“Let Me Take Your Burden”

Have I asked Jesus to relieve me of my burdens?

“God lays upon us no other burden than that of putting our whole trust in Him.”

John Baillie

INSPIRATION

One summer when I was eleven years old, I went to Vacation Bible School where the leader of our class taught us a song I remember to this day. I’d sing it for you if I could – but I have no talent in the “singing” department. Instead, I’ll share the words of this song:

“Roll, roll your burdens away.
Roll, roll your burdens away.
For Jesus has promised to take them all,
So roll, roll your burdens away.”

It’s easy to think this children’s song, so joyously performed by young voices who may not carry the heavy burdens of adulthood, has no meaning to us as we face the rainy torrents of maturity. But, as time has passed, I’ve found that I love to hum this tune as a reminder that there is Someone by my side, helping me carry my daily burdens and what’s more, this Someone has at times actually carried me, when He knows my strength is gone and the load is just too heavy for me to bear.

Several months ago, I began reading a special little book called, Meditations of the Heart by Howard Thurman. This book contains short essays and thoughts on a wide-variety of topics. One special essay caught my eyes. It’s called “Life Without Cares.” I’m going to share these thoughts with you because they are so appropriate today:

Life Without Cares

            “Cast all your care upon God; for He careth for you.

A life without cares! Such is frequently the burden of the heart’s desiring. There is no one who has not felt the emptiness of exhaustion, the dead weight of burdens greater than can be carried, the utter panic shooting through one’s total being as the heavy load settles into place. All this is a familiar part of living experience. The urge to escape, the hunger to be let alone for a span, however brief – is also a familiar part of living experience.

Who has not looked upon (her) own life with varying degrees of resentment, sensed sometimes clearly, and rebelliously uttered at other times? It may be some physical handicap that slows one up in the general race; it may be some scar of the mind that mars the wholeness and beauty of the spirit; it may be the backwash, the residue, of some ghastly error made in a moment when all of life was caught in the frightful grip of a decision of the moment; and now there is no choice but to abide by it, days without end.

Who has not stood beside the tragedy of a loved one and been paralyzed by helplessness wishing to redeem and restore? Something surely can be done, but what? There must be help available, but where? There has to be an answer, but how to find it?

The Word from the Bible is: “Cast all you care upon God, for He careth for you.” This is no idle word – no mere utterance of piety nestled in a great fear. This is the Word of courage and of faith. It is the assertion of the Spirit in us calling us to act in the light of our true heritage. Try it today with reference to something definite and concrete. What a difference! This day will become a new day among all the days of your life.”

So I ask you, is there a specific burden you are carrying that is bending your back over until you feel like breaking? Today, this very minute, I encourage you to roll, roll that burden onto Jesus. Remember, He won’t be unhappy you gave Him your burden because He’s the One who said, “Cast all your cares on me.”

I want to end our devotion with a thought I included in my book, When A Woman Meets Jesus. I don’t know who wrote this but I keep this message taped to the Xerox machine in my office. It is a daily reminder that Jesus is a lot bigger than little, tired Dorothy, and He has my life and my world under control if I will just let Him. It’s a message from Jesus directly to you and me:

Today I will be handling all your problems. Please remember, I do not need your help. If a situation you cannot handle happens to appear, DO NOT attempt to resolve it. Kindly put it in the SFJTD (Something For Jesus To Do) box. It will be addressed in MY time, not yours. Once the matter is placed into the box, DO NOT hold on to it or attempt to remove it. Holding on or removal will delay the resolution of your problem. If it is a situation that you think you are capable of handling, please consult me in prayer to be sure that it is the proper resolution. Because I do not sleep nor do I slumber, there is no need for you to lose any sleep. Rest my child. If you need to contact me, I am only a prayer away.”

AFFIRMATION

 Abiding Rest

“O, my precious Saviour
to whom I ever cling;
Please take each care and burden
My soul to You does bring.

For there is not one moment
I can live without Your grace;
How I need Your strength and love
Your tender, consoling embrace.

To guide me in each hour
As I know Your plans are best
So I may walk with joyful hope
In Your sweet, abiding rest.”
