Which one? He hit about a dozen or so while he was trying to find where he wanted to land! LOL
Call it a personal preference. I see no point in a tenor singer trying to hit every note in his upper range while putting an ending on a song. In fact, I suspect if you heard a tenor in a local group do that, you'd probably think that someone needs to take him aside and teach him something about harmony and quality. But, because, it's GC, it's cool.
In my opinion, either it's good music or it's not. It doesn't matter who's doing it. And I don't consider "screaming tenors" to be good music.

In response to Mr. Rush's comment about my attitude on pitch being what is wrong with SG fans, I said I thought Jay was on pitch. SG music is not the opera. It is a spirited celebration of the joy of Christ in song. I have sung harmony for a long time and feel I probably know as much about pitch as most other concert goers. Bad singing is bad singing, but going for a "stretch-note" and not quite hitting it is different. Bass singers do it a lot. This is supposed to be about Gold City and Jay is no longer with them. I have been and still am one of their fans, and I will always be a fan of Jay's singing, whether he is still on the road or not.

I've been reading the posts regarding Gold City and I'll have to say they're interesting. However, I will jump out and say that I just spent five days with those guys on the road this past weekend and I don't think they're losing any steam. I honestly sense some excitement on their bus and after the horrible start of the year with the passing of Doug Riley, they're due for a smooth run. I'm beginning to see some of that "magic" come back around into their presentations and I think it's just a matter of time before they return to their normal stride. I think fans are going to be very happy in the long run.
Aaron McCune did a fine job this weekend and I think he's gearing up for a long, healthy stay with Gold City. Southern Gospel music has got some great quartets, and Gold City is certainly in that cast.

I LOVE that particular part of the song that is being diced in pieces. I could listen to it over and over.
What about a LIVE GOLD CITY REUNION CD! Start from the beginning!

Dear Mr Rush,
I forget which thread I was on but I mentioned the "When He Calls..." song you referenced and I said "The off pitch note Jay goes for doesn't do much for me" or something to that affect and I got ripped!!! I agree with you that it is not good singing nor is it on pitch and I also agree that the encore is worse BUT I do love SG and the high tenor scream, and it is a scream, and the low bass slide growl, and it usually is a growl, are part of what makes it fun for me. I prefer on pitch good singing as a whole but on a fun, 3 chords and a cloud of dust, I EXPECT the tenor to go high and the bass low. 99% of the time, the closer they come to the note the better the quartet is. The sad part to me is that most of the young quartets of today are imitating the quartets of old yet they have left the quality issue out. Rosie or Bill Shaw, PAtt Hoffmaster Bobby Clark etc would go for a high ending but they always knew where their limits were. They sang the highest note they could that still had musical quality. Most of our young tenors only focus on going high, they omit the limit part. Same for bass singers.....I have said it before and will say it again, when a simnger switches their tone, whether low or high and sound like two different people then they are no longer singing, they are either screaming or growling.....I guess in a nutshell I am divided, I prefer good singing but still love the effect.....

Gold City is the best and has been my favorite since somebody gave me the 1982 Live cassette. One of my most favorite memories of them was when they first started singing Midnight Cry.Tim felt lead to sing that song but apparently they had just started practicing it and Ivan wasn't sure of the words so Brian stood behind him and mouthed the words of the verses in his ear as he sang. I still think that was the most moving rendition of that song I have ever heard. I want to be a "Screaming Tenor" when I grow up unfortunately my granddaughter thinks I'm grown up now,lol.

I just heard Gold City last night in a packed-out church and had a great time! I had commented earlier that I would post a few comments on the 'new' Gold City with Aaron McCune. Here are a few thoughts:
-Jon Wilburn is starting to do about 1/2 of the MC work as well as cracking some really funny jokes about the other guys (he loves to give Aaron a rough time about being Cherokee )
-Aaron McCune's style of singing needs some of Bill Lawrence's stage presence, IMHO. (If he smiled a little more and looked more enthused about it, it'd help him alot)
-While I'm not trying to be overly critical, I couldn't help but notice that the stacked bass vocals on certain choruses would hit the a low note before Aaron even had the mic to his mouth! Don't get me wrong, he can definitely sing bass but I guess he's still pretty new. )
-I thought it was really neat that Gold City sang a song with just Josh at the piano, and the four men singing - no stacks/no tracks. They sounded WONDERFUL!! I was highly impressed )
-Josh Simpson did his usual "How Majestic Is Thy Name," piano solo - and did a great job! Josh is quickly becoming one of my favorite piano players.
-Steve Ladd did better than I think I've ever seen him sing! He hit some notes I've never heard him hit before - (ie Jay Parrack's highest note on "When He Calls")
-During the last song, Jon and Steve went into the audience and shook people's hands, and Steve got to hit his high note in the middle of the church!
-Interestingly, Danny and Jon had ties on, but the other 3 just wore suits and nice shirts. I kinda liked the look, but I wouldn't advice them to totally scrap the ties.
-The guys sang some old songs like "When I get carried away," but they also sang some new songs like "It's Just Another Red Sea." It was a nice mixture of old and new.
Overall, the concert was fantastic! Sure, the Gold City with a full band and (Jay/Jon/Mark/Tim) will always be the best, IMO, this new Gold City will not let them disappear by any means. In fact, as long as Jonathan Wilburn doesn't decide to leave anytime soon (I'm scared to death - he's already been there 10 years), GC will remain GC!

I saw Gold City about a month ago, and I agree with your review. They were great that night! They did a lot of older GC songs, but also mixed in some new ones.
I also would like to see Aaron McCune show a bit more emotion. I really enjoyed his singing that night, but he seemed bored with all of the jokes and the stories. He had just joined them at that time, so I wouldn't think he would already be tired of hearing them. I'm sure he will get more involved as he gets more comfortable with the guys and the program that they use.
IMO, if they can keep this group of guys together, they will be back at the top of SG in the next few years.

I heard them sing this song Aug.4. It's definitely a power ballad, I'd say it has more of a feel of "It's Still the Cross", but this song is even better than that. It's guaranteed to bring everyone to their feet at the end. Danny has the lead on the song if I remember right. It didn't hit me how great a song this was going to be until they kicked in the final chorus, after hearing a bone-chilling exerpt of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" added in. If this song doesn't go to #1, it will be the biggest upset since USA beat Russia in hockey in the 1980 Olympics. Everyone KNEW the Russians would beat us. And I think everyone that has heard this song KNOWS (or believes) it should go to #1.
