"His right hand doth embrace me."
Song of Solomon 2: 6, K.J.V.
"Embrace: - To encircle. To include. To encompass.
"Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory."
Psalm 73: 23 -24, N.I.V.
What do I think of when I hear the word "embrace?"
"In His love God clothes us, enfolds and embraces us; that tender love completely surrounds us, never to leave us."
Julian of Norwich
Awarded as the "Song of the Year" in 1991 and popularized by Bette Midler, the melodious ballad, "From a Distance" became subject to interpretation by listeners who were analyzing God's role on planet earth. Many individuals noted, after hearing this song, that God was portrayed as an out-of-touch figure in the sky - looking down on us from His lofty perch. High above our daily problems, He could keep, at arm's length, the difficulties we face as He serves only as an observer to all the chaos.
If this view of God were the reality I had to face everyday - how desperate life would be. Sadly, there are many individuals who do believe that "the Spirit in the Sky" is only there looking down in some detached way - never really entering the real world of my real life.
In order to get a much more intimate view of our Heavenly Father we need to focus on the word, "embrace" for the next few days. In Hebrew, this word is used to mean "clasp." The first thing I thought of was a clasp on a watch or bracelet or necklace. It is the element that is designed to hold something together. And in the New Testament, in Greek this is exactly how the word "embrace" is used. It means to "bring a union." However, the Greek definition is even more expansive when defining an embrace as "enfolding in your arms." A beautiful way to bring two individuals into union - a circle of love.
My prayer is that no matter how far away you feel God is and no matter if others say He doesn't care, you will realize God is with you. He sees you. He hears you. And most of all, He loves you.
"God hugs you.
You are encircled
by the arms
of the mystery of God."
Hildegard of Bingen
"The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."
Deuteronomy 33: 27, N.I.V.
"We cannot fall beneath the arms of God. However low we fall, they are still underneath us."
