ORIGINAL: rnershigh Has anyone seen One Missed Call? I saw the previews and for some reason I want to see it. It doesn't look overly scary, probably won't even be that good either, but I still want to see it.LOL. I've heard about it--albeit as the original J-horror film helmed by Japan's bad boy of unconventional at best, disgustingly shocking at worst, filmmaker. I have to admit that I never had the interest in watching One Missed Call, given I think it's just another variation of the teen girl-oriented, horror genre, like say the Ring/Grudge franchise--and the subsequent copycats out of Korea and Hong Kong, i.e. The Wishing Stairs.* *was that Japanese or Korean? 'Can't remember...

I watched One Missed Call and did not care much for it...apparently it is supposed to parody the J horror genre, though. As a parody it does work. As horror...it doesn't.

I just thought of something, now that you mention it. Given that you said One Missed Call is more parody than solid horror, I forgot to mention to everyone here the original version was made by Takashi Miike, whom I've read dabbled in comedy numerous times before, at least wherever possible, i.e. The Happiness of The Katakuris.

i saw ( a few days ago) Tourist Trap. I can't remember who told me to watch that movie, perhaps someone in this thread or in another thread, but ...well...um...it was pretty campy. It was about 4 young people who get stuck in the middle of nowhere and a 'kindly old man' tries to help them. this kindly old man also owns the now defunct wax museum. you see where this is going don't you? yes, wax figures run amok...though not technically on their own. you see, he has a 'power' that is never explained, and he is the cause for their movement. of course, the wax figures look a whole lot like mannequins instead of wax, but eh... the opening music has a very circus-esque feel to it, so you know that it's going to be fun. I really think when they filmed it, it was probably meant to be scary, but it is just funny. I also think that it is some kind of cult classic, although I had never heard of it before I rented it. Nevertheless, i did enjoy listening to 'Davey' talk to one of his victims before covering her with wax. The best line was spoken as he coated a helpless girls face with wax. He said something like "you're so pretty..., now that i have covered your eyes and mouth, I am going to seal the last openings through which you can breath. You will not die of suffocation though, your heart will first explode from the fright. That's right, it is your heart that will beat with fear and the fright will kill you...hahahahah" sure enough, we see him seal her nose with that plaster/wax, and her chest rises as if her heart were beating it's way through to daylight, and with a final heave, she dies...and davey is delighted. i'm not sure this movie is good enough to suggest to anyone that they rent it, but if you have a bunch of friends over, and you just want to make fun of something, you might have a grand time.

I finished reading a book called World War Z a few days ago and I think it would make a great addition to the zombie apocalyptic movies out there. It's a really good book. Has anyone read the book? What do you think?

Haven't read it, but I'll look it up...... Most horror novels are four hundred page epics (King, Koontz)......anybody got suggestions on books that are two hundred pages or less? And am I the only one who thinks Dean Koontz is VASTLY overrated as a horror writer? And finally, I caught the last half of a Grade B horror flick on Scci-Fi last weekend. It was called "Mosquito", and featured some delighfully icky creature effects and an appearance by Gunnar (the original Leatherface) Hansen. Anybody else seen this little gem?

And am I the only one who thinks Dean Koontz is VASTLY overrated as a horror writer? Yes, he's highly over-rated. I don't like to classify him as "horror" writer. His earlier books did have elements of horror, but I think he's more suspense than horror. Definitely all his latest books are suspense. He doesn't have the genius to write truly good horror books (IMO of course). A "true" horror writer to me isn't afraid to test the limits of the reader's comfort level. Koontz has never approached that line and never crossed it. He's too mainstream. Writers like Brian Keene or Douglas Clegg or Richard Laymon are good examples of straight horror that I've enjoyed reading. These authors aren't as well-known outside their particular genre and fan-base, it could be because their books are so graphic and don't pull punches when it comes to describing the horror. There's one book that I can think of that's short and sweet. It's called The Attraction by Douglas Clegg. Another short book is The Conqueror Worms by Brian Keene. But I think it's around 300 pages, so I don't think it's as short as you're looking for (400 pages is short book for me). quote:

I think I may have seen it. I vaguely remember watching a movie with giant mosquitoes in it attacking people and eating them. Is that the one you're talking about?

