The band is on hiatus for the summer. For us this is nice because it gives us a break. Whenever we can though, we still get together on Thursday nights for practice. Without an impending deadline, we now have opportunities that would otherwise prove more difficult due to time restraints. We can look at new songs we’d like to add to our play list which now spans seven pages of song titles. The song Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone (Chris Tomlin) was on the schedule to be worked up by the band. After playing with the key signature to find a good vocal range for our lead singer, it went quite well. Previously while studying the CD, several people had come up to me and stated how much they loved the song. Also it allows us the time to just have some fun. While I was sorting through the sheet music and filing them away, a couple pieces caught my eye as something fun to play. I kept them out and we played through them since we still had some time. We played through Crooked Deep Down (Derek Webb), A Living Prayer (Alison Krause) and Your Man (Josh Turner)...just for fun.

A while back for my birthday, I was given the CD and sheet music to ‘My Mother’s Hymn Book’ The band has already adopted one cut from this album, ‘I Shall Not Be Moved’. At the end of band practice, I discussed reviewing the album for more potential additions to our play list. ‘I’ll Fly Away’, ‘In the Garden’, ‘Softly and Tenderly’ and ‘Just As I Am’ are already staples for the band. This morning provided an opportunity to listen with fresh ears this album while on the way to work. Traffic was very light early on a Saturday pre-dawn morning and I was alone instead of the usual carpool. This is a no-frills album, recorded in his home studio in a single day just before his death. As the title suggests, it is comprised of the contents from the tattered pages of a hymn book he had inherited from his mother. The legendary voice is prominent and an acoustic guitar is quietly heard in the background from a single microphone. That’s it folks. It doesn’t get much simpler than that…or more beautiful. Of course I can’t help but sing along. The windshield is as good as any monitor speaker, and I find myself doing what I do naturally…harmonizing in bass. As a child I remember listening to the distinctive voice of Johnny Cash. I couldn’t believe how deep his voice was. Now I find myself toying with various intervals in close harmony, thirds fifths and full octaves below him. My how perspectives change as you get older. Thanks Johnny, for leaving us with this treasure.

Hi Ray. "A Living Prayer" is a song I like. I'm glad you're having a break from the band. It's good to just be able to take a break sometimes and recharge the batteries. Makes everything fresher when you get back to it.

I love listening to a good bass voice, especially in acapella.

I love singing a capella...as long as it's not a solo.

Yeah right. I can sing soprano, but even some of my notes sound like somebody's trying to strangle a cat. Need to learn to open my throat more instead of constricting it for the higher notes.

It helps me to stay relaxed and then the throat relaxes too.

I get nervous when I know the really high notes are coming.
