Yeah, I have a great deal of trouble promoting myself. I don't know what my timeline is because I thought it would be ready for market last November and now it's nearly June. I have no idea how much longer everything is going to take. But I'm thinking that launching a book in the summer when everyone is at the lake or on holidays isn't good timing and September is super busy for most people so I don't know. I'll have to discuss this with the publisher.
I know a couple of things I will do for marketing. I'll put together some sort of letter or something and send it to everyone I know--and maybe dh's contacts too, if he's willing. I'm supposed to be getting some promotional things so I'll probably include a bookmark or something with the letter. That will be a start. I want to have some sort of launching event but I haven't a clue of where and how. Once I know that, then I can send out press releases. There are particular ministries and other key places that I want to promote my book to so I'll be sending out something to them as well. I need to have a website and not just my blog and the book I was reading advises using a professional to create it so I have to figure out what I want with that. And then there are the gazillion ways to generate traffic towards that site. Okay. I'm tired now.
Catherine, if you find a way to have a self-cleaning house, I want to know! I hope you have a wonderful time in Florida.

Thanks for the offer, Christine. Ds1 does websites for businesses in the city (as a side job) so I've asked him to do it for me once he's back from Europe. He told me to find websites I like the look of. I guess I can do that. I used to have a website I created myself (I recently just took it down) so I could use what I had as a template for this new one until ds is home.
The sorts of book launches I've been to have been held the large, local bookstore--sometimes in an area cleared of bookshelves or in their little restaurant. The author gets up, tells a bit about the book, reads a selection and then fields questions before sitting down to sign (and sell) books. I was at a launch for a children's book years ago and the author held it in the Children's Museum after museum hours.
The thing is, I'm not sure if the bookstore I mentioned would want to touch my book since the title clearly indicates what its about. There is a wonderful Christian bookstore downtown but I don't know if they ever do book launches. Guess I'll have to ask but I don't even know yet WHAT to ask.
And yeah, I like the idea of speaking at churches or other Christian events--telling a bit about my story--and selling the books at a back table. On their own, the publishers, the back contact page of the book said that I'm available for speaking engagements and special appearances. I told them to change it because it felt too bold. I haven't done something like this. Can I do it? I'd like to. Do I need to have something like that in the book if I want those sorts of invitations? I haven't a clue but I am rethinking that and may tell the publisher to put it back in. Any thoughts?
As far as speaking at churches, what would be really fun is to do a series of speaking tours in various cities and towns that would enable me to meet with CWers along the way. Talk about having fun and work at the same time! I could do the east coast one month, the west coast another month and divide up the middle for a couple of tours. Talk is easy though. Putting it into action is a whole other ballgame. But it's fun to dream.

We don't have Family Christian stores here and I'm considering the Christian bookstores. I think they'd be important to target. How is the question. I have so much to learn!
The secular bookstore I mentioned might take it. They have a good-sized Christian section (finally) but when they first opened that had no Christian section at all and a HUGE section for gays/lesbians. Part of it is me getting up the courage. Did I mention that I'm really scared about all this? I had to laugh at my psychiatrist. We were talking about self-promotion and I said that's something I just can't seem to do (outside the context of this book). It's like death! She said, "you're going to have to get over that if you want to sell your book!" Yep. She's actually very supportive of my book even though she's not a Christian.

She seems very supportive of the book content as well. She hasn't said she agrees or disagrees but recognizes the reason I wrote the book--to help others struggling with ssa or other issues--and has had only positive things to say. What she says to her colleagues or family after hours might be a very different thing. I think that what she tries to do is that if her patient has good and logical reasons for doing certain things, she accepts that and doesn't try to change it. She's really very good.

