God Above - Warrior Mom Wisdom - Week of August 2

Warrior Mom Wisdom Devotional

GOD ABOVE…

Recently, God provided a “grace house” for our family. I call it a grace house because for several years we have been praying for one. Many friends have joined us on the journey. I thank you all for your prayers and support. The house is an older home, built in 1975. I love that it’s older. As a result, there were some major things my husband had to do with the plumbing, the heating and air system, and insulation. My husband and my 14-year-old son spent a lot of time underneath the house in the dirty crawl space putting all new insulation under the floors. On one particular day, I was in the bedroom sitting by a vent unpacking a box. I heard their conversation through the vent. It went something like this:

Jacob yelled, “Dad, can I go start a load of laundry real quick?” Some of you may not know, but my son does his own laundry, and he has to have it done by Saturday night. It was getting late on a Saturday; he must have just remembered that he needed to get started on that laundry of his.

My husband yelled, “What?”

Jacob repeated himself again to which my husband yelled, “What?”

“Never mind,” I heard Jacob say.

I guess, Jacob realized that his dad was not going to hear him. My husband was far away from Jacob, having crawled into one the tiny spaces underneath the house, in the far, far corner of the house on order to insert a piece of insulation.

Jacob had really impressed me on this day. He had been working with Brian for hours, and he had such a great attitude. When I told him that I was particularly impressed with him for helping, not complaining, and maintaining a great attitude, Jacob said, “What’s there to complain about?” I wanted to give him the world when he responded in that way.

It was perfect timing that I heard this conversation; Now, I knew what I could do for him. I decided to go down there and tell Jacob that I would go ahead and start his laundry.

I found him sitting on the dirt floor. He was covered in dirt with a white mask over his nose and mouth. By this time, Brian was calling measurements to Jacob and Jacob was writing them down on the tablet. Next, they would emerge from under the house to cut insulation to fit the new measurements.

“Hi, Jacob,” I said.

“Oh, you scared me mom,” He replied.

“Hey, Bud, I’ll go ahead and put a load of laundry in for you,” I told him.

“How did you know, Mom?” He asked.

“I heard your conversation from above.” I answered.

“You’re the best, Mom! Thanks so much!” Jacob called as I walked away.

As I walked back up to the house, God reminded me that earthly fathers are limited by obstacles in this world. Sometimes our dads don’t hear us because they are too far away under the house like Jacob’s dad on this particular day. Sometimes they don’t hear us because they haven’t learned to listen with their hearts. Unlike earthly fathers, however, God always hears us, and He always sees us “work hard in the dirt with a good attitude” as well. God reminded me that He hears our prayers. He even knows what we need before we even ask Him. And, when we keep a good attitude and do our work for our Heavenly Father simply because He asked us to do so… Well, God is even more proud of us than I was proud of Jacob that day! I encourage you and remind you today: God sees you, and He hears you. He is God Above!
