Manda going outside is a good idea, but if the weather is not good it's not so practical, we have just finished a very hot summer and our yard is not safe anyway so we had to do it indoors, but it is a good idea if you can do that. And I agree with Sarah and Manda, do not make her sit on it if she protests, you just need to let her off and try again later.

Thank you for the ideas to try... Having her go outside, I cant do unfortunately cause of the environment we live in... I havent tried putting her on when I get reading in the morning, cause she just cries and doesnt want to go on.... And also she plays with it by putting her toys in it and all that... Sometimes she will sit on it when I go with her diaper on and then get up a few seconds later.... If I try to take her diaper off she gets upset.... Should I wait to try again with potty training for another month... Or should I just try putting the potty chair in the living room and see what happens....??? Thanks again for all the help and the accouragement.... I appreciate this a lot... I will definately be trying the m and m's.... !! Cause she loves candy....!!

Tanya I wouldn't ask her anymore to go, I would just leave it in the lounge and maybe role play with some teddy's and then leave her to it. Maybe for half the day (like in the morning after her first nappy change) you could leave the nappy off and say the potty is there if you need to go and try and stick around in the room to watch her, otherwise I would just wait a few weeks. But having the potty where she can see it and role playing could help too.

I am looking for advice to get my dd through the night. She is 4 1/2 and has been trained since right around 2, but she cannot get through the night. I am tired of buying pull-ups. She does not drink much after dinner, and I get her up and take her to the bathroom before I go to bed. My son, now 8, potty trained 24/7 from the very beginning. She just does not wake up to go in the middle of the night. Any suggestions would be appreciated...thanks!

Well, if she is a heavy sleeper, it may take some time. Actually, when you take her when you go to bed, is she fully awake? If not, then you are training her to go in her sleep. What I suggest, is that you talk to her about getting up in the night if she has to go. If she has an accident, then help her change her bedding. You can actually layer the bedding so it's not so bad, or even put down one of those crib sized puddle pads, so all you have to wash is that. If she is going more than once in the night, layer the puddle pads.

Actually, she is NOT a heavy sleeper...that is why this has surprised me a little. My son, who sleeps through ANYTHING, did a much better job with this. When I get her up, she is awake. Last night, we talked about why I was getting her up to do this. I make sure that she walks into the bathroom on her own legs. I think that she just goes once during the night. After her accident as 1 am last night, she was dry until she got up at 7. I will look into the layering idea, at least that would make it easier for me in the middle of the night.

What time do you have dinner, what time is her last drink and what time does she go to bed?

I want to know when to start taking Grace out without a nappy. Like yesterday I was in the doctors for an hour but I put a nappy on her because I didn't want her to wet herself or anything while we were out. I guess I just have to make her go before we leave the house and then go again half way through being at the doctor's? She does tell me when she is doing a wee in her nappy when we are out.

How about training pants for going out, nicole? Easier to manage than a nappy. Yes, I'd agree that it's a good idea to get her in the habit of going before you leave, and you could also take a potty with you in the car. You could also make sure she sits on a towel in her car seat, just in case. Does she go on the actual toilet yet, or just the potty?

Those training pants cost a bit though is all, I suppose I could see if they have any no-name brand ones. She goes to the toilet and the potty. The potty is in the lounge so she uses it if she is in her room or the lounge and if she is in the other end of the house she will tell me she needs to go and we take her to the toilet. Good idea about a towel on the seat, and I might leave a pair of knickers and pants in the car too.

Spare knickers (plural!) are a must! I used to carry a couple of pairs in my handbag too, plus some wipes just in case. Did you know that you can get machine washable training pants? They're dearer to start with, but obviously turn out better value in the long run.

