I can't even remember the last time I had to do that! And for that, I'm so very grateful

AND it just prove Spunky's and my point about cooking from scratch!

Spunky

From one scratch cooker / baker to another.

and your reasonings list is absolutely RIGHT ON!!!

Hey thanks! If these people think I'm a food snob, they ought to meet my cousin. Everything she cooks and eats is as pure and wonderful as possible - natural, organic, fresh, no artificial ingredients, gourmet, etc. She's amazing... and her food is amazing. AND she has kids, NiceGuy.

Hey, I have no problem with what you're saying, in fact, you are right, in my opinion. If I took a bit more time and applied some patience, I'd probably end up cooking more like y'all. I prefer it that way, but I usually go the quick, cheap, easy route. Days like the past couple days I've had are good reminders for me.

Hey Spunky-Gal!

Did you know that you remind me of this verse?

.
.
.

(though I'd do a Rachel )

.
.
.

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

Do you know where it is?

Blessings!

It has currants in it which I don't believe I've ever tried, so when I make it I may or may not include those. I may just substitute raisins myself.

What are currants? I'm not sure I've ever had one of those. Some sort of dried fruit?

NiceGuy

HERE is a picture and article about currants. They are very similar to grapes but I guess technically a berry. And I don't believe I've ever actually had one, which is why I would probably just use raisins in that Apple Brown Betty recipe. Also I'm not sure where I would find currants. I don't think they are popular around here. Although I'm sure I could find some at Trader Joe's. And yes, I have only heard of them eaten dried.

And as for Hamburger Helper I have no qualms with fixing that or anything else. While from-scratch cooking is better, healthier, etc. when I don't have time I really don't have any interest in experimentation with a new scratch recipe. Basically I do what I can, you know?

Actually my recent reply inspired my new question:

Do you have a Trader Joe's out near you Spunky? And if not have you ever been to one in your travels?

"Scratch" recipes are pretty much all I know, so it would take MORE time for me to buy specially packaged things and figure out how to prepare them!

To answer your other question... I've never shopped at Trader Joe's. My favorite grocery store is a locally owned and operated grocery store, and I love knowing that some of the things I buy there are also grown and produced locally. I like buying things from the bulk food section, rather than paying an arm and a leg for fancy packaging.

I was mostly just trying to ruffle your feathers. I prefer scratch-made food, too, and agree with you on all but one point in your list. Scratch made food doesn't always taste infinitely better than stuff from a box/mix/can. Sometimes the difference is negligible.

Interesting. They look like the berries from some of the trees in my neighborhood.

I'm still trying to ruffle your feathers. But I'm also serious. Yes, it's rare (that the difference is negligible) but it happens.

Actually he has a point. If one is not a particularly fantastic cook, then at times box /mix/can stuff may actually taste as good or better than from scratch as would frozen dinners.

Case in point...my grandmother. Um, on a good day she's an adequate cook. I love her dearly but...um...a cook, she is not.

I, however, inherited cooking genes from the other side of the family. Although I do have time constraints, and scratch cooking requires a great deal more planning time than I have most of the time. So usually it then becomes frozen foods and/or takeout.

Oh, and I asked you about TJ's out of curiosity. It's better price-wise than say Whole Foods market, has lots of stuff that's organic but is cheaper than most regular grocers. Anyway, very cool though that you have a local grocer that's cool like that. :)

Tonight was takeout. But it was from the most awesome gyro place called the "Falafel Palace." At some point I must try their hummus. But anyway, their lamb gyros are heaven.

Ick. Not a big fan of the spinning meat. Do you pronounce it jie-roh, or yee-roh?

*LOL* I don't eat lamb on a gyroscope.

Are you saying you don't like lamb at all?

And I say...yee-roh

Which made me think of this the whole way....

*Insert opening rock beat*

I need a yee-roh....
I'm holding out for a yee-roh 'til the end of the night....
