Stacy, we love you![:D]

The baby in that picture is probably at least as old as Levi. I can wear him in the Moby with his legs like that. Most newborns wouldn't be able to do that position though...they like their legs tucked up to their belly.

The Moby is shaped like a really long trapezoid, I think. LOL

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 1:31:25 PM)

stacy...it's shaped like a very long very stretched out oval with the taper ends being pretty long in the tapering
if I had mine I would take a picture for you, but I don't right now. It is sitting in a storage area in Ft Sill waiting on us to get a house to put our stuff into.

on the safety of the mei tai with a floppy or small baby though...on the picture that Stacy put a link to Jack would (and has) slid out of the hole between the baby's leg and where the tie is. To keep him in his place even now at 8 months old I have to put the tie under his butt so that the ties hold his legs in place, otherwise he slides his butt over and out the hole.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 1:38:20 PM)

Oh yeah...and we must remember that Levi is definitely not a small baby.[8|] A smaller baby, like Jessica's little guy, Judah, for instance, could go a good 6 months without being as big as Levi, aka Moose boy.[8D]

lol...how big is he now??? Jack has stopped growing...did about 6 months old or so (same as Hannah who he takes after and looks identical to). So he is still the same size he was then...about 18 lbs and I think 26 inches or so...I will have to go measure his length sometime soon to see if he grew longer any.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 1:57:41 PM)

I'm not sure of his length now, but he was 13 lb 3 oz at his appointment last Monday. He has gained almost a pound a week, so I'm guessing around 14 lb now.

My Hannah was a chub, with rolls everywhere until about 8 months, when she started walking. Now she's a skinny little thing. It looks like Levi will be the same way.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 2:03:15 PM)

jack is nowhere near ready to walk..he barely crawls. Just started crawling in the last two weeks...he is still very slow at that. He eventually makes it around but it's kind of slow gong for him. He is just a very relaxed and laid back baby...just like Hannah used to be as a baby. No one ever saw her crawl...she would be one place, you would go do something and come back and she would be somewhere else. Never would she actually crawl when people were looking...lol

ChelseaRae -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 2:40:05 PM)

I just looked at another moby wrap and I am going to make one (the ribbon suggestion was a fantastic one Sarah!!!). I found perfect fabric in our fabric store (on sale![:D]) so I figured why not? I am also going to attempt a Mei Tai, from the pictures I have seen I'm sure I can do that. There is a lady who lives in my town who makes really cute pouches so I plan on getting one of those as well. I am not a big fan of lugging car seats around so I think I will use the pouch for when I am running around rather than bring her in her car seat and the moby for when we are going to be out for longer.

For those of you who use wraps, how long did it take you to get fairly proficient at tying them?

ETA: I thought that these: http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/man-tai.shtml looked like really good directions for a Mei Tai

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 3:21:49 PM)

Chelsea, THESE are the directions I used... it had better pictures of sewing the pieces together, although it was so simple I think I could have figure it out without them.

Sarah, thanks for explaining why the Mei Tai doesn't work, I'm definitely going to make a wrap now.

it's something that you do in sewing...if you don't have a tape measure long enough that is bendable you measure with a ribbon then measure the length of the ribbon on a regular measuring tape made for measuring furniture or rooms. My mom taught me that trick.

it took me tying it twice to figure out the best way for me to do it...then it took about a week of us4e every day for me to get really fast at it. Now I can whip the moby around me and have it tied in about 45 seconds. When I take it off I leave it in the rings and just hang it somewhere so that when I need it again I don't have to retie it...just slip everything down over my head and to my waste, and put the arm ones over my arms. It usually lasts about three or four times like that before I have to actually retie it again because it starts getting bunched up.
meitai I can get tied in about 30 seconds...that one was very easy to figure out.

that is the best I have found too...I didn't follow them exactly with the one I made, but that's cause I never follow any directions exactly. I did read through them though and learned a lot on how to make the meitai and why it's made that way. It's awesome for the people that are inquisitive like me!!!!

I made mine though with the straps at the top not on the sides...it didn't feel right that way.

The first two times, I looked at the directions. Now, it's easy-peasy. I'll have to look to do any new hold, but that's it. They are much easier than they look.[:D]

i found it easier to figure it out on my own...I don't tie mine like is described in the directions. I hang side A over my shoulder (we will say L) hanging down to my knee..cross my back, around my waist, back up in the back and over my other shoulder to the front (R). Then I feed it under the waste strap, crisscross with first side that is hanging to my knee. Then longer end (not the first end) goes back around me and I tie it off on the side (L) after going around until I need to. Now with his size (and mine) it's once...used to be twice when he was really tiny. Although as much as I have lost of my baby belly lately it would still be twice sometimes. That's why I said that a small person could definitely go with something a lot shorter then they come from offline.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/2/2007 4:23:40 PM)

LOL...I'm such a visual person. I can't focus enough to follow those directions, Sarah! I need pictures![&:] Oh well, the way the book has it works for me.[:D]

sorry..you are out of luck here, I don't have any pictures of me putting it on and since I don't have it here I can't get any right now...lol

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/4/2007 8:09:14 PM)

My Mei Tai, I love the fabric!

