BTW, I do not own a scale and am relying on the one at the grocery store every other week and how my clothes feel. Should I break down and buy one? I am afraid I will want to step on it every day and get discouraged. Traci

Traci, instead of spending money on a scale, I'd save it up to buy the new clothes you're going to be needing soon. Also, I think you ought to set aside some clothes money everytime you do your exercise.

I spent $300 on suits for dh's Christmas gift which he loved but thought I spent too much. I told him that I spend whatever I want on my clothes and he never complains, so he cannot complain about me spending on his clothes. He said, "when you lose the weight you want, go spend that much on yourself!" I wouldn't because I am too cheap but it's nice that he won't care when I buy a couple of "reward" outfits.

I think mine was $9 at Walmart and it's lasted me all year and seems to still be workin fine.

I don't own one, either but I am considering purchasing one since it is a good way to track weight loss. Right now, I am using the scale at the gym and I am not sure if its accurate or not.

I have a scale but I have quit using it, it seems that no matter what I do I dont lose anything, so everytime I weight I end up in tears. So my focus is going to be on eating healthy and working out, I will ignore the scale.

I'm going to try and do 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night every other day. I also have exercises I have to do for my back from my physical therapist. I'm going to have abs of steel (at least aluminum) after it's over because most of the exercises are about strengthening your abs to support your back. Anyhow, my friend sent me goodies for christmas. grrr.... They're my favorites too. But since she knows I'm trying to lose weight, she didn't send much and made sure that I would share w/ my hubby (who is not changing his eating habits as of now)

I really try and only weigh myself once a week and I know that if I don't loose any weight that week its ok. I am giving myself 30 weeks (7.5 months) to loose 30 pounds so the average is one pound a week. Some weeks I haven't lost any but the next week it will be 2 pounds. Its slow but steady,

Mind if I join you ladies? I need to lose and will be starting 'a' program after this weekend. I said 'a' because I'm not sure if I want to do it on my own or join Weight Watchers. I'm thinking on my own since I'm considering getting a pet so I'll have more of a reason to get out there and walk and the money I spend on a program could go towards buying the dog food. What do ya'll think? Anyone else out there walk their dog for exercise? I am pretty sedentary during the day because of my job and by the time I get home am flat pooped from work and the commute (1hr each way). Plus it's dark when I leave and dark when I get home and I don't feel comfortable walking alone (single gal). Plus (I've mentioned a lot of 'pluses'! LOL) I just moved here and figure it might be a way to meet other people in my complex once spring rolls around. I've done pretty well with my water intake since October...I usually get in at least 64 oz if not more. I've been doing okay with servings. It's just what I serve. Being a single person, I tend not to cook much (especially during the week) unless it's something fast like a quesadilla. For the most part, I don't eat bread unless it's a tortilla. I'd say my weakness is sweets lately. I've been craving them even when I'm not really craving them. Does that make sense??? I think I need to focus on eating more veggies and fruits. I'm trying to focus more on loving myself. I think for me, that is a key. I noticed when I was seeing someone over the summer, I wasn't as into food and ended up losing weight without trying. Guess I was happy and confident because he gave me compliments....but now those compliments are there and I'm trying to find my own worth. I dunno. I'm still working on this thought process. Oh...someone asked if there is a vitamin they can take for stress and metabolism....I recommend a super b complex. It's supposed to help with both. To the person that said they have a hard time eating yogurt...maybe you can try this? dice half a small apple (any kind you like) mix with 1/2 cup yogurt and season with 1/2 packet of splenda and sprinkle with cinnamon. The apple gives you crunch and is sweet and tangy. The yogurt gives you that creamy/comfort feeling we sometimes crave. Splenda sweetens it. Cinnamon is a mood booster and since we are overweight and usually eat because we're depressed, it can help bring us out of the depression. It really does taste good and is an easy sweet snack to whip up. Good luck everyone. I'll be checking in daily. :) Amy

My dream is to get into my 19.5-year-old wedding dress. There is a possibility I could now, but I am not sure. What I want to do is set up a weekend of relaxation locally in a motel, plan a date to a nice restaurant, send him ahead to wait for me, then walk in, wearing my wedding dress. Somehow, I want to arrange it so that someone photographs him when he sees me, then do a couple photos of us together. We have considered renewing our vows, but there are reasons I may want to wait for that. If, however, I find that we can do that, I will arrange for one of my congregation leaders to meet us there, and we will do that, too. We'll see! _____________________________ But this is not my final weight-loss goal! I want to lose about 25 or so more pounds.

