I have a friend who drinks vinegar every morning. He has been doing this since he was a child (over 50 years) and says he he almost never sick with colds, flu, etc.. His kids (now adults) also do this. The whole family is strong, healthy, and very athletic.

He boils a gallon of water and adds a cup of pure apple cider vinegar and a cup of pure honey (the water dissolves the honey). He cools this in the refrigerator and drinks a cup every morning.

Anybody else do or recommend this?

Please correct me if the proportions are wrong, as I am a little unsure.

I've heard about people doing this, but I've never attempted it.

I have done something simular before. When I get a bad cold especially with sore throat, I boil a cup of water and add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of honey and drink it while warm. It really helps. I never have drank it cold or everyday. It makes since that it would prevent colds, because it sure makes them go away faster.

My mom drinks water with Apple Cider vinegar in it every day. It's supposed to be a really good cleanser, and I'm not sure what all else it does, but it's supposed to be pretty beneficial.

Have heard the same thing about benefits of apple cider vinegar...some even taking it straight-up, a couple of teaspoons a day. Also heard you can soak cheesecloth with it and apply to the skin to clear up skin ailments.

Vinegar can have great benefits. I haven't taken to drinking it myself, but I hear about how it does things for the body all the time from professors and such. They always get off on tangents about stuff....but I guess it doesn't matter since it's all connected. Gotta love my biology. :)

I'm isaacsmom's mom (see post #4 above).

It's not just any vinegar, either. It's raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar with the "mother" in the bottle. There are a few brands, usually available at the health food store. It's rich in potassium and enzymes that are vital down to the cellular level. According to my dr. some of the benefits are:

promotes digestion
helps reduce blood pressure
helps eliminate intestinal bugs
helps maintain proper cell hydration
helps dissolve arterial plaque
relieves kidney and bladder problems
strengthens teh heart
reduces fatigue
reduces stiffness
increases energy
helps maintain regularity
helps control appetite

Every day, I fill my insulated 64 oz. mug with water, 1/4 c. vinegar, and a little stevia.

Would honey work as well?

One thing I wanted to add: if you have something like cystitis, vinegar is a huge no-no. :) It's not that hard to figure out why, lol.

Honey would actually be better. It's just easier for me to put in a few drops of stevia. I eat a lot of honey as well--again, raw honey, not pasteurized.

At our house we've been drinking a summertime beverage of apple cider vinegar, honey and water for years. We've known it as Imitation Lemonade.

I like mine with more bite so I use more vinegar. Friend Hubby likes his with more water. We knew it was a much better than soda pop but this thread makes me think we should drink it all year round.

kerrlaw,

I'm slowly becoming a convert to the use of vinegar. I had my gall bladder removed about 15 years ago, and I've had all kinds of problems with digestion since. I started taking some cider vinegar, and it really helps.

My husband had to give up his "purple pill" for reflux when our insurance changed and it was no longer covered. That pill is $100 a month, so my husband set out to find an alternative. Cider vinegar was the answer. Eventually, he quit drinking diet sodas, and his reflux went away altogther. But months before he did that, he took cider vinegar to keep reflux from occurring.

I've heard of some people taking it in a pill. I never thought there was anything to it, though.

I had my gall bladder out about 9 years ago. I also took the purple pill but decided to stop it as I decided to get rid of any medications that I could do without.

You, monamie, and others have persuaded me. My wife and I plan to start tomorrow.

Lots of days I drink a quart of water with a tablespoon of Braggs unfiltered organic vinegar. To me it has a refreshing taste. I think it's very healthful and it seems to improve the appearance of my skin. I've read that the emulsifying effects of vinegar are good for your blood vessels.

I'm wondering if eating pickles would have similar benefits. Especially if they contain garlic and pepper. Two other foods that have noted health benefits.

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder, causing infection-like symptoms. Hadn't heard that diluted cider vinegar would irritate, though.

Congratulations, Kerrlaw. You won't regret it. I have made many changes in my diet these past several months and I feel absolutely great. I can't imagine ever giving up the vinegar and the other changes. I'm in pretty good shape for an old granny.

Most pickles are made with distilled vinegar. I do my homemades with cider vinegar and it works beautifully. Definitely check the labels.

My six year old daughter drinks vinegar about once a day and she is seldom sick. I don't know if it's just conincidence or not. I just can't get her to quit telling lies. I'm glad she is getting some benefiet out of it.

I decided not to fool with honey or water. I just get a tablespoon and take it like medicine.

Actually doesn't taste too bad. So far, so good.

I've done that in the past, and it REALLY suppressed my appetite. It kind of burned going down and took my breath away. But the taste itself isn't bad.

You won't regret doing this.

Here's what someone told me to drink twice a day:

Mix two teaspons of cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey (preferrably honey from your area) with 8 oz. of water.

The person who told me is never sick -- at least not in the 25 years I've known him.. He and his wife started taking vinegar years ago, because he was constantly getting sniffles and having sinus problems. He read a book that someone gave him called Folk Medicine by D.C. Jarvis M.D., and after he read the book, he started taking the vinegar, and his sinus problems went away, and he's never had the probelm again -- and had it for years before taking the vinegar.

BTW, I wrote about this man and his family in the "Does God Want You to Be Rich" thread. Neat people. I'm sure vinegar is not their only help.

Okay, I'm convinced too!!!

I think at lunchtime I'm heading out to get some cider vinager. We've got a health store in the area, so I might run over there to check out the unpasturized version. But I have to admit that raw and unpasturized scares me a little.

Why is unpasturized better? Would regular work similarly or no?
And what was wrong with it to make somebody start pasturizing it in the first place, lol?
