Many here know me. I'm the lady in the wheelchair who got married at age 48. I'm wondering who will show up to chat with me.

By the way, I hate being called Debbie. Either DebbieLynne or Deb is fine.

Hi, Deb!! I remember reading your story...somewhere on forums! I remember meeting a couple in their 70s. The man was widowed and it was the first marriage for the woman. They were blissfully happy. To re-echo Darcy's words, come visit the other threads here, too, so we can get to know you better and you can meet yet others!

The following is from my MSN Space blog:

When I was little, my physical therapist monitored my progress each year by taking black and white home movies of me. It always rather shocked me to see that gangly, jerky creature on the screen (a body distorted with Cerebral Palsy) and hear the therapist coo, "There's Debbie!" I saw myself as a princess, not as a female Quasimodo.

Growing up, I wanted to be called "Deborah" or "Deb." When I wrote short stories outside of school, I'd sport the by-line, "D. Lynn Simmons." My middle name seemed so much prettier to me than my first name. As I approached high school, I didn't make a big fuss when people called me "Debbie," but I'd try to steer them towards calling me "Deb."

During my senior year of college, I hit on the idea of being called "DebbieLynne." It seemed to come out of the ante-bellum South, carrying images of pastel hoop-skirt dressess, lacy parisols, soft Georgia accents and the heavy perfume of Magnolia trees on a summer evening. In other words, I felt pretty when I thought of myself as "DebbieLynne." And ugly when I thought of myself as "Debbie."

Just a few years ago, I realized that, deep down, I connected the name "Debbie" with the home movies that my therapist shot. And while I can't deny that Cerebral Palsy does make my body difficult to look at (although my husband thinks otherwise), I know that Jesus has made me one of His princesses. In Him, I am lovely, and using "DebbieLynne" reminds me of my loveliness. My new last name, which my husband gave me on our wedding day, deepens my feelings of bing beautiful and cherished.

My name is DebbieLynne.

Debbie, I'm glad you think of yourself as a princess, because that's exactly what you are!

Hi, Deb. Neat to see you here. There's some wonderful people who post here. My carpul tunnel discourages me from spending as much time here as I'd like. I do much of my communication by e-mail, from teachers conferences to seheduling bus rides, so that eats my good-hand-time up on many days.
I look forward to knowing you better here at CW. I was wondering how you met your husband? Does he have CP also? What's a typical day like for the two of you?

DebbieLynne, pleased to see you in your own place! Welcome to PFY and the exciting things that go on in here. Exciting in the sense that there is much laughter, some tears, and prayer any time it is asked for!

Some of these people are certifiable. As what I don't know because I love them so much.

Looking forward to getting to know you better.

That is beautiful, Deb! Thank you for blessing us with this thread. My sister-in-law has MS, and her husband takes care of her and the kids joyfully -- true agape!

Welcome to PFY!!!

Hubby and I met online in a chat room for disabled singles while I still lived in California. He'd actually read a post I'd written on a message board about dating and disability, on which I took a stand against premarital sex. From that, he figured I must be a Christian. We chatted for three years, being accountable to my pastor, and I visited him each summer. I returned from my third visit with a ring. 14 months later, I moved here (Greater Boston Area), and we got married.

Hubby had Polio when he was six. He has use of his hands, but he's in a power wheelchair and uses ventilators all night and several hours during the day. Still, we drive all around town, and take excursions into Boston and such.

Like Marsha, sometimes typing is limited for me. I type with a headstick...very slow. I try to email various women in my church, since my speech defect makes telephone conversations difficult, so that's supposed to be a priority over Crosswalk. I also do personal Bible study on my computer. Also, I draw with Paint Shop Pro--I'm aiming at starting a greeting card business. Y'all can see my art by clicking the link under my signiture.

Anyway, if my posts seem abrupt, it's because typing takes me awhile. This post took 20 minutes.

I'll check out your art later, Deb. Don used to be pretty much able-bodied. His mental illness was his big barrier. He did the cooking and the driving, until five years ago when his arthritis and vascular disease took a turn for the worse. We've had some big adjustments, but as you know, our God is bigger than anything life throws at us.

I type with the pinky on my right hand, so I do know s-l--o-w.

God bless you and your groom with many happy times together

Last Monday evening we went to our town's Night Before the Fourth Parade, and got seats right next to the Grandstand. The only "negative" thing was that someone tied Brian Joyce balloons to our wheelchairs..ick! Brian Joyce is our state senator, who wrote a letter to me saying the people of Massachusetts can't be trusted to vote on same-sex marriage. I hated having his balloon on my wheelchair. Again I say, ick!

But otherwise, the parade was really fun. My husband's friends are in a bagpipe band that marches every year. In kilts...yes. They're Christians, so they always play "Amazing Grace." Afterwards, we wheeled back to a street near our apartment building and watched the fireworks. I thought they were spectacular, especially considering the town's financial situation.

I finally finished studying Joshua inductively; now I'm going over it again using commentaries and Bible encyclopedias. I didn't like inductive study...too subjective! Scholars have given us so many wonderful Bible study tools, which are so accessible to disabled people through computers and the Internet, that it seems wasteful not to use the! The Lord has blessed us so much with the ability to see what these men have learned from careful study of God's Word.

Well, that's all for now. I'm almost finished with a digital painting of a little girl on my husband's side of the family...I'll make it my avitar soon.

Wish I went with the Lord more faithfully, HisJoy. I try. He really is faithful, even when I'm not.

Hey Phos. I perused your PFY thread the other day, and thought you should know that hubby and I hold conversations with our stuffed animals...our puppies. Their names are Puppy Love, Terry-Dog, Sam, Bargain, Katie and Sootie.

There goes my credibility in the Theology Folder, huh?

Mine too! Oh well! If you can't have fun and be a little eccentric to boot, what's the fun in life!

Did I mention I reported hubby to Animal Control because I found his belt across Puppy Love's back?
