to have changed hardly at all.

Landmark (part 2)

The first part was good, but the second half of Landmark was great, probably one of my favorite segments of all the Gaither Homecoming videos.

There was a feature on Jake Hess, my favorite singer and IMHO the greatest gospel singer of all time. Interviews with Jake and members of the Hess family were sandwiched between God Takes Good Care of Me (when Jake says it, you really believe it), and Death Ain't No Big Deal. There was good footage of the Statesmen singing The Old Landmark. I could watch Jake and the Statesmen every day.

This was followed by Vestal, Johnny Minick and Michael English singing I Hold A Clear Title, followed by a segment with Charles Johnson and the Revivors. They sang I Can't Even Walk, then Charles did a narrative, then they sang The Winds of This World.

Next was an anniversary tribute to Faye and Brock Speer (45 years?)

This was followed, in succession, by: The Family of God - Bill Gaither, The Lighthouse - The Hinsons, He's Still Working On Me- The Hemphills, Victory in Jesus- David Ring, and Roses Will Bloom Again- Jeff and Sheri Easter. WOW! What a lineup of songs.

Sheri Easter was about four weeks from birthin' her baby girl, and looked beautiful.

When I get to heaven, one thing I want to see is David Ring singing Victory in Jesus with his new body and voice. His earthly version thrills be no end, so I can only imagine how beautiful it will be.

Following a prayer for Sheri and her baby, the video closed with Gentle Shepherd, a fine narrrative by Gloria Gaither, and Great Is Thy Faithfulness, featuring Mylon LeFevre.

A fantastic video that I strongly recommend to everyone.

I am sure glad you added the last part that you were waiting 'til Dec. to see them again. However I still have a Christmas CD in my vehicle CD player. It is one of six CD's so it is not every song. I use the random button so it skips about. And I have not had this CD very long. My doctor made it. Just piano. VERY GOOD!.

Precious Memories 1994.

After the fantastic Landmark, I was looking forward to Precious Memories, which was filmed at the same time. Sorry to say it was a disappointment.

It started out with some fast paced songs by the Homecoming Friends, like Goodbye, World, Goodbye, and I Will Meet You in the Morning, but nothing that followed really moved me.

Jessy Dixon was featured for the first time and took the lead on Highway To Heaven and Sanctuary, but he had not yet perfected the style that makes us want to boogie.

An (uncredited on the liner notes) tribute to Glen Payne offered promise, but was poorly done and appeared to have been filmed back stage at a concert. In fact, the whole video felt like it was pieced together with the leftovers not used in Landmark.

If there was a highlight, it was the Talleys (Roger, Debra, Kirk) singing Thinkin' About Home followed by George younce featured on Going Home.

Looking forward to All Day Singing next.

Don't forget about the Ray Boltz classic..."Thank You". Everybody was crying in the studio during that performance, that was a highlight of this video.
