Well, subgenres are tricky, but essential. For instance, there is so much difference between, say, Iron Maiden and Hatebreed that we need to differentiate. In general, subgenres are determined largely by fans and authenticated by magazines. This works most of the time. The problem comes with contraversial subgenres, such as nu-metal. To those who listen to it, they often violently affirm that it is real metal, whereas people who listen to metal from before the 90's, which they consider "true metal," violently affirm that it can't be metal at all. Same goes for, say, metalcore. Then it's largely up to debate and is often not settled until the genre is dead. For instance, few metal fans of any subgenres today would call glam metal "real metal," especially those of us from the extreme metal persuasion.
Well, there's plenty of good metal songs they could have used, but didn't. I can even say exactly why: the struggle to stay mainstream and sell a lot of games. I read an Army publication targeted at teens which reviewed the game. Though I can't quote it verbatim, there was a line that essentially said, "we wish that you didn't have to spend so much time practicing on the metal songs, which we don't like much in the first place." Truth is, the majority opinion is away from metal these days. In fact, I can think of some perfectly suitable song lists, as far as lack of profanity/adult content and a good distribution of difficulty is concerned. They could have too, I'm sure, but they didn't. As I Lay Dying would have been a much prefered choice over "Black Magic Woman" any day. Sadly, that's what the majority seems to like. The main reason why the game has metal songs at all is because they contain difficult and legendary guitar riffs and solos, and they would undoubtably lose a sizable portion of the market, those who revel in metal. They don't have the guts to even pull off a subgame based on metal. GHII: Rocks the 80's had very little as far as real good, real famous metal songs, and instead of trying again and doing better this time around, the GHIII subgame is based entirely on Aerosmith, which, correct me if I'm wrong, is arena/pop rock through and through. Not that I have anything against them-I thoughroughly enjoyed playing "Same Old Song and Dance"-it's just that I'd never buy a whole game based on them. If you ask me, they should have pulled out GHIII:The Big Four, which featured solely songs from the Big Four of thrash. Maybe we'll get lucky on GHIV.

Thanks for your highly intelligent response. Now if someone could justify calling the mainstream music of the 90s "alternative" then perhaps the universe will make some sort of sense.

Not me, I agree that they are a cut above most of their ilk. Still don't listen to them I have to give them big credit on a human level for their anti suicide song "Never Too Late". If just one person hears that and thinks twice about suicide it would be worth putting up with nu metal 24-7.

I...wasn't aware that Three Days Grace came even remotely close to nu-metal. They're alt metal, though and through. Nu-metal is stuff like Linkin Park and Korn. Alt-metal is stuff like System of a Down and Drowning Pool. In terms of lyrical themes, instrument playing styles, and general audience opinion, TDG is about as nu-metal as a chicken is a supercomputer.

Alt- metal, nu-metal. Same difference to me. LOL. Actually I missed the subject change when you referred to Korn as nu-metal then brought up Three Days Grace. I hate the genre term nu-metal because what will we call it in 5 years when it ain't so "nu" anymore? I like 2K Metal or X Metal (as in Generation X) myself but thats just me.
Actually I was lumping Three Days Grace in with all of the modern mainstream rock bands. To me they don't sound much different than whats always on the radio. But they are a little better than most best I can tell.
Point I was making is that I'll put up with bad / mediocre music if there is a very good message behind it. After all, what is it to me? I don't listen to the radio much at all anyway. Tampa's radio stations are terrible, especially 98 Rock. Too much of the same thing and whats with all the 90s stuff? If I wanted to hear Nirvana I'd buy their CDs. We all know what they sound like. New stuff please.
BTW: Opinion on Still Remains. I've been digging on them (well "The Serpant" anyway) but they may not quite be heavy enough for you.

I only listen to my (recorded) shows sometimes. Otherwise, it's the Christian talk station when I'm in the car.
I also lower my musical standards some if the message is strong. Mostly that deals with poor production anyway since most Christian bands can't afford to have someone who knows what they are doing go over their material. I believe most bands have enough talent so if they can craft a decent song, I'll play it even if it's close to demo material. Where I'm less flexible in on vocals. While production can help some, it's pretty obvious if the singer can sing or not. However, I'll also say I'm finding too many bands that are sounding so cookie cutter today that I'm being more selective.

It's not their fault that people actually liked it. If you ask me, most alt anything, especially stuff like alt metal, is very mainstream/commercial. Korn is nu/alt metal, and they sell stuff like crazy. Three Days Grace has a very mainstream, though refined and techinical to a degree, sound which happens to be enjoyable. Who'da thunk it?
