No, Astana is not a new team, but this year it is all new riders and coaches. Almost all of the Discovery Channel team moved to Astana this year. As a team, Astana has a long and somewhat controversial history which is part of the reason it was overhauled so drastically this year.

The newest link won't load........but I really like this one.......it gives me the written play by play.......a map of the route.........list who is in break away.......and has a video feed of the actual race........I also love the graph.....tracking distance........

Last fall I was coming home from a ride with my bike on the back of my car. I was sitting at a red light when I looked in the mirror and thought "...this guy isn't slowing down!" BAM!! That was the end of the bike I had been riding for about twenty years. I was wondering how I as going to replace my bike when some guy I work with gave me an old Giant ATX760 that was sitting unused in his attic. I've gotten it out, filled up the tires but there is now about a quarter inch of ice everywhere and more snow on the way.
We have a dozen or more really nice trail around here, with more planned. This area is, and always has been very bicycle friendly.
Lisa, have you considered getting a recumbent? I love those Tadpole recumbents. (Greenspeed, Wizwheelz, etc)

I was cold just watching the race last night............I am excited about the time trial today.....those are always fun to watch.........I hope it doesn't rain though that would really effect the outcome........
I have decided I am cheering for George even though I really like Levi.........watching the piece about HighRoad I was impressed with who they are and what they are trying to do with racing.........very cool.
I also really like David Z and he should do well today...........
I just hope none of my favorites crash........
So many people dropped out yesterday........I heard Levi say it was in the top three of worse days he has experienced the whole time he has been riding.......

I sure can understand why; 135 miles of a very strong headwind with freezing cold rain most of the way, that has got to be tough physically and mentally. I did a century once where the last 50 miles coming back was into strong headwind (like the one they faced yesterday) and even without the rain and cold that was tough.
My boys went with their Grandparents to follow the race. Today they will be watching the time trial in Solvang. Tomorrow they will be racing themselves up in the sierra foothills. Unfortunately the weather predictions are for even wetter and colder weather, but even if it is windy they wont have to face a headwind the entire time because their coarse consists of three 16 mile laps.

From a Comfort point of view one of the most important things is the seat, don't skimp on this item. The ones that come with the bikes are seldom very comfortable and neither are the big fat cushy ones that everybody seems to believe will be comfortable. Because everyone's bodies are a little different sometimes you will have to try a couple before you find the right one, but from my experience Terry saddles are a good place to start (especially for women). Originally the company began making only women's products, and I would guess that about two thirds of the woman I have ridden with use Terry saddles. A lot of men including myself use their men's models but they don't quite have the same market share among men as the do among women.
The other real important aspect of riding comfortably is finding a bike that is correctly fitted. Most bike shops do not do a very good job here, so you do have to be careful when choosing the bike size. Many bike shops choose the size by having you stand over the frame and seeing how tall the bike is, but it is far more important to sit on the bike and see how long the bike is. Most bikes have a lot of room for adjustment of the seat height, but you have very little ability to change the length of the bike (and you always have to change parts to make an adjustment), so it is far more important to make sure the length is correct.
The last important aspect of riding comfortably is using good cycling posture and technique. Keep your upper body relaxed with your arms bent slightly, and do support your weight on you arms, and try to always choose a gear that allows you to peddle at least 70 RPM's.
And most importantly, Enjoy the ride!

We have a rail trail going through town and it used to stop on the county line, but finally they completed a section which connects it to the trail going deep into the adjacent state. I've enjoyed seeing some new sights over there across the state line. So far I've only gone out and back (75 miles, tops), but want to soon spend the night much farther out and come back the next day or so.

Is it a paved trail, or are mountain bikes required? 75 miles is a very long Mtn bike ride!

Wow Dred how many miles does it go? We don't have very many rails to trails yet in Indiana.....the few bike paths we have are only 10-20 miles.
Michigan has a few longer ones but still only one day rides.
Hmmmmmmm maybe in the future I should read all the post before posting LOL........I see you answered my question....
Has anyone ever done the trail in Missouri which starts in St. Louis and goes to Kansas City? When I lived in Missouri I rode parts of it but never had the opportunity to do the whole thing.........I would like too.

Then there is always an option of riding around the lake.......which is about 3000 miles.....I think that might take longer then a day........what do you think?
Speaking of riding around Lake Michigan........I have ridden the lower route across the UP in a day.

Now were talking about a real bike ride! The RAAM guys do about 3000 miles in about 8 days, but that would take most of us a bit longer.
