I agree with Karen. Try the Instead cups first. The key is to relax. Remember that you cannot "lose" it up there...

Don't panic, if you think you have.... just bear down until you can reach it.

If at first you don't succeed..... well you know the rest.

I called the 800 number and tried again. I think I might have it right now. When I tried this time I actually felt the thing kind of dip into place. It's still a little forward but I felt for the pelvic bone and it's sitting right next to it. I had no clue about any of this and to be honest, I'm not THAT familiar with my own body. I think this is going to work now.

faithnotbysight: It's really not that hard. After a couple of tries, I think I have it now. And I'm amazed that it doesn't even feel like a tampon. You can't really feel it at all. So, go for it & give it a try. The worst that can happen is you don't like it and you're out about $6-$7.

and...you probably aren't doing anything wrong with the tampons anyway...they are just vile contraptions. I have been married for a long time and my dh is larger than most (sorry if that is TMI) but I can only where the "slender" tampons that are made for teens because, in general, they are just that uncomfortable.

It's because they are absorbant and they expand. They dry you out and irritate the skin. These other methods don't have those problems :)

Oh and with instead, I usually insert it sitting on the potty, but to actually get it up and behind my pubic bone, it helps to adjust it when standing...

When you are seated, your whole vaginal canal becomes foreshortened so it is kind of hard to tell where stuff is in that position.

okay people, i'm doing this instead thing...

first try on putting it in, i let go of it mid-insertion and... wow - that really hurt!
but i said to myself, "self, you can do this" and so i wiped it off and tried again.

and now it's in yay! and it's been in for like... 2 minutes, and i can still sort of feel it... but it's not an unpleasant feeling, just a "oh i have a little something there" kind of feeling... and i think others have reported this, right? i did check it - pushed it back a little bit, i think i'm pretty good to go, but if not i will push it down and back, as that seems to be a thing i'm hearing a lot.

do you people realize how happy i will be if i do not have to wear a pad out in the 100 degree weather tomorrow?
the thing is, i prayed about it before i did it - it means so much to have this as another way of dealing with my flow... and praise God, i believe it's going to work out nicely

I wore one Tues. night and yesterday during work but took it out yesterday afternoon. I did a search and found that there have been 2 studies that say the cups increase the risk of endometriosis and the FDA knows about it but hasn't done anything yet. So, I don't think I'm going to wear them constantly since I already have scar tissue in there. However, I am going to talk to my gyn during my next exam to see if it will be ok for me to wear them despite the scarring.

As for the cups themselves, they are wonderful! I didn't feel it and didn't have any leaks. So I think this is just about the best thing since sliced bread.

Do you have a link? I'd like to read them.

Thanks.

I love the Instead cups, too.

Living in Central Florida, I can so EMPATHIZE!!!

I pray that it works at least as well for you, as it has for me. For me, they've been a God send.

I have very heavy flow... and periods that can last > 15 days sometimes. It is nice to know that I'm not going to have an embarrassing problem when I'm in the middle of a presentation in front of people.

I wear a "back up" pad to work....although I don't "need" it. I would just be mortified if I had a "flood" that wasn't caught. I hope that wasn't too much info.....

landabee - i know exactly what you mean about the heavy flow! Mine doesn't last that long, but it's definitely... um... flood like ;)

i don't know if i'll wear one of these again for a while - it was very difficult for me to get out - i'm just a little bit too tight down there...even with "pushing" it out... but it was definitely a nice change :)

Occassionally I have a hard time removing them as well. I just chalk it up to the fact that I've never had babies go through there (2 c-sections) and have been celibate for many years.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: most of the time it isn't hard for me to remove. The occassions that I have difficulty are still out weighed by the benefits for me.

I want to thank you all for telling about the cups. They were a honeymoon saver. LOL!! Completely out of the norm my period decided to start almost 2 weeks late and arrived 2 days before my wedding. <sigh> I was not a happy camper. I went searching the stores for Insteads because I had heard about them here. I had never used them before. They're wonderful.

On top of it being late that period was fairly light so I didn't have any leaks at all. Of course, my next period was a whopper to make up for it. The first couple days were just too much for the cup to handle so I did pads. But once it slowed down I was back to the Instead. Even if I have to wear pads for the first couple of days it is so much better than 5-7 days.

I'm likely going to need to save my honeymoon with Instead cups but I haven't been able to find them. Now I'm out of time to go looking. At least it won't hit the first week.

landabee, here's one of the links that explains about the endometriosis risk. I got it mixed up a bit. It wasn't 2 studies, but 2 groups that notified the FDA of the risks.

That's an interesting article. It didn't, however, show any connection or anything. It just said they thought that it might increase the chances in women already predisposed to it because of the backflow of endometrial tissues, which they don't even know is happening. I would definitely want more proof--a proven percentage increase, studies showing that the 'backwash' even happens (which doesn't sound plausible to me, especially since I know using the Keeper shortens my TOM--how could it be shorter if it's flowing back and forth? And why wouldn't a full tampon stop the flow and effect the same risk?), proof that backwash would indeed cause that increase, etc.
Did it even mention who the two groups were?

I did a quick search on it and found this site.

I also found this on the Mooncup's website.

quote:

Hi Su! I have recently purchased a Mooncup over the Internet after hearing about it via this webgroup on livejournal.com (www.livejournal.com/community/vaginapagina). It seems now that there has been a petition to the FDA in the USA regarding other brands of menstrual cup and their supposed links to endometriosis (here's that link too www.endocenter.org) Understandingly, there's been some concern over this, and I was wondering if you would have any comment? Thanks.
Rachel

Dear Rachel
Many thanks for the links. Unfortunately, the causes of endometriosis are unknown, and may be multiple. It has been suggested that devices which block the release of menstrual debris, such as menstrual (and perhaps tampons?) may be linked to the onset or worsening of endometriosis. Please bear in mind that at this time there is only a theoretical link between the use of menstrual cups and endometriosis, however as a safeguard I would recommend emptying your cup as often as possible.

Best Wishes
Su

I was surprised when I read that only the Keeper and the Instead cups had been approved by the FDA. But then I remembered that the Diva is made in Canada and not subject to FDA approval. duh!

The Keeper is Canadian too, and in the previous article all four cups were mentioned. I was correct, though, it seems, the link is purely theoretical, which would be why the FDA hasn't done anything--why should they?
I think I'll keep on Keepering until there's more concrete proof. And I wouldn't be surprised if the unmentioned two groups happened to be disposable menstrual product manufacturing-related.

Thanks for the link.

I think I'll stick with my cups, Instead.

I could write a commercial for them: Comfortable, peace of mind. LOL!!!

I thought the Keeper was US and the Diva is Canadian. The Keeper is at least sold US, and the diva is not (unless by individuals)

I think even if it's made in Canada, it would need to be approved by the FDA to be sold here.

When I ordered my Keeper, it came from Canada. This was, of course, before the whole Diva debacle, during which perhaps Keeper moved? I don't know. But mine most definitely came from Canada.

Right, which is why the Keeper is approved by the FDA and the Diva isn't sold in the US.
