Thought I would share something that my little one is doing lately--she will be 3 in May. She will bring me my sling, and want me to hold her with the sling. This is usually the day after I have been gone all day -- I think she is trying to reconnect with mama. She has also started liking piggyback rides, so I am trying to figure out how to do that with the one that I have.

I got my Mei Tai on ebay for $30. You can nearly always find them for about that much there. Definitely don't buy them on that uber-expensive site!

no...I didn't make the moby's...I bought those. The site I got them for sells them for $35...it's www.attachedtobaby.com
I made Mei Tai's...well, one so far. I have to work out the quirks from this one before I make the other one. It wasn't too hard at all...but I now need to adjust the straps length...I made them extra long so that I could cut them off to the right length, but I didn't want to get done and find them to be too short.

YAY!

I made my first Mai Tai Saturday, it was sooo incredibly easy. The whole project from start to finish took me about 1.5 hours including cutting and fiddling with the size. I used a pretty apple green and slate blue striped decorator type of fabric, although it isn't super heavy it should be durable. As soon as I find my USB upload cable I'll post some pictures... The total for materials was about $7, including a piece of fabric I didn't use, so cheap compared to buying one!

Now if I only had the baby[8D]

Ryanne, you do know they can't go in MaiTei's until they have good head control, right? Are you going to make another type of carrier for earlier?

Levi spit up down my shirt and bra while he was in the Moby the other day. GROSS![:'(]

Aww donna that is gross!!

I am thinking of just getting that ergo carrier with the newborn insert, that way hubby can also carry baby around without feeling like "a girl" as he says.
has anyone used the newborn insert?

Yup, I know Donna! I think I'm going to use a maya, or a moby to begin with... although the moby seems like so much extra fabric.

Nicole, I've heard alot of good things about the Ergo, but had never looked it up until now... It looks so similar to a mai tai that I wonder if I could make an infant insert?

Micah said as long as I didn't make a pink hawaiian print carrier that he would gladly use it, it's so hard to imagine my big manly Marine wearing a baby[:D]

ETA... Micah just came in while I was looking at the Ergo carriers, and suggested gutting a CamelBak and using that[8D] Then he requested a desert digi print Mai Tai[8|]

It was only so cheap because the fabric store is going out of business[;)]

Where have you heard that Mei Tai's arn't good for infants? How is your Moby made? Just a long piece of somewhat stretchy fabric?

My Moby is reallllllly long and somewhat stretchy fabric. It's not all one width, but tapers to the ends. And...mine is purple.[:)]

ryanne...since you have some sewing experience it may be worth it for you to make your own to your body size. It is very long even for me sometimes and I am several times larger then you are. This is what I would do if I were you...get an extremely long piece of ribbon and look HERE for the directions on how to tie the moby. Wrap the ribbon around you the way it would tie, add a little to it in length, and measure the ribbon. Then you know how long to make your moby...you can always ere on the side of a little longer and shorten it if need be. All the moby is made of it two thicknesses of t-shirt type material serged together on the edges (although if you don't have a serger you could use the zig zag stitch on a regular machine). The ends of it are tapered so that it is easier to tie in a knot...again, easy to do.

ETA...dimentions of the online bought moby is about 24 inches wide, 9 yrds long

cool site stacy!!!!! that one does sound easy!!! it says to cut 5 yards of material (15 feet) and for someone small I would say that would be enough. Like I said though I think mine is 9 yrds long. Also I wouldn't cut it to 20 inches wide, I would do it at least 24...but I like to use mine in the sling position and I think 20 inches would be pushing it on the safety of that hold with a larger baby...I like that hold to nurse with. So...if I made one it would be wider.

I think I'm going to make a wrap regardless of what I decide to do with the Mei Tai, it works fine with my niece as long as we swaddle her, and the baby wearing safety link that someone had earlier on showed safe positions to wear an newborn as well... But then if I get a floppy baby I would rather be safe and just wait.

jakc is just now able to be worn in it. When I put him into anything he relaxes and leans to one side or the other. Even with the mei tai he does that even now...but he is finally big enough to not fall out. I can not imagine holding a newborn baby in one of these and it being safe....even with my kids that have had the head control and didn't lean like Jack does, I still can't imagine it being safe. I will just stick to the moby for littlest ones

Have you seen the infant inserts for the Ergo baby carrier? They are what made me wonder if it would be possible to use something like that with the Mei Tai...

But I trust you seasoned Mommies, and if you really don't think it would be safe, I'll take your word[;)]

I was thinking of getting a mamma's milk pouch and a mei tai. If I only buy those two will I be able to wear my baby from newborn to toddler?

yes...in my experience with wraps and carriers, if you have one for newborns (a wrap) and one for older (met tai) then you will cover until they can and would want to walk everywhere. I can put Emma in the Mei Tai...and she is two (of course she prefers walking..."me do myself"...lol)

Ryanne...I have looked at those before, and honestly I have used a blanket kind of like that is used, and the thing I wouldn't trust is that the baby could just slip out so easily. I even had Jack slip out of the moby wrap once...he pushed his feet out the bottom and got the part that goes around his body to go down to being around his feet instead, so he was only help by the straps running up his back and over his shoulders. He leans (like I said earlier) and luckily I caught him because he leaned to one side and slid out the side of it. It was after that that I had to stop putting his feet up in that part like you do for a newborn and I had to pull them all the way through, otherwise he would push it down like that. Very dangerous even with that...I can't imagine having a newborn or small and leaning kind of baby in a pouch without the sides covered with straps for safety or something.

Ryanne, the insert looks like a nice addition to the Ergo carrier, but I don't know if it would work for the Mei Tai. The Mei Tai isn't molded like the Ergo, so I think it would be harder to tie it just right with the insert in it. I could be wrong though, as I've never used either the Mei Tai or the Ergo.[;)] Nevermind...I just read what Sarah wrote and that makes sense, so I'll go with her.[;)]

Emily, those two should cover it nicely.[:D]

I think Levi will be big enough for a Mei Tai in a month or so. He has great head control and lots of strength in his legs and back already. I sense another early walker coming on.[&:] I put him in the Hop n' Pop (kind of like an exersaucer), and he loved it already. He's getting too big too fast.[:(]

i had better get busy on yours then!!!!! I have to go get some more material of one of them, I had to make something with the left over that I used on mine...but I do have the ties done for yours, now I just have to get the pouch done and get it sewn together. I had some trouble with mine becuase I made it very cushiony...I may have to not do that with yours because my mom's machine could barely get it through there to sew mine.

One thing I was wondering about...with the moby wrap, how does the tapering go?
So its shaped like a parallelogram / / or like a trapezoid / \
