Ok, it's time for the Lizard in the Outhouse Story My dad's favorite pasttime was fishing. Each summer we would live for the weekends when Daddy would be home and we would get to go to the river. We had our favorite swimming holes -- which just happened to be good fishing holes, too . . . . sometimes we'd go for just the day, sometimes we'd pack up and spend the whole weekend. This particular Saturday morning we'd gotten the car packed -- even packing for a day for that many kids took some doing . . . so Mom & Daddy had sent us to the car while they were grabbing the last minute things out of the house. As one of the smaller ones, (I was about 5 at the time, I think) I'd be sitting on someone's lap for the ride over there. We'd just gotten all settled in the car, waiting on Mom & Daddy to get out there, and I had to go to the bathroom, aka outhouse . . . . so I jumped out of the car and took off down the hill. I was about 5 at that time. Anyway, as I opened the door of the outhouse I saw a lizard crawling on the wall. Now I really hated lizards and the like, and would not have ordinarily gone in there alone for anything after seeing one on the wall, but I REALLY had to go! . . . . so, I sat down on the potty ---- and prompty froze. Fear of that silly lizard overtook me big time -- And I started screaming!! Now, remember, I'd left all my brothers & sisters in the car waiting on Mom & Daddy. And they were headed to the river. There had to have been at least 8 or 10 of them in that car! Do you have any idea how much noise that many kids can create while anticipating a swimming trip???? In between my screams I heard the car doors closing, and was aware that Mom & Daddy had joined them in the car; and then I heard the car start. Now a greater fear took over -- the fear of being left behind!!! But try as I might, I could not get myself off that toilet! Then I heard the car start . . . they really were going to leave me!!! . . . By this time I was crying so hard I could hardly get my breath to scream Well, thank goodness, my brother, J, finally remembered that I had gone to the outhouse (plus Mom likely took a headcount ) and came running down to rescue me. He scolded me a little, as he was making me presentable and drying my tears, all the time assuring me the lizard had been plumb scared into the next county by my screams, which he'd heard clearly after he got away from the chattering kids in the car. I spent most of the way to the river sniffling and snuffling, and accusing everyone of almost forgetting me --- and being consoled & reassured by all of them . . . Poor Mom! She must have had plenty of close calls like that, though she never actually forgot & left one of her kids behind I think this incident might have contributed to my worm/snake/lizard (basically anything that's squirmy) phobia, although I still say my older brothers probably had something to do with it