Memo to Elastic: I loved TOURIST TRAP! Pretty slow and the violence was quite tame, but some of those scenes with the mannequins, especially the ones singing, were pretty doggone creepy! I was bored last night and watched my DVD of HOSTEL. I know this movie got blasted upon it's release, but if you look beyond the obvious, it's a pretty solid little flick, and definitely one of the most original horror ideas of the last twenty years. Even it's sequel managed for a whole new approach, showing us the sort of clientele that made up the "Elite Hunting Club" and reminding us that even our doctor or lawyer could have a psychotic side.

The best horror recently, to me, is coming from overseas...mostly in Europe, with some occasionally good Asian horror movies. I can't remember the last American horror film that I've really enjoyed. Hatchet was alright, I guess. Anyway. Everyone should check out the movie A l'interieur, aka Inside. I can't find a release date for it in the US right now...but I believe it's released sometime this month or in April. It's very gory though. Here's the plot: quote:
Sarah's husband dies in a tragic car accident, leaving her pregnant and lonely. Four months later she's one day away from her due date and an insane woman has just broken into her house and is trying to kill both her and her baby. Who is this psychotic woman and will Sarah be able to survive the night? If you like zombies, I'd recommend [Rec]. It has the shaky cam like Blair Witch, but it's very intense and funderful. And the best slasher that was focused on suspense instead of gore that I've seen recently is Fritt Vilt, aka Cold Prey. I'm pretty sure it's on DVD in the States. Watch it. Very good.

L'interieur... is that the one with Beatrice Dalle? But regarding zombie movies, have anyone heard of George A. Romero's latest, Diary of The Dead? on personal (rant) level, I'm getting awfully tired having horror film makers trying to get preachy with their politics, like Diary of The Dead's take on the Iraq War, and Hostel's simplistic take on trans-Atlanticist (read: Europe and The U.S.) squabbles, but that's just me: maybe that's what makes today's horror films--especially the gorier kind, scarier... tons of political sermonizing! But for European horror, do you recall a certain Andrj (sp?) Zulawski classic called The Possession, with Sam Neil and Isabel Adjani? I haven't seen it, most importantly the director's cut, but I thought it's an interestingly Freudian take on adultery and the J-horror sub-genre tentacle rape? Don't ask: I just know that such film genres exists...

I cant watch torture movies they really disturb me. I wont be able to go to sleep. I was looking up DC Talk music on utube and came across a video that I thought was from them. It was not, it ended up being a video showing those people getting beheaded by the terrorists. I could not hit the x fast enough. I did not see anything but still just imagining what they went though was enough to depress me for days. Now thrillers are a different story. I love them!! Darkness was really creepy.

Anyone interested in Shutter? It seems to be another weak PG-13 Japanese remake using The Grudge/The Ring as a self promotion tie-in. These type of films have phased out a few years ago.

I guess I won't have to recommend you to not watch Michael Haneke's Funny Games--both the original Austrian, and recent Hollywood remake. I'll be starting a new thread on this matter...

I saw The Ruins the other day. It was pretty faithful to the book, some gross parts I couldn't watch. Not very scary. I saw a preview for a new M. Night Shamalyan movie called The Happening. It looks like a apocalyptic horror movie, although I'm not sure what type of apocalyptic horror it will be. I'm thinking it may be zombie, only because it seems that people died because of a virus or chemical, but the preview doesn't give you any idea what kind of apocalyptic movie it will be. I want to see it because it looks interesting. I am just hoping this latest movie of his isn't as disappointing as Lady in the Water or The Village. The only movie of his I really liked was The Signs.

Night Shamalyan always either puts a great twist in, like Signs and The Sixth Sense, or some horrilble twist, like Lady in the Water or The Village.

And for additional viewing, here's another youtube link to Korea's latest military scare-fest, GP 506 (a.k.a. The Guard Post, a.k.a. Guard Post 506) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JwadiSD23M Synopsis: the titular army installation, based out on the DMZ is stricken by some virus that turns its troops into zombies. It's made by the same guy who did R-Point...