Is a jersey knit what I need for the wrap?

yes jersey knit material
love your mei tai...I kept trying to figure out how yours only took you a little over an hour when mine took a lot longer...now I know why...mine is totally different. I will have to take a picture of it tomorrow and let you see it. The material is a little harder to sew with then what you used...but it is pretty

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/4/2007 11:24:39 PM)

I fiddled with the pattern to make it easier, Sarah. I cheated and didn't round the top off, and that cotton is a lot easier to sew then the silky stuff you used, although yours is gorgeous. How else is yours different?

mine is also padded...quilting batting lined in the pouch part and in the top part of the straps for the shoulders...makes it more comfy for me..lol. i figured if i were making it i would make it how i want it to be. i am also going to make some matching pads to velcro around the straps for more cushiony...when i wear it on my hip or side it cuts into my shoulder a bit still.
oh yeah...mine also has a stabilizing material inside so that the satin can handle the strain...so i have several layers... pouch is (from outside in and back out) satin, canvas, batting, batting, canvas, cotton material. so it took a while to sew all that. straps for the bottom are cotton and canvas lining...top straps are half cotton and canvas lining and half satin, canvas, batting...folded over and sewn together. Again, very thick.

ok...if that is too rambling I am sorry...I am tired...need to get to bed

dramagirl4God -> RE: Babywearing Thread (4/21/2007 11:04:36 AM)

ok, I have found the kind of sling I want...it's on hotslings.com

I'm wondering if anyone here has a similar one that they could sell me? I don't want to do online buying since the whole E-bay hacker fiasco I went through a year ago, and my beloved is a little unsure about 40-50 dollars for a sling.

What I like about the sling...very simple, NO RINGS! Just goes on and the baby goes in. I already have a mei-tai for later, so this is all I need.

Help?

PrudentWife -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/13/2007 1:08:23 PM)

bump for SteelMagnolia [;)]

Mrs.X -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/13/2007 1:26:06 PM)

So, I have this peice of no-sew cotton fleece that is 2 yards by 1 yard, and I'm wondering if I can make a peanut type sling with it. I can't get back to the fabric store to make the moby for another week and half.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/13/2007 1:33:26 PM)

yup...fit it around yourself the way it is best, safety pin it in place. then take it off and where you safety pinned it make an overlap of the two sides...like one over the other...and make sure it is a few inches overlap...fold everything else under or cut the huge excess off. then on the underside and the top side pin together and sew across each seam...this will make it more secure then just doing one seam. if you have any questions ask and i will draw what i mean

or you cam just tie the ends the way you feel comfortable

Mrs.X -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/14/2007 12:26:19 PM)

Thanks, Sarah! I can sew just barely, so I think I'll probably do that.

Mrs.X -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/24/2007 11:27:57 AM)

So, I got my Moby wrap yesterday, but I'm a little bummed because Jimmy is in that inbetween stage that I've read about on other forums when baby doesn't like staring at my neck, but his neck is not quite ready to face front. When he can hold his head up a little better, I think he will really like facing front. We tried the newborn hug hold, the hug hold, the cradle hold, and I think the Joey hold...It's like the hug hold but frontwards. Jimmy likes the joey hold, but if I don't hold his head, it would flop around. A really cool thing is the fabric was wide enough to give one to my neighbor, M. Her boy is 6 months, and I hear him hollering all day because he's very into mommy, but she's cooking or cleaning or something. She loves it, and so does her son, D. I'll try get a picture of us within the next couple of days. I can hardly wait until Jimmy can hold his head!

Room2Grow -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/24/2007 12:58:01 PM)

The Moby looks intimidating to me- how many of you use it/like it? I have a ring sling that I made now, and I use it for quick trips to the store and things like that, but I'm curious what people who have used both think?

PrincessDonna -> RE: Babywearing Thread (6/24/2007 1:03:44 PM)

I lovelovelovelove my Moby. It really isn't that hard once you use it a couple times. It just looks confusing. Mine came with a whole book of very clear directions, with pictures (which I needed!). The ring sling I had with Hannah put too much weight on one shoulder and I could never get it to feel right. I hold Levi in the hug hold (facing in) when I think he will probably fall asleep, and in the Joey hold (facing out) when he's wide awake.

My sister, who has no kids yet, has worn Levi in the Moby a few times and she loves it too. I told her I will buy one for her when she has a baby. [:D]

I have a picture of my little mogwai in the Moby facing forward. If I get over to my mom's, I'll try to post the picture. My computer crashes when I try to do anything with pictures and we can't find the problem.[>:]
