Don’t we all want to understand our purpose in life?

I remember the moment I finished reading Purpose Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren. Only a few months had passed since I had returned to the Father’s arms after spending several years wasting my life away on worldly things and selfish desires. I was so desperate to discover God’s plan for my life. I had spent so many years planning and striving towards MY dreams, MY goals, and MYaspirations that I never took the time to ask God what He had planned for me.

And because I was a fresh student of the Word, I had never seen Psalm 139:13-16 before:

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. (NKJV)

My days have been ordained by God before I was even born?

Even as a new Christian, I was told that God would give me the desires of my heart, and I truly believed the Lord would help me achieve my dreams because of that promise. But I didn’t know that there was another half of that promise that involved seeking the Lord first.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4 ESV)

Because He wrote my days down, He would know more about my life than I would, right?

I also didn’t understand that the longer you walk with God, He actually works out His will for your life through the desires He puts in your heart. He molds your heart to receive His will, which always involves people coming to the knowledge of Him through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you truly delight yourself in the Lord, your desires will be so God-focused that you will only want to live for Him and not yourself.

The more time you spend with the Lord, the less you are concerned with your selfish desires. You truly long for God’s will over your own.

This change of heart happens once we fully surrender ourselves to God.

When we surrender ourselves completely to the Lord, it is the moment God will begin to use you for His purpose for you- to reach others for Him.

Our lives are not about WHAT we do, but WHO we meet while we are doing what God is calling us to do.CLICK TO TWEET

Our strengths- talents, personality, gifts, etc- are the ways God uses us to achieve His purpose through our lives. Taking an inventory of our strengths will help us discover our specific assignment from the Lord.

Assignments may change throughout our life, but our purpose on the earth remains the same for the rest of our lives.

So what is our purpose?

To advance the Kingdom of God by telling others about Jesus Christ so that others may come into a relationship with their heavenly Father and Creator and experience Love Himself.

You are not your own; you have been bought with a price. (1 Corinthians 6:19b-20a NKJV)

Once you grasp that deep your heart, your perspective on life completely changes. You see that your life is meant to live for Jesus because He gave Himself up for you. We are to reach other people by telling them about Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice so that they can be saved from the pit of hell, eternally separated from Love.
