"Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle and were assembled at Socoh, which belongs to Judah…and a champion went out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath…Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ‘Why have you come out to draw up for battle?  Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul?'…when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid…and David said to the men standing by him, ‘what shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel?  For who is this Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?'…David said to Saul, ‘Let no man's heart fail because of this Philistine: your servant will go out and fight with him…The Lord Who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.'  And Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the Lord be with you!'"
I Samuel 17: 1-37, Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION

"Every Step of the Way"

"I would submit to all Thy will,
For Thou art good and wise;
Let every anxious thought be still,
Nor one faint murmur rise.
Thy love can cheer the darksome gloom,
And bid me wait serene,
Till hope and joys immortal bloom
And brighten all the scene."
Lincoln's Devotional

Have I ever felt that the small tasks I am doing are not of value and that my life seems useless?

As I review my life, can I see times where, in the midst of discouragement and hardship, God was actually preparing me for something very special He wanted me to do for Him in the future?

"O Master, let me walk with Thee
in lowly paths of service free;
Tell me Thy secret;
help me bear the strain of toil,
the fret of care.
Teach me Thy patience;
still with Thee in closer,
dearer company,
In work that keeps faith sweet and strong,
In trust that triumphs over wrong;
In hope that sends a shining ray
far down the future's broadening way;
In peace that only Thou canst give,
With Thee, O Master, let me live."

INSPIRATION

"What is to give light must endure burning."
Viktor Frankl

The story of David and Goliath is probably one of the most well-known in the Bible.  Certainly, as a child, I repeatedly heard this tale told as a most dramatic adventure.

However, one of the best things that has come into my life from our studies here in Transformation Garden is the fact that we read through the Bible.  We don't just pick a text here or there.  Instead, we've chosen to study the Bible in context, with one event happening after another.  This has helped me come to an amazing recognition of the way God works in the lives of His daughters and sons moment by moment.  One step after another.

Our Father's way may be direct and dramatic, but quite often, His way is one of simple steps, one foot in front of the other, one building block laid upon another.  There's nowhere in the Bible we see this process happening more clearly than in I Samuel 17.

While the story of big, ferocious Goliath and the young boy David, with only a slingshot and a few stones, gets most of the attention, it's what happened before this event that I want to focus on today.  Long before David confronted Goliath, the Bible tells us that when he was just a young shepherd watching his dad's sheep, a bear attacked and later a lion, challenges that were the first building blocks being laid by God.  Later, David, whose beautiful lyre playing was needed  to sooth the restless nerves of King Saul, took a rather unimpressive job playing music.  This wasn't some high and mighty cabinet job.  His work was as a background musician - no big deal.  Then when his brothers went off to battle, Jesse asked his youngest son, David, to become a delivery boy, taking food to his older siblings.  Another little task. Another apparently insignificant job.

But when the day came that the right person was needed at the right moment - David was prepared and ready.  What's more, during the time of waiting and working at what some might call meaningless jobs, David was learning on whom he could trust and rely.  He was being prepared for the work God had set before him.

Today, you may feel that your talents and abilities are being wasted in some useless position.  You may be out of work and find yourself frustrated by circumstances beyond your control.  And yet, what you and I can't see is that there is a heavenly Hand that is guiding, holding, strengthening, and protecting.  What's more, God's ultimate plans for us will not only surprise us but will allow our lives to be used to bring glory to our Father.  So keep on waiting patiently.  Every moment of every day, God is at work in your life and mine, fulfilling His perfect purposes in our lives.

"If God weren't growing sons and daughters, things would not take nearly as long.  But since He is more interested in our growth than He is in our getting, waiting becomes a very essential and useful means toward that end.  He doesn't traffic in add-water-and-mix saints, or in freezer-to microwave-to-table kids.  He builds with neither plastic nor papier-mâché…Be confident that (God) takes no delight in compelling you to wait.  He is patiently overseeing your life…Rest…He wants you to trust Him.  When nothing seems to be happening, something really is!"

AFFIRMATION

"Teach Me Lord, To Wait"

"Lord, to wait down on my knees
Till in Your own good time You answer my pleas;
Teach me not to rely on what others do,
But to wait in prayer for an answer from You.
They that wait upon the Lord
Shall renew their strength,
They shall mount up with wings as eagles;
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint,
Teach me, Lord, teach me, Lord to wait."
