WOW Deb, I am sorry to hear about Carolyn, however I am glad that you have nice memories of her though.

There used to be an Amusement Park at Nantasket Beach. The last time that I was even at the Beach itself was back in the late 80's I think, maybe more early 90's. Yes it is a nice beach albiet with higher waves and polluted water to boot! On the pictures, I will bookmark your post as I am gonna be heading out shortly, at least I hope to do that anyway.

I just wanted to let you know that I said a prayer about the attendant situation and hoping that it finally all works out real soon as well!

I, too am praying. I feel the reason it's so difficult to find and keep quality aides both in nursing homes and in in-home care is because, at least in Ohio, they are not paid well. Only fast-food employees are paid less. I suppose that's why my expectations are low. As you know, I have had several (5-6) that even I haven't tolerated.
I read Joni's book,. When God Weeps several years ago. A small part of it opened my eyes how much worse my life would be if I happened to be born in some parts of Africa-for example-it's survival of the fittest.
Disabled people were happy to have a cardboard box to live in there.
We take government benefits so for granted, when we have no power. We are at their mercy. I don't know why we have it so good, actually when others suffer so.

Attendants in Massachussetts get $10.84 an hour. Not wonderful, but not too bad. Favored Attendant takes care of a baby 7 hours a day, five days a week for $150 a week. She figures that works out to $3 an hour.

But I agree that disabled people in Third World countries have it much worse than we do.

It's not bad pay if your young or if it's a second income. Independent aide need 33% to go to Soc. Sec. tax.

If they're paid as independents, they still have to provide their own health insurance too, don't they?

In Massachusetts, MassHealth pays the money, Cerebral Palsy of Massachussetts issues the checks, but I am the employer. I recriut the attendants, hire and fire, set the schedule/duties, and manage time sheets. Our state has few, if any, regulations, giving me pretty much the authority over how the job is carried out. I like it that way.

The PCAs here just got a union, which will supposedly get them wage increases and benefits. I'm not sure how the state will come up with the money, though...

That should improve the quality of PCAs there,...maybe.

I have a Medicaid waiver. UCP isn't involved at all..

Deb - There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting good aids who will do things as you want them done. That's why you pay them. To care for your needs - not to do what they want when they want to do it.

And I don't even want to think about government run healthcare. It sends serious shivers up and down my spine...

Cerebral Palsy of Massachussestts is strictly the fiscal intermediary, meaning all they do is issue the checks and handle the taxes. MassHealth, our version of Medicaid, actually pays out the money. Boston Center for Independent Living evaluates us periodicall so they can determine how many hours we need, and MassHealth approves (usually) their recommendations.

Mine too, which is why I'm so concerned about the November election. Well, that and the withdrawal from Iraq, which would send Al Qaida a very dangerous invitation.

I really liked Fred Thompson, but he ran a lousy campaign...

Is there ANYBODY out there worth voting for? Geez, right now, H and B are both in my home state making noise. Wonderful, at least they'll be gone again after the primary on Tuesday.

I for one will be voting against candidates rather than voting for candidates for the President this election I fear...

McCain, because he is the least of 3 evils. Now, I was actually leaning towards Obama. That was until his nice little thing came out with his pastor recently.

And none of them is really pro-life, which is the issue I care most about! But at least McCain won't pull out of Iraq prematurely, nor will he plummet us into socialism.

Since we got married, we've wanted a scanner, but just couldn't afford it.

This afternoon, I expressed concern about John's copier, which is getting old. But again, a new copier just wasn't in the budget.

But 20 minutes ago, our neighbor offered us a copier/scanner for $30! Her husband just bought it, but then found one he liked better. He thought John might like the first.

I'm thrilled!

That's great, Deb. My copier scanner is a homeschool necessity as I'm concerned. Unfortunately, this one is a bad ink eater. The last black cartridge only lasted less than a month. We did a fair amount of printing this month because of taxes, but still.

Time to get up for supper and then take a look at the copier/fax machine that our neighbor from downstairs is selling us for $30.

The old copier uses the large toner cartridges which lasted a long time. The new one uses the type of ink ject cartridges used by most printers nowadays. If those are refilled at the local pharmacy the cost is considerably better than if bought new.

Do you have your ink cartridges refilled?

OK, gotta go zap supper in the microwave.

I've never tried having mine refilled. I bought refilled cartridges for my previous printer, and one bad cartridge leaked all over and ruined it. I've since talked to other people who've had the same experience. It may be different if you refill your own cartridges.

This printer is about a year old. When the cartridges I just purchased run out, I may try refilling them. I've saved all the old cartridges, so I could come up with a system where I would toss a cartridge after it had been refilled a couple of times. The problems may have been caused by cartridges that were reused too many times. I just stocked up on ink today, and it cost me as much as it did to buy the printer in the first place.

Merv is a big fan of laser printers. He wanted me to get one this time, but color lasers were too expensive and Joe and I need color.