Bringing this one back up...we ditched the diapee today and went to cotton training pants, woohoo! Riley (19mos) has been showing all the signs and had been playing with and just sitting on her potty for a while now. I was just waiting for the moment she actually *went* and for her to make the connection and it happened this morning and we have been in full time training mode all day. Here is my question: What activities have you offered while your little one is sitting on the potty? I have a little plastic shelf that serves as a great table top for her so she has had snacks while watching videos, colored, read/played with books, played w/ blocks and she is even having her dinner right now as I type. My plan is to let her be naked (which she loves) as long as she stays on the pot. When she gets up she puts on training panties and if we go anywhere we put on an extra pair along with plastic panties. Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!

Jen I wouldn't put her in pants to go out until she is successfully going to the toilet at home, an accident in public will embarrass her and may not help her at all. I didn't do anything special with Grace, the potty was in the lounge room and she was allowed to sit on it (which she did while she was watching tv). I was training her in summer so we went bare bum the whole day because having pants on was too hard for her to tell me, pull the pants down, get on the potty etc. It was easier for her to just jump on it when she needed to go. We have just had our first night with no nappy!! So she will be fully trained (or is she now?) at age 3 years 1 month.

ORIGINAL: March 2007 I fought with my first for over a year. I should not have pushed him. It only served to frustrate both of us. My second is a year younger than my first. I was resigned to the thought of diapers for another year after we started thinking about training him...and he did it himself in a day or two! Both boys ended up training at the same time...Noah was 3.5, Nick was 2.5. Noah (7) still needs pull-ups at night. His bladder just cannot hold it and limiting drinks after LUNCH made no difference. So...we don't stress about it and he just wears a pull-up to bed. Haven't started truly training my 2 yo girl. I was hopeful that she would train earlier because she's a girl and have sat her on the potty regularly since she was 18 months or so. She's managed to pee once accidentally, but hasn't done it again since. Usually, she'll tell me she has to go, sits for about a minute (and it's impossible to get her to sit longer...I've tried everything), stands up, and then promptly pees on the floor. My update... Hannah will be 3 next month and is completely daytime trained. She really did it on her own too. She'll have about an accident per week, and is dry after nap too. She still fills a pullup at night, and I am not concerned about night time training at all. My almost 8 year old still pees the bed if he doesn't have a good night on. I've just accepted it.

I'm glad that this thread is back up. We are currently potty training! During the day, I decided to take away the diapers at least while dd2 and I are home alone--everyone else is at school/work. She is wearing dresses (she wanted her bottom covered) with a naked bum. She is doing pretty well, but sometimes she will tell me that she needs a diaper (so she can go pee/poop). It is a bit funny sometimes because she will wait until the very last minute to go potty. If she wears underwear, she will go in those, but if she isn't she will go on the potty. So, for now, we are doing naked bum/dresses. Also, dh doesn't really like the idea of naked bum, so I'm just doing it while he is at work... It isn't ideal, but it doesn't seem to be too detrimental. It is going to take a bit longer, but that is okay, too. I'm not worrying about nighttime training--it will come when it comes.

My boys are 4.5 and 3.5. Last week, I told them that I was not buying pull ups anymore. They have been fully trained daytime for a long time. I had been letting them wear pull-ups at night because it was so hard to get them through a night without wetting several times. Since going pull-up-less, I have been putting them to bed around the same time...anywhere from 7-8 p.m. It varies depending on how tired daddy and I are, and whether they are involved with something with daddy... Then, I get them up right before I go to bed, around 11 p.m., and let them go, put them back to bed, and they are back to sleep within minutes...or less! Anyway, the 4.5 year old goes the rest of the night without wetting himself, but the 3.5 year old gets up every morning wet...it doesn't even wake him when he wets himself... Anyway, 2 questions for you all... 1. How long will I have to keep getting the 4.5 year old up? Will he ever just wake up around that time on his own and go? I'm not exactly sure how long I keep this going, but it's working so well...I don't want to make a mistake now... 2. Should I TRY to get the 3.5 year old up again through the night, or just keep dealing with it this way until things get better? Any other night time tips are welcomed!!!
