"Perfect" - Without defect or omission. Sound. Accurate. Absolute. To bring to completion. To finish.
Have I met the "perfect" Saviour?
Saviour in Hebrew: "Yasha" - Open-wide and free. Defend. Liberty. Deliverance. Old Testament)
Saviour in Greek: "Soter" - A deliverer. (New Testament)
Over the last several days we have learned what it means to be "perfect" - doing the will of God. We found that the "perfect" life God wants for us is a peace-filled life. We learned that "perfect" listening requires three specific qualities: a receptive heart; an attentive ear; and an instructive heart. We studied about the three characteristics of a "perfect" love. And we looked at the qualities of a "perfect" friend.
Each day, as I studied, I found there is one person who has every characteristic and every quality needed to be called "perfect" -- and this is Jesus. Our "perfect" life guide. Our "perfect" listener. Our "perfect" friend. And our "perfect" Saviour.
But in order to better understand Jesus' ability to be our "Saviour," I needed to find out, for myself, what a "Saviour" does. In order to get a clearer picture, I went to the Old Testament Hebrew dictionary to find out what the word Savior means. The word used in Isaiah, Psalm, II Kings, II Samuel, Jeremiah, and Hosea means: To free. To open-wide. To set at liberty. To deliver.
In the New Testament, the word used for Saviour in Greek is "Soter." Referring to Jesus, this means deliverer. In other words, Someone was needed to release or set at liberty those who were not free. A Deliverer was needed to release you and me from the shackles and chains that have kept us bound. A "perfect" Saviour was needed.
Luke 2: 11 tells of a Heavenly angel sharing the Good News with shepherds, "Today, in the city of David, a Saviour is born." Then Luke identifies the Deliverer as Jesus Christ. Matthew also tells us the work of this Saviour - "For He shall save His people" (Matthew 1: 21).
This "perfect" Saviour was sent to unlock the chains that bind us, to release us from the prison of certain death.
Nothing I have ever heard better illustrates our Saviour's gift to us than a story my dad told me many years ag
"One day a minister was walking on the Boston Common. He met a boy who had a hand-made cage full of different birds that lived in the vicinity.
He said, ‘Young man where did you get those birds?'
‘I trapped them' replied the boy.
'What are you going to do with them?' asked the pastor.
‘I'm going to play with them.'
‘Well, after you get tired of playing with them, what are you going to do,' inquired the minister.
‘I'm going to give them to the cat to eat,' replied the boy.
‘Oh,' said the minister, ‘I'd like to buy those birds.'
‘Mr., you don't want these birds. They're not canaries. They won't sing. They're no good.'
By this time the little birds were sitting in the cage all drooped over not moving a feather, just waiting for their doom.
‘But,' the minister continued, ‘I want to buy them. How much will you take?'
‘Oh,' said the boy again, ‘they're no good to you. You don't want them.'
‘How much will you take?'
The minister finally got the boy to say, ‘I'll take $2 for the cage, birds and all!'
The minister gave the boy $2 and walked away.
The boy watched as the preacher turned into an alley. He opened the door of the cage. Not one of the birds moved.
They didn't realize they were free.
The minister gently patted the side of the cage and one after another the birds began to hop out the door and fly away.
Later the minister said, ‘It made me happy every time one of those birds took to the air. It seemed as if their wings said, ‘released, released, released.'"
The "perfect" Saviour offers you and me deliverance from whatever chains are binding us today. He has released us - we've been set free!
"When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, He will send them a Saviour and defender, and He will release them."
Isaiah 19: 20
New International Version
"For He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my Deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge."
Psalm 144: 2, N.I.V.
