How does that work? Do they just go in and learn/sing their new material all at once, or do they practice the material first? I've actually heard of some groups just walking into a studio, learning the material, and recording it.

That was a bit more common in the old days. Today, it's more typical to have a tracking session with sheet music placed in front of studio musicians who can sight-read. These studio musicians become studio musicians because they can see music and play it perfectly the first or second time.

After the tracking session, the group takes the tracks and practices for about a month before going in and taping the final vocals. During that month, the producer may add extra instrumentation, like an orchestra.

Thanks, Daniel.

What do you guys wanna see on their next album? A duplicate of "It's So God?" A more traditional sound? A more contemporary sound? If you could pick their next hit song which of the following styles would it be:

1. Long As I Got King Jesus (kickin' spiritual)
2. If It Takes A Valley (celtic-tinged straight SG song)
3. It's All About The Blood (power ballad)

Personally, I love all of the above songs, but I have heard that some don't like "Long As I Got King Jesus." I think I'd pick another "If It Takes A Valley." I LOVE that song, it's so powerful!! How about ya'll?

I like Long As I Got King Jesus, but a little goes a long way! I love both of your other choices!!

I like the song "The Coming of the King", it's another fast song, they featured them singing that one on the newest NQC Live vol. 6. DVD.

I like UNDER CROSS EXAMINATION-It is really a powerful song.

I don't think that they will do another project similar to It's So God

I would like to see a much more traditional sound, with song selection more like Live in NYC. That was somewhat progressive but still traditional enough for me.

If I could pick their next hit song, it would definitely be #3 from the list you chose. Stylistically, I like the power ballads and the SG quartet songs (like "We'll Say Goodbye") roughly equally.

I was cringing when you guys were guessing Brian's age since I know he and I are the same age. LOL

I've been one of Brian's biggest fans since 1982 and have every project he has ever released, including his Gold City Days. He is truly one of the most talented and sincere people I have ever met! I love each of the guys with BF&A and hope they are around for many years to come!

Any particular reason you say that? How will the next one be different?

Daniel, I'm very happy to hear you liked "Live In NYC." That was a terrific album. I have a feeling their next album will have at least a few traditional quartet songs that'll keep you happy. ...at least I'm hoping.

I think the next album should have at least one of each:

1. kickin' spiritual
2. solid SG song
3. power ballad

Wow, I'm getting excited just thinking about it!!!

There were a few songs that weren't quite to my taste, but there were more than enough good ones on there to make up for it.

This may be opening a can of worms here, but how many of you consider Brian Free to be one of the best tenors out there, and who of you don't particularly care for his style - at all? Me? I LOVE his style. I'm just wondering what the verdict is from you guys.

Note: this is the tenor singer's voice/style - not the style, song selection, or voices of the group.

Want some irony?

I lived in Douglasville in 1993-1994, long before I got into SG.
Turns out I lived SIX BLOCKS from Brian Free......sheesh

Youngartist, I agree with you 100% and am glad to see that a young person appreciates Brian's talent. I have known him for many years and admire him because (1) he is a wonderful Christian example for everyone and lives what he sings about, and (2) he has the most beautiful, natural, clear tenor voice I have heard to date.

On the way home from work tonight, I was listening to a 1990 Gold City CD -- "Windows of Home". If you want to hear Brian at his best, try to get this CD. It's great because his vocals are not overpowered by the instrumentals which I feel happens a lot lately. I am fortunate enough to have all of BFA's projects and all but two of Gold City's. Many times we don't get out the older recordings and listen to them. I'm trying to do that as I drive to and from work.

Only 17 more days until I get to see BFA in concert again! I can't wait!

Does anybody have a specific timetable when Ricky will be pulling off the road? How about a new drummer/band?

Oh, how I miss "Windows of Home"! It was one of my favorite casettes. That's one of those projects that I always meant to buy on CD and never did.

Yep, I agree that Brian Free is one of the best tenor singers of all time. I like how he doesn't try to sing notes that are just out of his range (and boy, what a range!). I also like that he doesn't sing "through his nose"...y'all know what I mean. His voice is just beautiful.

I doubt they will replace Ricky. I think he'll probably still come out occasionally with them for some big dates, just like Jordan Bennett with Legacy Five.

Also, that way there will be a position ready for him if two or three years later income slows at home and he decides to go back on the road.

Within a few months, last I heard.

I do want to thank Ricky for many wonderful years of dedictated playing with BFA, though. God bless ya, man.

I recently got BF&A's cd, It's So God, and was playing it in the car tonight. My sister who is not a southern gospel fan was actually enjoying it and asked me to play a song over again- which never happens.. I was impressed!

I just noticed that BFA were highly recognized in the SGN nominations! They were nominated for Fan Favorite Artist, Top 5 Male Group, Tradtional SG Album, Top 5 Male Vocalist, Top 5 Pacesetter, and Album of the Year. CONGRATS guys!!
