You know a bit more about dogs than I do, Deb, so if we ever get one we will go with your judgment.

Yes, Deb, maybe we should get a Beta fish now that the weather is mild enough to have it transported without the water turning to ice. (We almost did get a beta fish from the pet store in our town center but by the time we decided to get it the store closed.) Deb also knows more about beta fish than I do...cuz she had one back in California. Like she knows that you always get one fish not two because they will fight with one another if you get more than one. In fact if you put a mirror near a beta fish it will try to fight with its reflection! Yup, let's look into getting a beta fish, honey.

ORIGINAL: bride48 Awwwww! Maybe a Beta fish? Reading this I'm sitting here imagining what sort of fish would have its programming beta tested. Maybe it was designed in a school. Yes I know what Beta's are . I've often wondered however, out in the wild where Betas have to fight for their territory, would the strongest male be the Beta Alpha, or the Alpha Beta? I love having a dog. Yes, they can be expensive, but if you have it they're well worth the effort. Our Rosie is half dalmatian and half chowchow (imagine the dalmatian but all one color, dark grey) Beth and I however realize that we should have selected something a little smaller. Something in the maltese size range (though mixed). As it is, we keep Rosie outside all year round (on the one occasion I tried to bring her inside because of the subzero temps, she bolted the first time she got a chance). Having an outside dog has some advantages and disadvantages. People tend to shy away from walking through our sideyard (very close to her pen) and we always know when a train is coming! Rosie howls like the dickens well before we can even hear one coming. She's very strong though. I've replaced 3 tie-out chains, I've lost count of collars. My biggest expenses are keeping her secured per city ordinance. Not that she ever GOES anywhere when she gets off her chain. Its not uncommon for me to pull up after work and find Rosie sitting at the end of the driveway looking like, "What took you so long??" As my Mom would say, the dog's as happy as an idiot...

We're getting a Beta Fish! Yay Deb! We had a Beta for several years. They're very pretty, and seem to live a good, long time. We had ours for 3 years before Bo, our cat, took it out to play. We came home and found the poor little thing on the counter. Since you don't have a cat, you won't have to worry about that. Queenie is half Australian Shepherd, half blue heeler. We were warned that her temperament might change as she aged, but she's 8 years old and still loves everybody. Kids are her favorite. Unfortunately, she likes to bolt too. She comes inside in the basement for part of each day, but she's always plotting an escape to go play in the woods. On the positive side, she will growl like a wolf if any creature or person comes to our back door at night. I wish she could have the run of the house, but she's way too curious and energetic. I must have picked up some kind of bug at work this weekend. I woke up nauseous this morning and now I ache all over. It feels like someone has beaten me and now is sticking pins into me. Plus I've been chilling off and on. I managed to drive Joe to his driving lesson at school, and get the major subjects covered, but I've had to sleep a lot in between doing things. How are the interviews going?

I love my furry baby. He's a 6 year old spoodle (spaniel/poodle cross). He's just love wrapped up in wool.

Sue, sorry you were ill yesterday. My throat's scratchy today, so I hope I'm not getting John's cold. At least I finally slept last night...8 1/2 hours. But I'm still tired from all those nights I didn't sleep! The bags under my eyes are big enough to carry home a week's worth of groceries!

Hi, Deb, I have a dog phobia. Cats are more my thing. I won't visit pet displays either, for the same reason. I can't afford vet bills either. I let my boys adopt a stray, but they haven't used the vet, except when we first got him. It seems like I stay well from colds, etc. for a few years after I get pneumonia. Then, I guess my immune system gets lazy again. If I've had colds since September, they've been so mild that I haven't been able to tell the difference between them and my usual chronic congestion.

We got our letter from the base so now we can write to Jake. No new word yet on his knee.

Marsha, you aren't a dog lover? I'm surprised. Not meaning to critcize, though. I just find dogs to be more affectionate, and I like receiving affection. Guess that's why I'm so happy in my marriage, huh? He's so affectionate! We had a good interview today, so I'm hopeful. We will probably have her try helping on Saturday.

Once I played a game. I needed to say what my favorite animal was, and list three quailitiies I liked about it. I said the ostrich, because it's cute, flirtatious and feminine. Next, I had to say my next favorite, again listing three qualities. I said a puppy, because it's cuddly, affectionate and loyal. The first animal respresented how I saw myself. The second represented what I wanted in a spouse. Actually, I had a pretty long list of what I wanted in a husband. John measured up almost exactly, only he's even better than my list!

I've just been researching Betta fish. Apparently, everything my niece was told and did with Shaq was all wrong, so now I'm not sure caring for it will be all that easy. I'm too tired to post in detail about what she did vs. what I just read, but I'm realizing that I'd better really study up before we do this thing!

Ours did fine as long as we kept it in a small bowl and didn't overfeed it. It was one of the easiest pets we've ever had. I can't remember how often the water needed to be changed though. That might be a problem if none of your friends or assistants want to help you do it.

John used to have a tank full of fish. They started dying on him and in the end, I think he just needed a break from the whole thing. Maybe some time in the future he'll get his fish tank back and working.

My niece had the vase with the peace lily, and fed it vitamin suppliments. But all the articles yesterday said they need to be kept in 75 to 80 degree water, and to be fed things like small instects...flakes made of insects or snails. Betta fish are carnivores, not vegetarians. Also, they're surface breaters, so you really don't want that peace lily blocking their air supply. Looks like some robins are rebuilding the nest in the tree outside our living room window! I hope no crows get the babies this year. Remember how crushed I was last year? But I'm excited and hopeful. They're rebuilding the nest even as I type this post, with the bird settling down into it to make sure everything's nice and comfy! I'm delighted!

We fed ours flakes that were called blood something. I've seen the vases with the plants and the Betas and wondered how they worked.
