Finally broke down and got a new cell phone. I've had the old one for years. It didn't even have a camera. We figured out that it was about six years old.

My wife had decided to upgrade her cell phone two years after I had first gotten this one. (And she's upgraded several times since.) Talking to the sales person at that time (years ago), I described that if I were to upgrade then it would have to be a rugged phone that wouldn't break easily. He looked at my phone and suggested that I'd be better off keeping the one I had.

This time it was different.

The phone had finally developed a problem in which anyone that I called had a difficult time hearing me. It was steadily getting worse.

The salesperson's eyes light up when I mentioned needing a sturdy phone. He had one specifically in mind that would suit my needs.

It does have a camera, but is fairly stark of other gadgets and whatever that I'll never use anyway. I got a bundle that included a car charger that will come in handy, a case, and a bluetooth that I'll probably never use.

With discounts and rebates and whatever, the phone was free. The biggest accessory cost was an over-sized battery. I got outta there for less than $100.

Yay on the cell phone deal! I have the same trouble when I go in...finding a phone that is what I want/need without it being full of useless junk. I want it to make calls and text...that's about it! I have used my camera phone a few times, but would be fine without it.

You may be surprised at the car charger. It's saved me a few times when I commute to school and am gone all day and have forgotten to charge it. I need to get a bluetooth device soon. It's illegal now to drive and use a cell unless you have a bluetooth device. I never did much of that anyway, but just in case.

I had a car charger for the old one and used it once in a while. They're nice to have. I too hardly ever use the cell phone while driving. It's amazing how many people do. Here it's not illegal.

Ray, I'm really glad you had a good time away. Good to have you relaxing.

Good for you keeping away from the s'mores. I'm not keen on marshmallows, so that would have been easy for me anyway, but other things might not have been so easy.

Mashmallows would be really bad because of the hight glycemic index. They're just about pure sugar.

Just as well I don't like them then.

The only thing I use my mobile phone for is to text and call. I wouldn't even know how to use a camera on a phone.

It just went into effect July 1, and they are really taking it seriously, at least for now. Most people drive like lunatics on the freeway, texting and talking like it's a game. I have had so many close calls on the way to school because people were too busy talking and not watching traffic. It makes me furious! If they want to risk their own lives, have at it, but when they risk mine and my families, I get a little bent out of shape!

Whenever we see someone doing something stupid in traffic we look over and 9 times out of 10 they're on the cell phone. I've even had trucks veer off into my lane because they were dialing.

Me too. It's scary. The texting is the worst. I am stunned by the people who text while driving, and on busy freeways at rush hour! That's beyond insane. The teenagers are the worst. Here, with the new law, no one under 18 can use a cell in the car at all, not even with a bluetooth. I'm glad. I hope it helps.

It's illegal to drive here whilst using a mobile phone. You're supposed to pull over if you need to use your phone. I'm amazed at how many people still use their phones when they're driving though.

One time we saw a mini-van driving erratically. We looked over and the driver was eating corn-on-the-cob with both hands...steering with the elbows.

In cases like tis people should use Call Waiting: the person on the other end has to wait until all driving has stopped.

Yep.

We've seen lots of things...paperbacks precariously perched on the steering wheel...TV sets proped up on the dash...drivers tapping away at a laptop next to them.

Yep...seen 'um all. Most of our commute is on an interstate highway. People can be pretty amazing.

A friend of mine used to play his guitar while driving. He'd stick the guitar neck out the window. He now admits that he doesn't do that anymore.

I'm pleased to hear it. One of my pet peeves is people on their mobile phones whilst they're driving. Even if they have no regard for themselves, they should have more regard for other road users.

Have you ever heard back from that man who came into the church whilst you were setting up for a non-existant music practice? His name escapes me at the moment.

I'm glad he still feels that he can contact you. Did he say how he's doing?

Yeah. He said that he's finally getting some help. He has a place to stay, and that his wife is doing better and (I think) out of the hospital. He was looking for a ride to church, but we were off camping. I have no way of contacting him.
