"Samuel grew; the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground."
I Samuel 3: 19, Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION:

Words You Can Believe!

"God's lips know not how to lie, He will accomplish all His promises."
A. Eschylus

Do I take God at His word and believe nothing He says will "fall to the ground?"

What is there in my life that I need to believe God for right now?

"The main hinge on which faith turns is this; we must not imagine that the Lord's promises are true objectively but not in our experience.  We must make them ours by embracing them in our hearts."
John Calvin

INSPIRATION:

"Know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God promised concerning you.  All have come to pass for you; not one thing of them has failed."
Joshua 23: 14, Amplified Bible

The book of Joshua, chapter 23 begins with this information, "And Joshua had grown old and advanced in years."

I don't know about you, but to me personally, there's something very special about a person who is "advanced" in years, proclaiming a radiant testimony on behalf of their heavenly Father.  This is exactly what Joshua did.  In Joshua 23: 14, this man of God, who was one of only two spies who came back from the Promised Land with a positive report, stood before God's children and gave his report: "I want you to know something," he said.  "And not just in your heart but down deep in your soul."  I can only imagine Joshua's voice ringing out as he proclaimed, "Not one thing has failed which your God promised.  Did you hear me?  Not one thing! Everything has happened that God promised.  Not even one little thing failed."

It is as though Joshua goes back to one line repeatedly.  If God's children didn't hear him the first time or understand the first time - Joshua wanted to make certain they GOT IT!  God's promises don't fail!!

If you are wondering why we are back in Joshua when we are studying I Samuel, I want to share with you something important which I take more seriously now than when I used to study God's word years ago. In our text for today, I Samuel 3: 19, the Bible tells us that as Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him.  I want to ask you, "As you look back over your life, has God been with you?" And then we are further told that not only was God with Samuel, but also, God let none of Samuel's words fall on the ground, wasted, useless!  So there's no question as to what this means, I Samuel 3: 20, 21 says, "All Israel, from Dan to Beersheba knew Samuel was established to be a prophet to the Lord.  And the Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, for the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the word of the Lord."

Let's not miss this fantastic piece of information.  While God's presence left Israel because of their disobedient behavior, God's presence didn't leave Samuel and everybody knew it for God was with him.  God kept His promise to Samuel and Samuel kept his promise to God to be his faithful servant - all his life!

Just because everyone else couldn't be trusted, God still could and so could His children who kept plugged into His power.

Samuel believed God.  He believed what God said.  And because of the fundamental core in his life, just like his mother Hannah, Samuel reflected the spirit and power of heaven.

But there's one other thing about Samuel's life I find so instructional in my own life.  By trusting God's promises and by believing in his Father, Samuel realized that as Elizabeth Elliot so beautifully notes, "God has never promised to solve our problems.  He has not promised to answer our questions…He has promised to go with us."  I want to add that it means God will keep His promise when I'm on the mountain and when I'm deep in the valley.

This weekend, I found out that a dear friend, who is one of the most devoted Christian men I know, was diagnosed with inoperable cancer.  His daughter shared with his friends her dad's words, "God is faithful, no matter what happens."  A modern day Joshua and Samuel, standing up for a Father whom we must absolutely never lose trust in, for in the words of Adoniram Judson, "(Our) future is as bright as the promises of God."

"His every word of grace is strong as that which built the skies; the voice that rolls the stars along speaks all the promises.
Isaac Watts

AFFIRMATION:

"From the depths of my despair I call to You, O Lord, hear my voice.
I look for the Lord, my soul waits for Him, in His word is all my trust.
My soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning…
Trust in the Lord!  For with Him is steadfast love, and great is His power to save and redeem."
Psalm 130: 1, 2, 5-7

"Lord, through weariness and hurt, through heartaches and depression, I am still Yours.  I do not understand, but I believe that You are here in the dark places of human life, and that nothing can take us out of Your hands."