Hi, My name is Heidi and I would like to try and join you all. I need to lose probably 100#'s It is really too much to think about..I have been in quite a funk lately having a hard time shaking it. I have felt so desperate and ugly that I have actually been thinking of some type of surgery. But I am honestly kinda scared of that option.. I have been overweight all my life I am 38yoa...I have lost and gained hundreds of pounds during that time...I have dissappointed myself and my family with constant failure in this area of my life...I am tired and wish I would wake up the perfect size satisfied with myself and my life.but sadly that will probably not happen. My goal is to change my habits. I need something I can live with...nothing fade been there done that.. I do have a gym membership and plan on starting again next week... I am going to have a goal of adding more raw fruits and vegetables and cut out sweets...I am diebetic and controlling it with diet ok right now...that tends to be up and down...I tend to crave sweets and salty junk food... I also really like potatoes and pasta...I will also try to cut them down... My 14yoa son also has my tendencies and we have decided to work together on our eating habits... I certainly don't want him to end up like me in 20 years... So here goes... today is a new day... Lord help us all as we strive to be healthy for you... Heidi

Ladies, I am so happy you are all here!! This is great! What a wonderful way to help eachother out. ofa23-- your plan is definitley workable. I have lost 30 lbs since April and that was just by changing my eating habits. So now I am adding in the work out to boost the metabolism and continue that weight loss. Amy-- YOU ROCK!! Loving yourself is definitley a huge help! I really liked your yoguart ideas as well. Covaan_Meshuga-- That sounds like such a lovely idea. I hope you can get it all to work out. Heidi-- I am so glad you joined us! My mother was diag with diabetes several years back, and I have all her eating habits. I am a HUGE stress eater. And I know if I don't gain a control of things now, I will be in a world of trouble later down the road ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well yesterday was an okay day. I had a good breakfast and lunch, but after a huge argument with hubby (long story) he stormed out of the house. I was not sure where he was going to, but he came back with a HUGE bag of McDonalds. It turned out okay though. I just had a sandwich and a few fries. I couldn't even drink the soda he bought me. I had just been to the gym maybe an hour earlier, and my body was craving water too much. Today is a new day, and so far it has gone well.

I should have explained that my wedding dress just looks like a nice white dress, not a wedding dress! I want it to fit loosly, so I may still have a wait. I am a little afraid to try it on, for fear the fabric might be fragile, so I want to make sure the fabric does not strain at any point. Ladies, I am surprised at how quickly clothing sizes drop! Good night, I did not expect that! Just a few pounds, and you'll have to start buying new clothes! Oh, WEEP! Unfortunately, not realizing that it would make such a difference, I had just bought some new pants -- three pair -- and I can't wear any of them! Ha, BabyDoll -- when I used to get mad at my first husband, I would go for a drive, then come back with bags of M&Ms for him -- at least your husband didn't do that!

I like Spark People...its pretty helpful. I just need some encouragement...I feel like I try and try and cant lose anything. I am stating agin fresh next week. Anybody have any tips or anything to help? I think my food may be the culprit but I cant make myself eat nothing but salads! For one I get hungry (I suspect I may be slightly hypoglycemic...undianosed). I work in an office at a desk from 9-5, then go to the gym at 5, but dont want to stay over 1 hour, because well...there is housework to be done, dinner to be made, and I'd like to see my hubby too! Can anyone help me get motivated and not discouraged?

Can anyone help me get motivated and not discouraged? Erin - at least you are now beginning to understand how your body reacts to certain foods and that's HUGE! What if instead of eating only salads, you start off with a salad and have something like a lean cuisine (the ones with lots of meat) or the South Beach meals or flip it and eat the meat first and salad last? Just to toss a little variety in there when you feel like you need it. It makes sense that our bodies get used to certain workouts and need a boost, well our bodies get bored of daily diets so why not throw in a change here and there too? I've been lurking in the How are you today forum and have noticed the conscious changes you're trying to make with pastas and sugars(natural and not)...you should be proud of your efforts!!! I'm proud of you...even though we don't know each other :) Amy

Thanks...it helps to have encouragment...I still like my sugar though...sweet tea is my fav and I cant give it up...but its gotta be better than a coke right?? I have started getting lean cusines some and eating them for our quick lunches. Dinner is my enemy...I love to cook, so I have to be careful. I have started eating a pretty big breakfast, but I feel like I really need it, I have eggs, whole wheat pita or toast, and bacon and milk for every breakfast...thats not too bad is it??

No the breakfast is fine - eta to add not sure about the bacon.. Salad is popular but it doesn't mean that is automatically healthy. There is little nutritional value in lettuce alone. There is very few fiber and calories. Then the dressings and toppings like cheese add fat and calories. Remember you can't eat too little and you can't eat too much in order to lose weight. So salad is good for getting some vegetables in but I can find other filling and healthy meals for the same amount of calories a salad would have.

I lowered the amount in my tea by cutting back a small amount at a time. When I made a 2 qt pitcher, I used to use over a cup of sugar. I cut back about 1/8 a cup at a time. I am down to a half a cup of sugar now. I can almost drink my coffee with just cream. As far as the breakfast, I am not sure if you are counting calories or what you are doing diet wise but in First Place bacon was 1 fat exchange and I could only have 3 fats for the day on a 1200 calorie diet. I only had bacon on Sunday's which I choose as my "free" day and even then I allowed myself only one.

Can anyone help me get motivated and not discouraged? Hmmmm, good question and one that took me quite a while to answer for myself. I am going to my friend's birthday party in June and spending the weekend shopping and celebrating her birthday and my weight loss (I should have lost all of the weight by then). This gives me something to look forward too. Find out what you like and reward yourself with it when you meet your goal or do something like give yourself little rewards for goals met along the way to your ultimate goal. Hope that helps!!
