We refill some of our cartridges for work, but some of them can't be refilled and some (like my Epson at home) wouldn't be worth it because the cartridges are pretty inexpensive as it is.

As you can see by my avatar, the scanner works! Just in time to make Mother's Day cards, praise the Lord! All day yesterday, I was cudgeling my brain for ideas, but now I can scan photos of us as children and make really neat cards for both our moms. I'd better get my moms card made and her present wrapped soon, since it has to be mailed to California.

OK, I started getting very down about 1 PM. I couldn't figure out what had triggered it until I realized that Jake had left one week ago today. Most of the time I'm fine.

How about you? Do you have a new ad coming out this week?

Thanks. Advertizing gets really expensive, ya know? This has gone on for six months now, so it's getting old. But God's doing something, so we'll just trust Him.

When we scan the photo of me when I was just a little tyke Deb will use it to make a new avatar for me to use here for a while. The photo was taken by my grandmother and a few years ago my cousin found it among her things and framed it to give to Deb and me for Christmas.

I keep that photo on my desk...it's adorable! He was 3 at the time; it was well before he got Polio.

Me? Full of mischief?

Well, I guess there was that time I tried to walk a tight rope after my foolish parents had taken me to the circus. Of course tight ropes are hard to find around the house or yard so instead I used the railing of the steps to the porch.

Yup...I guess the hit on the head when I fell off the railing could help explain some of my goofiness.

What's that you say? What about the goofiness of trying to walk the "tightrope" of that railing before I fell off it?

OK, ya got me. I always have been goofy...and mischievious.

Ok, we got a letter today. He didn't have much to say, but at least we got something. I did find out that he can get a replacement driver's license once he has a base address. Joe and I are headed out to see how much we can get for Jake's college books. I know resale values aren't good, but I bought them used online, so we're going to see if it will be better to try to sell them online too, or if we can just sell them here.

I love my new avatar.

Did I mention that Deb made it for me?

My Mom's mom took the picture. Photography was her hobby and she developed her own pictures. It's great that now all these years later we can share some of her work with others on the Internet.

Thanks, Deb, for making this neat new avatar for me.

I'm glad you got that brief letter. Even a little letter can be refreshing...a whole lot better than not hearing from a loved one at all.

As for selling the old college books, that is a great idea. I hope you can get a fair amount for them, but something is better than nothing. Deb and I need to do a little more of that ourselves. If using a 10 cent coupon at the grocery store is worth while, why not get some extra cash by selling stuff that is no longer needed.

Oh...turning in loose change is worth while, too. I rolled up $10.50 worth of dimes and pennies today which plan to drop off at the bank tomorrow.

Glad Jake at least wrote to you, Sue. You must feel relieved, huh? Do you know how often he'll be able to write?

Also, Sue, whenever it is OK to do so, you might want to write to him from time to time. And even send a package with stuff he enjoys and might be able to share with his guys. Most guys in the service like getting mail.

I'm convinced Polio saved his life.

How so?

The avatars are great.

It was reassuring to hear from Jake. We can't write him until he gets assigned to a unit, or battalion, or whatever it's called. He knows that though, and even mentioned that in his letter. I'm writing things down now that I'll put in a letter when I can send it. We can't send anything but letters, or newspaper/magazine articles while he's in basic. My mom was really upset about that because she wants to send him cookies.

I was able to sell some of the books. Unfortunately, the most expensive ones were already out of date. They make new ones at least once a year and the old ones become worthless. Quite a racket, huh?! But, like John said, something is better than nothing. I kept two of them, a health book and a computer book, because they would only give me a couple of bucks for them. I think we can get at least that much use out of them in our homeschool.

John was always playing "tightrope," climbing trees and impressing his little girlfriends with big kitchen knives. So I joke that if he hadn't contracted Polio, he surely would have killed himself performing either his exploits or his scientific "experiments."

Sorry you can't send Jake "care packages" right now. Guess they don't want him to have any distractions during training. That makes sense. Not fun for the family, though...

It's been a while since I was in basic, but I do remember the rules about sending care packages. Sending letters is not discouraged (or was not when I was in basic), but care packages were seriously discouraged. I wish I could give you an item by item list on why, but the only reason I can understand is that these young people are just now learning how to be soldiers. That is a LOT to put on someone. To add the temptation of cookies (when the drill sergeants strongly discourage that) is not a good idea. Jake needs (as I needed) to focus entirely on his growth as a soldier. Rest assured, once he's in a permanent unit, you'll have plenty of chances to send him cookies.

In the meantime, you could always ADOPT A SOLDIER<<link.
The site's main purpose is to connect supportive Americans with deployed soldiers.