I must say... I do not know how you humidity dwellers get anything done outside. I have never been so thankful for air conditioning in all my life. When my air conditioning at home broke I was honestly kind of glad because that meant Matt could not turn it on anymore when it wasn't really even that hot. But here... crank up the AC!
We got to the park shortly after it opened. There were almost no lines at the point - hurray! We went on Aladdin's Magic Carpet ride first, and then to Pirates of the Caribbean. Then we rode Aladdin again, and it was quite nice to get some breeze.
We had breakfast at Crystal Palace, which is a buffet with the Winnie the Pooh characters. The characters are all supposed to come around to your table. Well, during our whole breakfast time the only one that stopped by our table was Eeyore... everyone else by-passed us. So when we were done with breakfast we went up and took pictures with the other characters wherever they were... Tigger was in the food area and Pooh and Piglet were at another place in the restaurant where hardly anyone was sitting. The lady who was touring with Pooh was not happy we did that. She asked us where we were sitting, and then said in a not-so-nice tone, "All the characters will get to your table... it takes an hour and fifteen minutes." Well, even if I would have known about the 75 minutes time limit, I still would not have wanted to spend another 30 minutes sitting at the table when both of us were done eating. Owell to her.
We almost accidentally left the restaurant without "paying." We pre-purchased a dining plan, and I/we did not know that they have to swipe the card to deduct the dining credits - I thought they came off automatically once we show up to our reservation. Our server caught us outside and said it happens pretty much every day... at least it wasn't just me.
After breakfast we saw this duck near some nice flowers and I decided to take a picture of it. When I pointed the camera at the duck, it started walking toward me and got really close. Matt said, "I think it wants to have its picture taken." I said, "Duck, you were born to be at Disney World." Ha.
Then we went over to Tomorrowland and spend most the rest of our morning there. We went on everything except the Astro Orbiter. We went to the Monsters Inc show, which interacts with the audience. At one point in the show the monsters were sharing a summary of the Monsters Inc movie, and the person running the cameras picked Matt to be Sully (the big monster). Ha! Matt said he would like to go see that show again, except he is afraid of being singled out again.
We went to Toon Town for a little while, but there was not really much to see, and the mini roller coaster was being worked on. Then we rode the train around and saw the Enchanted Tiki Room, which was really, really lame. After that we couldn't take the heat/humidity anymore (it was 2 PM I think), so we came back to the hotel room, which is where I am now. We plan to go back out in a while when the sun goes down a bit more. We have a special dinner scheduled for tonight. I am trying to decide if I want steak of fish.  High class steak is always good, but I have not had gourmet fish before.

Sounds like you are having fun and it's SUCH A good idea to split the day up, avoid the crazy heat hours and go back at night, the park is totally different at night, I love it.

I hate hate hate humidity too. It can take your breath away sometimes when it is really heavy. Buffy doesn't even want to go out.
I'm glad you are having a good time and Pooh to that woman who was rude to you.

Sunday continued:
We got back to the Magic Kingdom at, I think, 7:30. I walked through the Swiss Family Robinson tree house, which was not a good idea considering the lack of food I had had. I had to sit down and have some nuts and power aid before I felt OK again.
We went on Jungle Cruise. They tell lots of corny jokes on there.
We had dinner at the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort. So weird. They have seven elevators, and only one of them would take you to the 15th floor where the restaurant does. :O It was like a maze trying to figure out how to get there, because the check-in people on the 2nd floor did not tell us about the one elevator. Some of the elevators did not have a 15 button, and some had a 15 button but you could not push it. Crazy. It was like The Haunted Mansion or something.
We got great seats at dinner right next to the window, which over looks the Magic Kingdom and a couple other things. I did not know before dinner that the Magic Castle lights change color every few minutes. When we first got up there the castle was blue, then the next time I looked it was purple, and I thought, "Hey, didn't that used to be blue?" Then when I looked again and the castle was red I knew I was not crazy.
The fireworks at the Magic Kingdom started right after we got our food. It was a pretty good view.
For dinner Matt and I both ordered the fillet of beef with teriyaki BBQ sauce. It came with asparagus and these funky cheese cakes. The cakes were like potato and cheese, but then they had some type of spicy pepper, which made them inedible for us. I had one bite, and Matt had like two. They would have been good without the stupid peppers. The meal also came with some bread, which was good.
The dining plan also allows for dessert, so we both ordered something. I ordered a pistachio cake that came with strawberry sauce and some sorbet and some stuff that was like old hard glue icing. Matt had a cake with these crunchy things on top and pineapple chunks. Fancy dessert is weird I guess.
The bill would have been $106. Eek!
After dinner we stayed at the Magic Kingdom til 2 AM. We saw the Country Bear Jamboree, rode Haunted Mansion, rode most the stuff in Fantasy Land, rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Matt went on Splash Mountain.
We have a small list of stuff we did not get done that we plan to do when we go back a couple night from now.
All in all a good first day.
