I could do both but I have no sewing skills whatsoever, so an ergo is the way for us. An ergo is expensive too, well in AU dollars they are $145 which is kind of steep, but they have a good reputation of being sturdy and long-wearing, and it can do from newborn to older, and I can always sell it again anyway.

The Moby actually doesn't have to have any sewing involved if you use a jersey type knit, the edges just kind of roll up, thats what my SIL made hers from. It works great and she didn't sew a thing :)

what is a jersy type knit ryanne?
you would have to cut it a certain way though wouldn't you? you couldn't just have it in the shape of a rectangle that the material place would give you?

Jersey knit is what wifebeaters are made out of. They probably aren't called that down there. It's the same stuff that men's tanktops are made out of, like for wearing under a shirt. The knit should be parallel to the top and bottom like they come in a fabric store.

you mean singlets Christina? Yeah they are called "wifebeaters" here too, I hate that term, I tell hubby and his brothers off when they say that.
I know what that material is then.

I tried to get my husband to try on the wrap I bought and he told me "Men don't wear those things. I'll just carry the baby in my arms." LOL.

LOL....if you want some pics of MEN wearing them let me know...I know two very manly men around here that wouldn't mind posing for some pics with the wrap on.
Matt says he would wear Jack more if we had a meitai that was black with orange straps and orange flames on it...he is a huge harley fan...lol

Did you send it? When? No, I never received it, do you have a tracking number? I'll take a really really good look around the bushes and stuff because sometimes things get dropped in off places.

Lol, phew at least it isn't lost! I really thought I'd missed something or the neighbor kids played a trick or something.

Amber that's what my hubby says too, I don't think he would care if he saw 100 guys wearing one he still wouldn't do it. He is prepared to wear the ergo though.

I just bought THIS WRAP the other day. I tried it on and figured it out right away. It seems really comfy and nice....I hope it works ok with a baby!

I own that one Amber! I actually just bought it yesterday And I have used it so much in the last 30 hours!! I own a sling and a baby carrier and this wrap is my favorite! It is really comfy to wear and easy to put Judah in the different positions that you can do with it. I have tried all the positions except the back one.
I think you picked a good one!

That's awesome, Jessica! I'm glad to hear it. I thought it looked like the best of the options they had at Babies R us. It is really comfy to wear, and not hot at all. Of course, I haven't had a baby in it yet.

I agree, Nicole--my husband too could see a hundred different men wearing one and he still probably wouldn't want to wear it.

my hubby was converted when he had a back ache but had a toddler that was needing to be carried...and I mentioned that he could alleviate the pain by using the wrap. He fell in love with that thing!!!!! (btw....mine will wear the moby but not the meitai...lol)

Me again...

I still don't know what I want/need... I'm overwhelmed, and slightly confused about what is out there...

Can anybody outline what the options are and what they all "do"?

If I laid out *all* the options, it would overwhelm you again.

There are some basic designs that people alter/improve on to their taste:

-The sling: the basic baby holder that rests on one shoulder and goes across you diagonally. Some are adjustable with rings or zippers, some are a bit stretchy. I like mine for the newborn times.
-The wrap: long piece of cloth that you wrap around you in various ways and stick the baby in. Like that for newborns too
-Asian carriers: generall a rectangle with four straps, two that tie around your waist, and two that wrap over your shoulders, cross your back, and tie in front. Like them too. I use them for carrying older babies/toddlers on my back.
-Packs: like your basic newborn front pack, or a backpack, or something like an Ergo that can be worn either way. I've heard the Ergo is really comfy but I don't think you can nurse in it.

Course, the midwife has forbidden me from wearing my baby at all right now. So I don't get to use my lovely stash.

Thank you Maggie, that is very helpful

I think I want a sling to start with, not sure where to look for one around here though. I'll have to keep my eye out!

yolanda.....try going to a used baby store and see if they have any there...if so then you can try it on and see if it would fit you right. You can take a five pound bag of flour or sugar to put weight in it if you want. I find that I am too big up top for them to be comfortable

Heather...I PROMISE hubby will send that thing off to you tomorrow!!!! I will make him do it at his lunch break!!!!!

I watched a clip of the ergo somewhere and you can nurse with it on, not sure if that is just with the newborn insert though?

It's Canadian , and it's CHEAPER! (that's a selling feature for me )

I wonder if I should just try to make one then, instead of buying it? Did somebody here have a pattern?
