When I file in early 2009, it will be the first time I file as a homeowner for the entire previous calendar year. Are there any online tools/calculators I can use to guesstimate what my itemized deductions & potential federal refund would be? Thanks!

Do you use Quicken or Money? They have calculators built in to the program. If you don't try bankrate.com or dinkytown.net

I use them to file my taxes electronily and it seems helpful. There are a host of other online products that work pretty well also.

I use a simple spreadsheet to get close enough, good enough. If you're interested, e-mail me and I'll send you a copy (with fake data). Since I'm not often on here, PM is not a good way to contact me.

why not just do this on an actual 1040? you eventually are going to have to complete the real thing, the form 1040. it is not very difficult to actually rough-out the 1040, and figure out where the new info goes. i have already done this for 2008. I did this to be able to accurately adjust the amount of federal taxes being held out of my pay. once 2008 is over, I will simply follow the 1040 I have already drafted, and enter the exact numbers, instead of estimates. So, actually using the 1040 to do what you want to do has gotten me very prepared for tax season (OK I know this is the U.S. and every season is tax season).
