before something serious happens such as 9/11, hurricane katrina, etc. do you believe that people and/or governments take such things as seriously as they should?

Yes I do, people are in denial, especially about terrorist nad thier evil plans to destroy all of us. It has been seven years Sept11, since the great tradgedy that happened. many other countries have been attacked in various ways by terrorist also. It matters who we elect, also in this election. People think that it does not, but I will assure you it is not over. One of terrorist tatics is let us think we are safe, and hit us again with a bigger attack. It will happen, and I think it will happen with our children for some reason. Katrina did catch the goverment off, and it was horrible. If you will notice things on all levels of the goverment are more prepared, and take it more seriously, as did the people who would not leave before, left this time.

I don't know anyone who's in denial about terrorist attacks. I do know that governments can play the problem down. But we have to ask ourselves what else they can do?
There was a warning before Lockerbie that a Pan Am plane would carry a bomb. What should Pan Am and the government done? Ground every Pan Am flight between Frankfurt and the US? Warn passengers so that they could choose whether to risk their lives? Where do we stop? Should towers as tall as the Twin Towers be built again ~ is it defiance to do so or is it a red flag to terrorists? Should the Underground be closed down because of a terrorist attack? Should people be stopped from flying? From driving cars or driving over bridges or through tunnels? What about trains, buses, coaches?
For natural disasters ~ how often should the government pay out to evacuate people because of the risk of flooding? How often will people be willing to be evacuated because of a risk? The cost must be phenominal. Should tourists be stopped going to places like New Orleans, San Fransisco, Indonesia and Sri Lanka?
It is right that we should be vigilent and look around and learn from experiences. Perhaps the US is in a situation where, through 9/11 and Katrina, it was reminded that it could be attacked in some way. Many other countries have always been aware of the potential threat of attack on them.

We are to be as wise as serpants and as innnocent as doves. Before the attacks of 9/11 the various intel groups were prohibited by law from sharing information.
There needs to be a protection of civil liberties balanced by the understanding that there are those who want the total defeat of the USA.
