The Scent of Freedom

Sharon Jaynes

Today’s Truth

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Galatians 5:1 NIV

Friend to Friend

Brinkley could smell it in the air. It was the smell of freedom.

Each summer, Deb and her family, including the family dog, Brinkley, head up to Bancroft Ontario for vacation. I think Brinkley loves it the most. When they get close to the camp, Brinkley sticks his nose on the car’s air conditioning vent and starts barking and jumping around in the car. He can actually tell when they are close to their cottage, because to him, the air smells different.

You see, at home, Brinkley is confined to his fenced-in-yard, but at camp, he is free to run around wherever he chooses. Brinkley gets excited because he’s getting a whiff of freedom.

Jesus tells us in the Bible that we can know the truth and the truth will set us free. And with that freedom comes many extraordinary moments with God as we begin to see Him at work in our lives. I think Brinkley has the right idea. The smell of freedom is something to get excited about.

You won’t see me running around in circles or barking for joy, but when you pass me on the street, you might notice a particular skip in my step and undeniable smile on my face. That’s the look of freedom.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, I’ll admit that sometimes I take my freedom in Christ for granted. Help me to be like Brinkley and rejoice over the freedom that You have given me. I am no longer fenced in by my sin, but free! Woo Hoo! Praise the Lord.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

Now It’s Your Turn

·         Just curious. When you read about Brinkley, did a smile creep on your face? I wonder if God feels that way when He sees us rejoicing in all that He has done in our lives.

·         What does freedom look like to you?

·         What does Paul say about our freedom in Galatians 5:1, 2 Corinthians 3:17, Romans 6:18.

·         Thank God for your freedom today!
