EXPLORATION

"PURE"- 1) Free from contamination; 2) Containing nothing unnecessary; 3) Without faults; 4) Full-strength. Free from impurities.

What is the "focus" of my life?

"Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin?'"
Proverbs 20: 9, New International Version

INSPIRATION

"The circumstances amid which you live determine your reputation; the truth you believe determines your character."
William Hersey Davis

When we confirm that the "focus" of our lives is to be like God in order for His purity to take root and grow in our lives, change occurs.

And today, we will go a step further by studying the "what" of a focused life. We'll do this by turning a page on another chapter in the life of David

When David was a young man, God sent the prophet Samuel to his family's home in the hills of Bethlehem where David was anointed to be the next King of Israel. We must remember that Saul was still the king. And he continued to serve for a number of years. Yet "waiting in the wings" was David - a popular figure among the people of Israel and even more popular in the household of Saul. After David won the victory over Goliath, the women came out of the cities "singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.  And the women answered one another as they played, and said, ‘Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands;" (I Samuel 18: 6, 7, K.J.V.).

These bravos for David caused the green-eyed monster we call envy to rear its ugly head. The Bible states: "Saul was very wroth and displeased…and Saul kept a jealous eye on David from that day forward" (I Samuel 18: 8, 9, K.J.V.). This in spite of the fact that his daughter Michal loved and married David. And his son, Jonathon, became David's best friend.

Just imagine for a moment if you were in David's place. He had been anointed king, he knew the rulership of the country was to be his, yet he found himself running for his life from King Saul who knew his days of ruling Israel were numbered. If David had wished to, he could have made a power grab - and seized the throne. The people would have supported him, that's for certain. However, David's life was ordered by God…not people's opinion. The focus of his behavior was the will of God, not the will of others.

No clearer was God's guiding force in his life visible than in an experience recorded in I Samuel 24. David was again fleeing from the wrath of Saul, hiding out in the rocks of Engedi. There was a cave where David's men took cover, and who should come into the cave to take a nap - Saul. David's soldiers said to him, "Finally God has delivered thine enemy unto you" (I Samuel 24: 4). But David, turning to his men, said "The Lord forbid that I should do harm to my king." What an example of following God's will not your own, even in the face of the encouragement of others to take a situation into your own hands.

This experience of David points out that the "focus" of our lives is not on what we want to do and it's not even on what others want us to do. Instead, our focus, if we desire God's purity in our lives, must be on what God wants us to do. In the reflection called "Reputation of Character" by William Hersey Davis, he ends his poem with these words: "Reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone; character is what angels say about you before the throne of God."

May, like David, the purity of God find fertile soil in our hearts when we know "Who" is the focus of our lives…and "what" He wants us to do for Him.

AFFIRMATION

"Let our live be purified, and all the rest will follow."
Henry David Thoreau

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."
Matthew 5: 8, K.J.V.
