That's what the golfers probably thought!

I think it was the only place they could hold the eventing.

Eventing is a competition held over a few days. First day is dressage, second is cross-country and the last day is show-jumping. There's a team event and individual event ~ each team (country) has up to 5 riders and the best 3 scores/times are used. If a country doesn't have enough riders to make up a team, or if the riders are eliminated individuals from that country can still compete. I think China had just one rider and he came off in the cross-country, which means automatic elimination.

The show-jumping is tomorrow (Tuesday). The Germans were awarded gold in Athens but then lost it because it emerged that one of the riders had gone the wrong way or something. They kicked up a fuss about it (naturally), but we (Britain) got gold in the end!

Britain are third right now, behind the Australians and Germans (in first). But it's show-jumping, anything could happen ~ including them going the wrong way again (though that rider isn't competing this year).

There, that's probably as clear as mud isn't it?

So this is an international event? Are all categories held in one country in a given year? Why are they doing this in Britain during the Olympics? Is this not an Olympic sport?

This is part of the Olympics ~ and it's being held in Hong Kong for some reason, not Beijing.

It's being held in Hong Kong because of the smog problem. They don't want the horses to suffer it.

So who gets the medal, the horse or the rider?

LOL ~ so people are taking better care of the horses than they are of the athletes. Sounds about right!

The horses don't even get to stand on the podium when the medals are presented.

Poor horsey

I'm sure that DeeDee would let him stand next to her on a dias.

I suppose it is the trainer and the rider who are working to make the horse do as he should. The horse is the same as a bicycle. But can you picture all the athletes up their with their 'tools' A bucket of water from the pool, a hurdle. You get the idea.

I don't see the trainers up there getting the medals.

And since when do bicycles eat oats?

They eat my pants legs - they are more like goats...

They do show shots of the joyous coaches around the same time when the winners go back to hug and thank them.

Then again, I don't watch equestrine sports, maybe they hug the horse...

It's like when a racecar driver wins. He says, "My car performed really well tonight. It's all about the car." But when he loses he says, "I just wasn't on my game. .." (or vice versa)

I suspect that the horses are pampered and fussed over more than any human competitor! After the cross country the horses were taken away and cooled down by several grooms! A couple of riders will pat their horse during or as soon as they're over the finishing line. One woman wrapped her arms round her horses neck after dismounting ~ so sweet.

The Germans got gold, Brits bronze. Individuals yet to be decided, but scores are very close now.

Now that'd mess with heads cos a Brit was training the US team (not that it did them much good!) and a German was training the Japanese (I think) team.

Hong Kong has world-class horse facilities, so that makes sense. As for not exposing the horses to the smog of Beijing, they think it's okay for the world's best athlete's to choke their lungs with the smog? Silly Chinese. Silly Olympic committee.

Probably!

Canada has yet to get any medals. :(

Sharon, I'm praying for you.

They may not have won any (though I thought they had) but they seem to have been pretty close at times.

Wouldn't it be cool if hugs helped us lose weight?

Well ... since stress adds to weight gain and hugs help reduce stress, I guess in a way hugs can help us lose weight.

Thank you ALL so much for your thoughts and prayers. Last week was a difficult one for me. It's like I just couldn't pick myself up from this latest blindsided event.
Like being 3/4 of the way up and thinking how much better it's getting and then wham! you're thrown to the ground again! Like the wind being punched out of you. For the first time in the last 7 months plus, I have wanted to "run away". Pull in from everyone.
BUT not from God. I just wanted to be alone with Him.

Today I am doing better and it's time to move on. I'm glad I went on Wednesday to the service, it was uplifting and the funny stories that were told about JR...well, I know it was wonderful for all there.

The hardest part for me was to see my Uncle Richard (who has not been well and looked frail to me) say that he didn't think he was handling things too well, and the agony in his voice and face when he said "both of my kids are... gone"
From this man who drove 80 miles to transport Jeff and I to a hospital 30 miles north of here a few hours after I delivered a little boy (in 1981) who was not going to survive, and sitting and holding my son in this little room we were put in to say good-bye, and sobbing his heart out. Not only for my son, but for the grandchild of his that was stillborn to my cousin Lu Ann several years earlier.
There is so much history with this part of my family.

But oh how it lifted my heart to be able to hug JR's wife and two sons, AND Lu Ann's two sons.
And oh how we all laughed at JR's sil's story about him asking her to go get his Babe Winkelman's Worm Plumper. LOL!!

Again, ALL of you thank you for caring and loving and praying for me. I even had myself worried a little bit there this past week.
But truly it's getting better.

If it makes you feel any better Sharon, I passed you in number of posts and bumped you off the first page.

However, I will be losing about 600 posts over the next week, starting tonight, so I'll have little time to enjoy my moment in the sun.
