Someday I'll be a writer. What an odd phrase — ironic, as I am physically writing out these words. Everyone dreams of "someday." Everyone has high hopes for that one day so seemingly far off in the ever-so-distant future.
I think of a parent teaching their child to swim in the daunting waters of a 6-foot chlorinated pool. They beckon you to come, promising not to let you drown...vowing not to loose sight of you. Yet the closer you swim you begin to realize how far away they are. Are they backing away? Or are your fears just magnifying the distance?
Never the less, you cannot stop now, you're half way there, stuck in the middle of the deep-end with no ledge to grasp hold to. You have to swim. You have to push on. And it's when you finally feel those arms envelope your tired body that you realize, you just became a swimmer.
For the last 3 years I have been swimming frantically, tirelessly, and sometimes aimlessly towards my dream of becoming a writer. Today could very easily signify the beginning of my writing "someday." But I know better. I know that my journey as a writer started the first time I sat down to write that sentence, that paragraph, that article, that story, that blog post or that song.
Both you and I have in us a God given gift. It's called passion. It is the desire to dream.
Dreams of "someday" becoming ... [fill in the blank]
Dreams of "someday" doing...
Dreams of "someday" marrying...
Dreams of "someday" having...
Dreams of "someday" changing, altering, shaping, crafting your part of the world.
Well my friends, our journey has already begun. Some of us may have just left the ledge. Some are stuck in the middle and are trying to plug through. And others of us are just out of reach of the other side. But wherever we are, we can rest in knowing that God is creating something in us.
And it's gonna be good.
*What dream are you tacking "someday" onto?
*Is it possible that you are already living into that dream?
Philippians 3:13-21, Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus...
Psalm 55:22, Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
Delight yourself in the Lord [so that He will] give you the desires of your heart. Commit your ways to the Lord. Trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. [My sweet sister] be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him... — Psalm 37:3-4
