ORIGINAL: AmericanTenor I simply get exausted watching people who sit at home, (without a clue of what it takes out of you to do this), become experts of what we do. I have years of experience at this and I still get my feelings hurt sometimes by what people say. You must have a thick skin. My prayer is that Joseph, and young people like him, simply realize that there are thousands more out here who love and appreciate them. It is a pleasure to be associated with such respectful and honorable young people. Southern Gospel has a bright future and I am glad to be a small part of it. Dan, While I completely understand your frustration at hearing someone react to what you do in a negative manner, it seems to me you're advocating a "rose colored glasses" sort of attitude among the fans and bloggers who speak out in public. I don't think that's a good thing for this industry at all. It creates huge egos in many cases. Have you read Michael English's autobiography? He came up through this industry in a time where some of the fans went Elvis-style crazy over the artists. This, among other issues, led to many problems for him. His book should be required reading for every aspiring superstar. Perhaps some potential pitfalls could be avoided for the next generation of singers. In the 1980s we didn't have outlets for the average fan to express an opinion where it could be read by many, so he was isolated from the sort of discussions artists to day have to face. You mentioned developing a thick skin. That's a good thing, in my opinion...perhaps a little painful as it develops, but it makes you a stronger person as you grow older. Let me just state this, so hopefully you'll understand where I'm coming from more clearly. As a blogger, any time I write anything constructive, it's because I truly want to see Southern Gospel rise to a higher standard of quality. I love this music. Believe it or not, there are some artists and record execs in the industry who understand this. I know this is true because they've told me they appreciate it and they've asked me and other bloggers to continue to express our opinions, whether positive or negative. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not getting that same feeling from what you're saying. I'm hearing, "Bloggers should just shut up," rather than, "There are more polite ways to offer constructive criticism than this."
